YOUR JOURNEY WITH US WILL BE AN EXPERIENCE YOU’LL NEVER FORGET Special moments, colourful characters and chance encounters will forever form part of your personal story. The pace of an APT safari allows you time to be enchanted by the ever-changing landscapes and immersed in the complex fabric of Africa’s natural wonders and blend of cultures. Waking to the sounds of the animal kingdom in the African bush will stay forever imprinted in your memory. Perhaps a traditional outdoor boma dinner will be a highlight you’ll recount upon your return. Or maybe standing amid the ‘Cradle of Mankind’ will take your breath away. One thing is certain, the memories you forge with APT will stay with you forever.

10 | THE APT DIFFERENCE

THE APT DIFFERENCE | 11

THE APT DIFFERENCE AUSTRALIAN & FAMILY-OWNED – ORIGINATING IN 1927 Australia’s leading travel company, APT is still owned and run by the McGeary family. With origins that date back to 1927, a special year of celebration awaits in 2017, and we’d love for you to join us.

EXPERTISE & EXPERIENCE APT’s extensive experience with African safaris has allowed us to craft sensational holidays. As we expand throughout the continent, our journeys here only get more exciting.

INCLUSIVE & GUARANTEED Our prices cover everything as detailed, including transfers, game park fees, internal flights, gratuities, meals and sightseeing. Plus, all prices are guaranteed once your deposit has been paid, so you can relax knowing your price won’t be affected by currency fluctuations.

AWARD-WINNING TOUR OPERATOR Among our many awards and accolades, in 2014 and 2015, APT was voted Australia’s Best International Tour Operator and Best Domestic Tour Operator, and 2015’s Best River Cruise Operator by the Australian Federation of Travel Agents (AFTA). It’s further proof that when you choose to travel with APT, you’re choosing to travel with the very best.

WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED If you pay an upfront fee of $75 per person, you can cancel your holiday prior to the due date for final payment and retain a credit for the deposit paid, less any third party cancellation fees. Held by APT, this can be used for a new APT booking made within three years of the original cancellation. Conditions apply, see pages 88-89.

NORTHCOTE TO NAIROBI – IT’S BEEN QUITE A JOURNEY Since humble beginnings in a small Melbourne suburb, APT has pioneered the way we travel. It’s a fascinating story. When the trams stopped, opportunity knocked

On board with the times

“Dad’s gamble really paid off – he was able to buy his first real bus in 1927,” recounts his son Geoff McGeary.

Following almost two decades of consistent growth, APT looked even further afield and started its Canada and Alaska program in 1991. In doing so, the company moved beyond traditional coach touring to include journeys by luxury train and cruise ship.

In the 1920s, the cable tram drivers in Melbourne’s northern suburbs went on an extended strike. While some saw inconvenience, a 24-year-old mechanic named Bill McGeary saw opportunity. Bill converted his truck into a makeshift bus and began ferrying commuters from the tram-starved suburb of Northcote to the tram and train terminus in Clifton Hill.

“He soon sold his Northcote route to buy a bigger and busier route in the southern suburbs. Over the next 20 years he bought more buses to cover more and more routes.”

School rounds and greyhounds

As the business grew, Bill looked beyond commuter bus routes towards charter services. “He was always searching for new opportunities,” says Geoff. “He secured contracts for a number of school runs as well as trips to greyhound and harness racing events.” But in the mid-1950s, Bill’s health began to fail and the once-thriving business deteriorated. Determined to save it, a 19-year-old Geoff obtained a special under-age bus driver’s licence and took up the challenge of running McGeary’s Parlor Coaches.

As the 1960s rolled into the 1970s the company, having become Australian Pacific Coaches, was soon conducting day tours and themed weekends, including trips that took Victorians to Sydney to see the then-risqué musical, Hair. In the mid-70s the company made its first foray overseas, operating escorted journeys through New Zealand as Australian Pacific Tours (APT).

Over the years, APT also built on its outback experience in the Northern Territory and introduced luxury wilderness adventures in Western Australia’s remote Kimberley region. For Geoff’s daughter Louise Tandy (née McGeary), also an APT director, the Kimberley set the scene for one of her fondest travel memories. “We were at APT’s lodge at Bell Gorge when local Indigenous children put on a corroboree for my son’s third birthday. It was a really magical experience.”

Embarking on new adventures

In 2005, Geoff saw an opportunity to introduce Australians and New Zealanders to a new style of travel and launched the company’s innovative European river cruising holidays.

Next stop: the Red Centre

Since then, APT has continued to expand its range, which today covers more than 70 countries around the globe.

“The dinner table conversation was never about football,” recalls Geoff’s son Robert McGeary, an APT director.

On a personal note, Geoff’s services to Australian tourism were acknowledged in 2014 when he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia. More recently he was recognised as an Australian Tourism Legend at the 2015 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards. Geoff is characteristically modest about his achievements.

“It was about unique places where interesting things happened.”

“It’s not about what I’ve done, it’s about our people,” Geoff reflects.

Recognising Australia’s increasing enthusiasm for domestic tourism, Geoff became involved in pioneering camping holidays to Central Australia and Queensland.

“Our people are so passionate about dreaming up once-ina-lifetime travel experiences for our guests and making them possible. That makes me really proud.”

“We grew up hearing stories about a coach bogged in a riverbed, or new places dad was exploring,” Robert remembers.

2017 will mark 90 years since Bill McGeary purchased his first bus. It’s been an unforgettable journey so far – and we look forward to celebrating it with you.

As it turned out, Geoff not only possessed his father’s entrepreneurial spirit, but also his own insatiable appetite for discovering new destinations.

destination to ensure that passengers enjoy high levels of cleanliness, comfort and service. The hotels listed in this brochure will be used on almost all holiday packages; however, if a change is necessary for any reason, APT will endeavour to ensure that alternative accommodation is of an equivalent standard to those shown. Hotel rooms are generally not available for check-in before 3 pm and require check-out by 10 am. Twin or Double Rooms Accommodation in all hotels and camps, regardless of the rating, is in standard rooms (sometimes named superior/deluxe) based on twins or doubles unless otherwise stated. Pre & Post Extended Touring All extensions are based on availability at time of booking. Passengers will be assisted by local guides or the Train Manager on Rovos Rail as the APT Tour Director will not accompany the group. Gratuities are not included on extended touring packages. Passengers Needing Special Assistance APT requires passengers with disabilities or special needs to be accompanied by a companion capable of providing all necessary assistance and support. Any disability or medical condition requiring special attention or special equipment must be reported to APT at the time of booking to ensure your needs can be met and that the tour you have chosen is suitable for you. APT will make reasonable efforts to accommodate the special needs of disabled passengers, but is not responsible for any denial of services by carriers, hotels, trains, restaurants or other independent suppliers, or for any additional associated expenses. Coaches and 4WD vehicles are not equipped with wheelchair ramps. Wheelchairs and walkers cannot be carried on coaches or 4WD vehicles due to space limitations. For safety reasons, passengers in wheelchairs cannot be carried on ramps, or up stairs or 4WD vehicles. APT is unable to provide individual assistance to any passenger for walking, dining, boarding or alighting coaches or other transportation vehicles or other personal needs. Visa & Passports All passengers must have a valid passport that is valid for at least six months after the holiday package return date. Passengers must have two blank pages available in their passports for your entry permit into South Africa. Passengers must consult with the appropriate consulates to ensure that they have any applicable visas for countries included in the holiday package prior to departure. Passengers are solely responsible for meeting necessary passport and visa entry requirements and paying all associated costs. APT is not responsible for delays or missed portions of the holiday package resulting from incorrect travel documents or visas. Health & Fitness Travel is in 4WD vehicles in game parks and all throughout East Africa. Anyone with back conditions or limited mobility should seek advice from their doctor about joining this tour. Dust may also irritate contact lenses, therefore we suggest bringing glasses. In many of the cities and game lodges, walking is required on uneven ground and gravel paths, and good mobility is needed getting on/off 4WD vehicles, coaches, river ships and trains. We strongly recommend a visit to the doctor and dentist before travelling to overseas destinations. It is your responsibility to advise APT of any pre-existing medical conditions that may affect the normal conduct of a trip and the enjoyment of others while on tour. A Health, Fitness & Mobility Questionnaire will be provided and requested to be completed at the time of booking if you advise of any health, fitness or mobility issues. APT is not liable for any injury, illness, or loss of enjoyment which could have been reasonably prevented had we been made aware of a pre-existing condition and been provided an opportunity to review it. We will not be responsible for any costs associated with cancellation penalties or the return of passengers from a tour, and a refund for lost touring cannot be claimed. Yellow Fever vaccination is required. Freedom of Choice™ Sightseeing Inclusions Minimum and maximum group numbers apply on Freedom of Choice™ excursions. If your first choice of Freedom of Choice™ sightseeing inclusion is unavailable you may be asked to choose an alternative. Public Holidays & Festivals Virtually all countries have public holidays, religious or otherwise. The festivities may temporarily disrupt your holiday and some religious holidays may result in a reduction of facilities and entertainment. Superdeals, Fly Deals & Special Offers Conditions apply. Strictly limited offer on set departures. Subject to availability at time of booking. Cannot be combined with any other offer unless specified and maybe withdrawn at any time. For full terms and conditions relating to any Superdeal, Fly Deal or Special Offer on your booking, please go to www.aptouring.com. au/specialdeals Other Special Offers Special Deals and Specials Offers other than those

Airfares Air travel is arranged with independent airlines. APT will arrange air travel as advertised in connection with your holiday package or otherwise arranged with APT. All airfares are subject to flight and booking class availability. Airfares will be booked and ticketed upon receipt of your deposit to avoid price or tax increases. Airport taxes vary for each departure point and routing of airline. Airline schedules are subject to change without notice. Once air tickets are issued, airline amendment and/or cancellation fees apply and, in some cases, are non-refundable. Name changes and voluntary date and schedule changes will incur fees. APT is not liable for delays or disruptions of air travel. Once tickets are issued APT will have no other liability and will not be responsible for refunding the cost of any services booked in conjunction with the flights. Out of Date Range Flights If airlines have not published their schedule at the time this brochure was printed or at the time of booking, APT will estimate the cost of airfares connected with your holiday package. When the airline releases flight inventory and airfares, APT will confirm seats and pricing to you by sending you an updated invoice. Once flights have been confirmed by you and payment has been received APT will issue your ticket/s. APT Deposit Cancellation Peace of Mind Applicable when an upfront fee of $75 per person is paid with your deposit. The holiday package can be cancelled prior to the final payment date and your deposit will be retained as an APT holding credit to be used for future bookings. If Deposit Cancellation Peace of Mind is claimed, monies held must be used on a future cruise or tour and cannot be redeemed against the original cruise or tour departure date. Deposit held in credit will exclude fees imposed by third parties, including but not limited to air travel, rail travel and hotels. When booking airfares through APT (including when taking advantage of a special offer that includes air travel), standard airline cancellation fees will apply. In some cases, airfares will be non-refundable. In the event of cancellation, these fees will be deducted from the deposit paid, and therefore the credit being held. APT Deposit Cancellation Peace of Mind applies to new bookings only and is only valid up until 100 days prior to travel. After three years, unused credit funds will incur the original cancellation conditions as per brochure. This does not replace travel insurance, which we strongly recommend at the time of booking. Travel Insurance Travel Insurance is not included in your holiday package. For your protection we strongly recommend that you purchase comprehensive travel insurance that includes (without limitation) coverage for medical expenses, loss of luggage, cruise and land content and airfare charges that may occur due to cancellation, disruption, loss of deposit or strikes. Travel Information & Documents After booking you will receive an invoice with all important information relevant to your holiday package. We strongly recommend you check the details carefully and read the included information. Please ensure that you check your flight timings carefully on your tickets, particularly early morning departures. Approximately 21 days before departure you will receive your e-ticket together with your final itinerary. However in the case of late bookings, charges or late payment, tickets may be emailed to you. Special Requests Where a special request (eg. diet, room location, twin or double bedded room, a particular facility at a hotel, flight seat requests and/or particular meals) is an important factor in your choice of holiday, you must advise us when your booking is made. APT will pass your request onto the hotel, airline or other supplier but cannot guarantee that it will be accommodated. APT will also pass on any dietary requests to the airline but we strongly recommend that you check directly with the airline once your tickets have been issued. The provision of any special request does not constitute a term of your contract with us. Confirmation that a special request has been noted or passed on to the supplier or the inclusion of the special request on your confirmation invoice or any other documentation is not confirmation that the request will be met. Unless and until specifically confirmed, all special requests are subject to availability. Credit Card Surcharges If you pay APT by credit card, credit card surcharges of between 1% and 3% will be added your tour price. IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE OR CANCEL YOUR HOLIDAY Changes or Additions to Your Holiday If you want to change any part of your holiday arrangements after the invoice has been issued, we will do our best to make the change, but it may not be possible. Any request for changes must be made in writing by the person who made the original booking, or his or her travel agent. If it is possible to make the change, it will be subject to an administration charge and payment of any further costs incurred as a result of the change.

Cancellation of Ticketed Airfares An APT cancellation fee of $50 per person applies for ticketed airfares, in addition to any airline cancellation fees that are applicable. Changes to Ticketed Airfares If you wish to amend the date or routing on your ticketed air booking, an APT amendment fee of $30 per person for the first change and $85 for any subsequent changes will be charged in addition to airline change fees and additional taxes that are applicable. IF WE CHANGE OR CANCEL YOUR HOLIDAY Brochure Accuracy APT has endeavoured to ensure that the information given in this brochure about accommodation, itineraries etc., is correct to the best of its knowledge at the time of going to print. However, advertised descriptions and facilities and prices may change after publication. We recommend that you confirm the details of your chosen holiday package at the time of booking. Additionally, flight times, carriers and routes in the brochure are given for guidance only. Flight timings are set by airlines and affected by events outside our control. APT will keep to the brochured itinerary as close as possible, sometimes the itinerary will change. These changes may also be a result of local conditions, weather conditions and annual events. APT will endeavour to notify you of any significant changes prior to your departure. Any change in the identity of the airline, flight timings or aircraft type (if advised) will not entitle you to cancel or change to other arrangements without paying any applicable cancellation fees except where specified in these booking conditions. If We Change or Cancel Your Holiday Before Your Departure APT endeavours to provide you with all the services confirmed to you at the time of your booking. However, we plan arrangements a long time in advance of your departure date using independent suppliers such as airline, hotels, etc., over whom we have no direct control. On occasions changes do have to be made, and APT reserves the right to cancel or amend holiday packages/ excursions accordingly. Group tours require a minimum number of bookings in order for the tour to be financially viable and to have a pleasant group atmosphere. In the event that adequate numbers cannot be achieved, it may be necessary to cancel a scheduled departure and offer the nearest possible alternative date (or a full refund of monies paid for arrangements made by APT). Force Majeure Force Majeure means the occurrence of an event that is beyond APT’s reasonable control and which could not have been reasonably prevented by APT, which includes, but is not limited to: (a) war, armed conflict, criminal damage, riot, civil strife, industrial dispute, terrorist activity or the threat of any such acts; (b) natural disaster (including but not limited to flooding, fire, earthquake, landslide), adverse weather conditions, high or low water levels; (c) nuclear or other industrial accident causing environmental pollution or contamination; or (d) change in law, meaning, enactment, amendment (including repeal) in the law or administration of any law in Australia or any jurisdiction or territory relevant to the booking contract, which includes changes in statute, regulation, determination, by-law, declaration, licence and the common law as applicable from time to time. Termination of Booking Contract or Change of Travel Arrangements Due to Force Majeure If APT, in its reasonable opinion, considers that any Force Majeure event prevents APT (whether directly or through its employees, contractors, subcontractors and agents) from lawfully or safely providing any products or services subject of the booking contract with you, APT may immediately by written notice: (a) terminate the booking contract (in whole or in part); or (b) change your travel arrangements as reasonably practicable to ensure your safety and invoice you for any additional costs. Limitation of Liability in the Event of Force Majeure In the event that APT cancels or changes your travel

arrangements in any way due to a Force Majeure event, APT will not be liable to you in contract, tort, statute or restitution for any loss (including, but not limited to, loss of deposit or purchase price and loss of enjoyment), damage, costs, charges, expenses or injury resulting from or in connection with (whether directly or indirectly): (a) the cancellation or change to your travel arrangements; or (b) the Force Majeure event. APT is not liable to refund any part of the deposit or purchase price paid by you if APT subsequently changes or cancels your travel arrangements in connection with a Force Majeure event. Force Majeure events are unpredictable and beyond APT’s control. It is your responsibility to purchase travel insurance to adequately protect yourself against these risks. ON HOLIDAY Local Purchases APT is not responsible for any items you may purchase locally ie: jewellery/furniture etc. You acknowledge that you are solely responsible for any import duty or freight costs. Personal Belongings & Lost Items For security reasons valuables should be kept to a minimum and packed in your hand luggage along with your medicines, camera, film, electrical or batteryoperated appliances, as well as basic essentials such as a change of clothing and toiletries. It is your responsibility to look after your property at all times and you must ensure you are adequately covered by comprehensive travel insurance in the event of any loss. Disruption to Itinerary Arrangements Itineraries are intended as a guide only and are subject to alteration without notice. Alternations may be necessary for various reasons including, without limitation, road, river or weather conditions, strikes or airline schedule changes, and other reasons beyond APTs control. If conditions render any routes unsafe for navigation, APT reserves the right to provide alternative services including, but not limited to, accommodation on the docked ship or substitute land arrangements. Sometimes for reasons beyond our control, it may be necessary to make alterations to your itinerary.

Your travel agent will forward deposits and other payments to us on your behalf, but your travel agent is not our agent for the purpose of receipt of monies. Receipt of deposits and subsequent payments by the travel agent does not constitute receipt of those monies by us and the travel agent has no authority expressed or implied to receive monies on our behalf. There is no liability on the part of APT in respect to any monies paid to your travel agent unless and until APT notifies you (by way of a booking confirmation advice or payment receipt advice) that monies have been received by APT. Additionally, you are not entitled to any refund for any alterations to your itinerary that are caused or contributed to by any flood or water levels or such other events which are beyond our control. APT cannot guarantee exact arrival and departure times for carriers and operators used by APT and APT will not be liable for failure to make connections with any other services or attractions beyond its control.

Please note that Australian authorities require that travellers who have visited Africa hold valid Yellow Fever certificates upon re-entry. Anti-malaria medication is recommended for those travelling to Africa. Be sure to speak to your doctor or visit a travel clinic at least eight to ten weeks before departing to discuss your recommended vaccines and malaria medication.

HOW MUCH LUGGAGE CAN WE TRAVEL WITH TO AFRICA? South Africa Luggage for all internal flights is limited to 20kg, and can be packed in a bag of your choice.

What level of physical fitness do I need to have? Our tours throughout Africa are not physically demanding, however our 4WD safaris and tours cover areas of rough terrain. For this reason, anyone with back conditions or limited mobility should consult their doctor before travel. Walking tours are often on uneven ground and dust can irritate contact lenses, so we recommend bringing glasses with you. What clothing do I need to bring with me? During your tour throughout Africa temperatures will generally be mild. However, heading out on morning and evening game drives it can be considerably cooler. We suggest you pack multiple layers of clothing to ensure you stay comfortable. For walking, bring comfortable shoes. There is no need to bring heavy boots on safari.

Kenya & Tanzania Due to the smaller aircrafts and 4WD vehicles, passengers will need to reduce their luggage weight to a maximum of 15kg and pack luggage into a soft bag. Namibia Luggage for all internal flights is limited to 10kg and must be packed in a soft bag (not provided). Excess luggage can be stored at Windhoek.
