Agriculture Is Vital to Kansas’ Economy 

In 2014 Kansas’ agriculture industry contributed more than $18.3 billion to the state’s economy.



Kansas has more than 61,000 farms and 46 million acres of farmland. More than 68 percent of farms are less than 500 acres, with an average farm size of 747 acres. o 42,256 farms have less than 500 acres. o 7,208 have between 500-1000 acres. o 12,309 have more than 1000 acres.



Kansas ranks first in the nation in wheat production, which accounts for about 12 percent of the state’s total agricultural production. All of the wheat grown in Kansas in one year would fit in a train stretching from western Kansas to the Atlantic Ocean.



In terms of revenue generated, other top products include corn, soybeans, cattle, and hogs. Additionally, the state ranks sixth in farm exports. Crop Insurance Is Vital to Kansas’ Agricultural Sector



Crop insurance protected $4.4 billion of liability on growing crops in Kansas in 2015. There were 19 million acres insured and more than $346 million was paid to farmers in indemnities for production and/or revenue losses.



The top commodities (liability) for crop insurance protection in 2015 were: o Wheat - $1.5 billion, protecting 8.4 million acres. o Corn - $1.5 billion, protecting 3.2 million acres. o Soybeans - $808 million, protecting 3.3 million acres. o Grain Sorghum - $518 million, protecting 2.7 million acres.



The private crop-hail insurance product provided an additional $1.2 billion in liability protection on growing crops in Kansas.
