What this document is
The Advanced Higher Investigative Biology Unit Specification is one of the component unit documents the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) publishes as part of the Advanced Higher Biology course within Scotland's National Qualifications framework. Where a course specification describes an entire subject at a given level, a unit specification defines a single unit's outcomes and the standard a student's evidence must meet to be assessed as having passed it.
The investigative unit within Advanced Higher Biology centers on independent practical or research work, requiring students to design and carry out their own biological investigation rather than follow a set practical script, which is why SQA documents it separately from the course's other content-based units.
Unit specifications are revised alongside their parent course specification, so an older copy may describe outcomes or assessment standards SQA has since updated. The current version is published through SQA's Biology subject overview page, alongside the course specification and its other component units.
