Mission Water shortage and flood hazards are generally considered the world’s biggest challenges in the water sector. Climate change, accelerated sea level rise, land subsidence and increasing population pressure on low-lying areas are bound to enhance the risks and global economic developments are likely to influence the ability to cope with them. All of this must be taken into account in spatial planning and city development. The Dutch water sector has essential knowledge and expertise on how to deal with flood risks and is able to realize innovative sustainable solutions. The University College Dordrecht, which is active in the field of waterrelated issues in low-lying coastal areas, aims to establish an international network of experts and educational institutes to exchange this knowledge and expertise. Aim In collaboration with the Delft Flood Risk Centre, University College Dordrecht offers a threeweek short course of flood risk management. The aim is to acquaint you with current practices and forthcoming developments in Dutch flood risk management, including the underlying ideas, techniques and considerations, a to teach you how to translate this to your own situation and apply it there. Results Apart from providing you with key knowledge on flood risk management, the course will provide you with permanent access to guidelines and technical background information on flood protection. Exercises on the situation in your own country or region will enable you to translate and apply Dutch flood risk management practices to your own situation. The course will also provide you with an international network of colleagues dealing with similar problems. 1

Lectures Nine different keynote speakers, internationally recognized experts in their field, will address different aspects of the Dutch multi-layer approach to flood risk management. This state-ofthe-art approach is based on prevention, risk-reducing spatial planning and disaster control. It aims at minimizing flood risk in terms of potential material damage, personal risk (the probability of an individual to lose his/her life) and group risk (the probability of large numbers of casualties at one time), but also at minimizing social disruption and maximizing recovery speed in case of an emergency. Workshops In a series of nine workshop sessions you will investigate how the information presented in the lecturers and available through the written material can be used for flood risk management in your own environment. You are supposed to be sufficiently familiar with the situation in your own country or region to make this process effective. During the workshops you will be challenged to connect with the latest insights and innovative solutions, including ‘building with nature’. Excursions During three excursions to different parts of the country you will visit projects presented during the course and get explanations from those actually involved in their realization. Apart from seeing them in reality, this provides the opportunity to become familiar with the practical implications of these projects. One of the excursions will be a boat trip to Rotterdam harbour, as a starting point of a visit to the Delta works, the recent extension of Rotterdam harbour and the Delfland Sand Engine, an example of building with nature. Venue The course venue will be Dordrecht, the oldest Dutch city, built on an island in an area where the Rhine-Meuse river system meets the sea. Part of the city lies outside the main flood defence line, which intersects the urban area. This explains why the city’s flood safety is one of the biggest flood management challenges in the country and why Dordrecht is a genuine flood safety hotspot calling for innovative solutions. Apart from this, the city is full of history, culture and sightseeing opportunities. Join For application please contact .
