Opening Plenary Community Engagement: Encouraging Citizen Participation in Public Education Matters Dave Meslin Dave Meslin’s business cards read: “Dave Meslin: Community Catalyst.” If we had more community activists like Dave Meslin, the world would be a better place. In Toronto and globally, the irrepressible Meslin has successfully blended mainstream politics with grassroots activism, along with the arts community. Local politics -- schools, zoning, council elections -- hit us where we live. So why don’t more of us actually get involved? Is it apathy? Dave Meslin says no. He encourages us to recognize apathy as a web of barriers that reinforce disengagement - and t0 work together to dismantle the obstacles. You can see an abbreviated version of one of his presentations at Dave Meslin on TED.

Concurrent Workshops A Creating Effective Local Education Agreements Tyrone McNeil, President and Jan Haugen, Manager of Executive Services, FNESC With a well-designed Local Education Agreement (LEA) between First Nations communities and school districts, the foundation can be set for improved First Nations student achievement. To help realize the full potential of LEAs and encourage their development, the First Education Steering Committee (FNESC) has been working with First Nations community representatives to develop an innovative new LEA toolkit and sample LEA, and it has been sharing these resources in regional workshops across BC. The LEA resources provide valuable support to First Nations and School Districts in key areas, such as techniques for improved communication/cross‐cultural understanding and techniques for effective LEA implementation. What does it take to organize and facilitate effective community engagement? Catherine Rockandel, Consultant, Rockandel and Associates If are interested in learning what works and why then this session is for you. Using a recent BC School District case study, participants will be introduced to the principles and strategies for planning and managing effective community engagement. You will gain insight into tools and techniques that support staff and trustees to understand community concerns, preferences and priorities. The workshop will highlight best practices that build trust and support trustees to improve decision-making.

EVENT Succession Planning for Boards of Education Nancy Brennan, Seconded Assistant Superintendent and Christie Seed, Director, HR Business Services, BCPSEA For each school district in British Columbia, our data that tells us that succession planning at the local level is a necessity. Succession planning is defined as the process by which you identify key leadership positions (or roles critical to an organization) and develop strategic plans to backfill them in order to ensure organizational stability and success. But what exactly does good succession planning look like and how does a school district go about it? Where do you begin? Succession planning is simple in theory but can become difficult to put into action if you haven’t outlined in advance your objectives and set out a concrete plan to achieve the desired results. In this session we aim to: •

Outline what succession planning really is and its value to the employer

Provide a simple approach to succession planning

Highlight the factors critical to a successful program

Identify how to customize a plan to the needs of your school district

Define the various roles needed to support and implement a succession plan (who does what?)

Twitter for Trustees – Essential Communication Tool or Troublesome Timewaster? Christine Younghusband, Trustee, SD#46, Sunshine Coast Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Blogger, WordPress, and many other means of social media can provide unique opportunities for school trustees to share ideas, dialogue with others, or learn new information. This session will look at reasons why (or why not) Twitter and other social networking tools can be an effective way to connect with constituents, celebrate student learning, follow experts in the field, or network with educators, parents, and other school trustees. By the end of the session, you may open a Twitter account, gain new followers, or find more people to follow.

EVENT Xerox Educational Assessment Management System: XEAMS Donna Eychner, Xerox Business Services, Eric Hamby, Xerox Innovation Group and Jon Reaver, Director of Instruction K-12 School District No.23 The power of formative assessments to enable individualized instruction, and the payoff such instruction can bring, are well known in the education community. Escalating demands on teacher time that encroach on the core student – teacher interaction are also well-known. A key challenge is to provide frequent and specific feedback on what students are learning day-to-day, not just after instruction has been completed, coupled to support tools that could suggest how to modify instruction to meet each student’s needs. Accomplishing this goal while also freeing up teacher time to do what they do best – bringing joy and creativity into the classroom – is the aim of the Xerox IgniteTM software. This session will provide information on the Xerox IgniteTM software ; what it does to provide more detailed information on students, and how that information can be used to make decisions in the classroom for informed instruction. SD 23 has been piloting this software at two of the local elementary schools. They will share their goals for the project and feedback from the teachers that have been using the software.

Concurrent Workshops B Alternatives to Suspension Dan Reist, Centre for Addictions Research of BC, University of Victoria An abundance of research shows that suspending or expelling students for substance use at school does little good. Study after study has proven that isolating struggling students from the school community does not help them change their minds or behaviours. If anything, social isolation leads to increased substance use and other risky behaviours, particularly for those without good relationships with supportive adults. And locking the “bad kids” out has not made school life better or safer for the “good kids” either. After all, students use drugs for all sorts of reasons, not just because they’re aware of other kids using them. Working Well with the Media Sherri Moore-Arbour, BCSTA Director of Communications Students Connecting with Communities: SD#23 Presentations Harmony Day at Chute Lake Elementary School Teacher Tim Vanbrummelen with students Calla Johnston and Kristian Oppenheim One day a year in February, students and staff all across the Central Okanagan celebrate our differences and recognize what unites us. Harmony Day is a day when people from all walks of life join together to share our unique cultural backgrounds. History tells us that ethnic, religious and racial differences have often resulted in broken relationships, divided communities, fighting, and even war. But in School District 23 on Harmony Day, we celebrate how our differences can draw us together as ONE! In this workshop, you will be shown a wide variety of whole school and classroom activities and be given the tools to take Harmony Day home to your school districts. AGM 2013
