ON THE COVER PETE is our adorable cover boy for March. He’s a 1½-year old Corgi mix who absolutely loves his people. He needs a special home, however, because he sustained a back injury not long ago and needs to be in a home with no stairs. Pete also needs to be an only pet in a home with no children since he gets jealous when others are getting attention. For more info, call Charlie’s Angels at 828-885-3647. Point of View We Need to Celebrate Every New Animal-Friendly Testing Success Story

By Susan Bird Scientists have developed a way to avoid testing on animals to determine toxicity effects on our kidneys. That’s excellent news, and something we need to draw attention to. Dr. Daniele Zink and Dr. Loo Lit-Hsin from Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star) recently developed an animal-free protocol for predicting toxic effects of chemicals on human kidneys. It’s one less horrendous test animals will have to undergo as unwilling stand-ins for humans. “Among the many challenges associated with using animal models to predict the nephrotoxicity of a new compound are the long time required, high costs involved, unreliable results due to inter-species differences, as well as ethical issues,” the study itself declared. Just the fact that medical researchers actually acknowledge there are ethical issues associated with using animals for research is a welcome relief. The other important acknowledgement is also key. The scientific community has been aware for some time now that using animals as human substitutes provides unreliable date. Humans are different than other animals. What works on a non-human isn’t guaranteed to work on a human. The phrase “apples and oranges” was never more apt. “The more I worked on this, the more I realized that animal models are very inaccurate in that they cannot fully reflect human physiology,” Dr. Loo told the Straits Times. Dr. Zink and Dr. Loo figured out that they could isolate human kidney cells and produce more of them using stem cells. The team didn’t set out to develop a non-animal protocol. It just happened when it became clear that animal tests weren’t cutting it. Overall, the accuracy of animal-based testing is only about 60 percent, according to Dr. Loo. That’s not acceptable. The accuracy rate of the new in-vitro protocol for kidney cells was an impressive 90 percent. “Five years ago, when we started testing nanomaterials on human cells, I became aware that there are no good in-vitro predictive methods,” Dr. Zink, principal research scientist and team leader for this project, told the Straits

Times. “The result of this makes me really happy. For ethical and scientific reasons, animal-free methods are very important.” Dr. Loo and Dr. Zink won the 2016 Lush Science Prize for this achievement. It’s the largest prize currently awarded for developing cruelty-free, animal-free scientific research methods. “What really struck me was that they had achieved a lot in such a short time,” Dr.Gill Langley, senior science adviser for Humane Society International and one of the judges for the Lush Science Prize, told the Straits Times. “Some non-animal tests in toxicity have taken years and years to be developed, and even then, there is a lot of resistance from scientists in accepting them.” That’s why celebration of results like this one is so important. The scientific community must be urged to accept — and yes, enthusiastically embrace – methods of testing and experimenting that do not involve or harm animals. We need to chide scientific resistance to demonstrably effective results like this one. Better still, we need to trumpet — loud and long — the identification of new, non-animal techniques every time a new development like this comes along. Lab animals desperately need our help to get them out of laboratories for good. Here is one more way to help make their eventual freedom a reality. Broadcast the news of successes like this one on your social media accounts. Make some noise about it. Contribute to the pressure that continues to build against using animals for anything that happens in a lab. We’re living in the 21st century. We should have stopped experimenting on our animal friends a long, long time ago. They’re here on the planet with us, not for us. We only do this to them because we’re stronger and we can. It doesn’t mean we should. So celebrate these scientific victories every time you see one in the news. They’re tremendously important milestones for the animals.

SMOKEY & BANDIT are a pair of Lab/ Dachshund mixes who are beyond adorable! Smokey (R) is 2-years old and Bandit (L) is 5-years old. Smokey is a little more laid back than Bandit but the energy level of both of them can be considered moderate. Both are very smart but when they came to us, were not housebroken. However they are being trained and making good progress. They love people, playing, and going for a walk is always an exciting time for them. These boys do not like to share their food or their treats, so meal time will have to be in separate locations. They respond with sheer joy to affection and need a family who will love them forever. HELENA is a petite, white kitty who is 1-2 years old. We believe she is deaf, so she will need to be an indoor-only cat. She is sweet and affectionate, and will be a devoted feline friend for a loving family.

2017: Chained Dogs Still Allowed in Buncombe County By Marilyn Walker A recent segment on Good Morning America featured the story of a dog name Bear that had been confined to a chain the entire 15 years of his life. His owner had placed the chain on him as a puppy where he was forced to endure harsh winters, hot summers, boredom, neglect and lack of medical care on a small piece of dirt day in and day out. Bear had no way of knowing his life would not end the same way it began…at the end of a chain. His life changed dramatically when ‘Guardians of Rescue’ found him chained to a dog house in the backyard of a home in Suffolk County, NY. They came with tools and began cutting away at what was keeping him from a life of freedom and a chance to be loved and respected for the sentient being he was created to be. “He is being given a chance now to finally find a forever home, somewhere he can live the rest of his days spoiled with affection. However, we cannot do it without the help of the community,” said his rescuer. It’s hard to fathom that in 2017, many dogs across Buncombe County are still, by law, confined to a chain or

small pen their entire lives with no legal recourse. In 2014, ChainFree Asheville/Unchain Buncombe fought tirelessly for an anti-tethering ordinance that would prevent dogs from being chained day and night unattended and exposed to all types of inclement weather. The ordinance failed to pass and the dogs were given five more feet of chain instead! According to Animal Control, the current ordinance doesn’t even require owners to provide warm bedding for their houses when temperatures drop dangerously low. Their only hope is if concerned neighbors can offer to provide it for them. A few years ago, there were reports of dogs actually freezing to death while tied to their chains and doghouses. A recent petition to ban perpetual chaining stated that "the current law is outdated and dogs should not be expected to live outside on a chain 24/7, especially in a state that has felony animal cruelty laws." I pray in my lifetime, counties like Guilford, New Hanover, Cumberland County and others in North Carolina, will not be the only counties making it illegal to chain a dog 24/7 its entire lifetime, and dogs like Bear will finally be given the freedom to live humanely as “Man’s Best Friend.”

Devoted Human: A Local E-Commerce Site for Pets and People! What would you say if someone asked if you were a devoted human? You love your pets. You treat them like family. You give them tons of love, attention, and goodies to show them how much they mean to you. According to Meredith Bennett, founder of Devoted Human, of course that makes you a devoted human! It’s how she defines pet lovers and how she sees herself, as a proud pet momma to Josie (the puppy) and the pussycats (Oscar and Felix). Devoted Human is an e-commerce site dedicated to high quality, American-made handcrafted goods for pets and their people. Her site includes products “For the Cat,” “For the Dog,” and “For the Human,” including cat beds, ID tags, dog collars and leashes, pet soaps, pottery bowls and mugs, jewelry, clothing, cat- and dog-themed art, and even laser-etched wooden rolling pins with paw print designs. After feeling frustrated and disappointed by the questionable materials used in the cheaply-made pet products found on the shelves of big box pet stores, Meredith began searching for higher quality products online for her own furry family. She turned to Etsy, an online site that sells handcrafted goods, and was shocked to find how challenging it was to find the right product. She explains, “I went onto Etsy and searched for US-based handmade cat toys. I got 16,000 results! No customer is going to search through that many products to find the right one. It’s too frustrating!” Not only that, the rules for Etsy have grown so lax over the years that some of the items identified as handmade in America are in fact mass-produced and made overseas. The quality artisan’s products get lost among the junk. Growing up in Annapolis, MD and living in Asheville for the last 6+ years, her circle of friends has included many artists and craftsmen. She realized how difficult it must be for these artists to find their customers and for their customers to find them. With a passion for animals, a background in leading

EAT VEGAN FOR A DAY Since 1985, thousands around the world have celebrated the first day of Spring by eating vegan for the day in a huge international event called Meatout. Every year, Meatout raises awareness of the benefits of eating vegan: helping animals, achieving great health, and saving the planet. The educational events range from simple information tables, exhibits, and cooking demos to elaborate receptions and festivals. Visitors are asked to “kick the meat habit” on March 20 (first day of spring) and explore a wholesome, nonviolent diet of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. PAGE 10 • CRITTER MAGAZINE • MARCH 2017

sales and marketing teams, and an MBA in Social Entrepreneurship, she set about creating Devoted Human to help three key groups: artists, customers, and animal rescue organizations. Devoted Human gives pet-loving customers easy access to unique, well-designed, American-made products. It provides a platform where maker’s goods are highlighted rather than hidden amongst the junk. And each month, Devoted Human donates to a different grassroots animal rescue organization and shares the story of the organization on the company blog and through social media. Many of the artists and craftsmen on Devoted Human are located in the Asheville area, including pottery from River Arts District potters, Maria Andrade and Hannah McGehee, pet soaps from Beauvivo, original ID tag designs from Dog Tag Art, leashes from Oowee Products, cat perch covers and cat toys from Climb-It Cat, t-shirts from Asheville Screen Printing, and art from Timm Watrous. 3-20 2017 Meatout is also supported by a broad coalition of environmental and health-focused nonprofits, generous plant-based food companies, many elected officials across the country, and countless individuals. Some of the health advocacy groups include the American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute, Johns Hopkins University, and the American Heart Association, have since launched their own campaigns to promote consumption of plant-based foods. CATMAN-2 operates the largest cats-only, no-kill shelter in WNC. All cats are tested for feline leukemia, have all vaccinations, and if old enough, are spayed or neutered. Adoption fees are $60. Some cats are de-clawed, some are pure breed. You will surely find the cat of your dreams. To schedule a visit, call Harold at (828) 293-0892. Or view the cats online at www.catman2.org. Remember, each adoption will open a space for another rescued or abandoned cat.

BARNEY is a sweet and loving dog. Once he trusts you, he'll stay by your side constantly and love you more every day. When you're petting him, he'll give a big show, rolling on his back with a great big smile and wiggling around to let you know just how much he's enjoying it. He is pretty high-energy, but is starting heart worm treatment soon, so he must get used to more rest. Most times he is content to curl up and go to sleep, but sometimes he gets puppy-like bursts of energy and goes running through the house! With some consistent and treatbased training, Barney will reward your patience ten-fold. NIDORINA is a sweet little female guinea pig, currently residing in a loving foster home. Please contact her foster mom, Athena at [email protected] to learn more about her.

CHORIZO is a beautiful 6-month old kitten who loves to play with cat toys, chase a laser pointer, climb a cat tree and have fun. He is curious, has excellent litter habits and always likes to be around his humans, but he is still a little skittish when you reach out to touch him. He just needs a little time to adjust. When he's taking a nap or having his favorite treats, you can pet him just fine, and he loves it. Chorizo does well with other cats his size or larger and ignores dogs but would probably prefer a home without small children. Come by the adoption center to meet cute Chorizo today!

World’s Fastest Land Animal is Now Racing Extinction By Alicia Graef Cheetahs are the fastest land animal on earth, but conservationists are raising serious concerns about a threat they can’t outrun: extinction. While the plight of big cats around the world has gained growing awareness, it’s been mostly focused on lions and tigers. Now cheetahs are taking the spotlight, but it’s unfortunately over concerns that these amazingly fast animals are going to disappear forever unless urgent action is taken. According to a new study just published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, which was led by a team from the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), Panthera and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), there are only an estimated 7,100 cheetahs left in existence in the wild globally – and they’re all in trouble. “This study represents the most comprehensive analysis of cheetah status to date. Given the secretive nature of this elusive cat, it has been difficult to gather hard information on the species, leading to its plight being overlooked. Our findings show that the large space requirements for cheetah, coupled with the complex range of threats faced by the species in the wild, mean that it is likely to be much more vulnerable to extinction than was previously thought,” said Dr. Sarah Durant, ZSL/WCS lead author and Project Leader for the Rangewide Conservation Program for Cheetah and African Wild Dog. Cheetahs once ranged widely throughout Africa, the Middle East and southwestern Asia, but they’ve continued to suffer from a variety of threats: habitat loss, fragmentation, conflicts with humans, a loss of prey and being hit by vehicles. They are also threatened by the illegal cheetah trade, which is driven by the demand for their skin and parts, and for live cheetahs who are sold as exotic pets. They are now believed to have lost 91 percent of their historic range, and 79 percent of existing cheetah populations are now made up of fewer than 100 individuals. More concerning is that a majority of them live outside of protected areas, where they’re even more vulnerable to pressures. Over just the past 16 years, the population in Zimbabwe alone has dropped from 1,200 to just 170 individuals. Conservationists believe that cheetahs are even more likely to go extinct than previously thought. For the past three decades, cheetahs have been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, but the study’s authors want to see that changed. They are now calling for them to be uplisted to Endangered in the hope that the new listing will help focus much needed conservation efforts on their plight. Ultimately, they want to see on-the-ground efforts that include protecting habitat, working with governments of cheetah range states, and providing incentives for local communities to work toward coexisting with cheetahs. All of these efforts will require public support, political will and a lot of funding. “We’ve just hit the reset button in our understanding of how close cheetahs are to extinction. The take-away from this pinnacle study is that securing protected areas alone PAGE 16 • CRITTER MAGAZINE • MARCH 2017

is not enough. We must think bigger, conserving across the mosaic of protected and unprotected landscapes that these far-ranging cats inhabit, if we are to avert the otherwise certain loss of the cheetah forever,” said Panthera’s Cheetah Program Director, Dr. Kim YoungOverton. Schoolchildren Raise Over $7,200 to Help Dog Hit by Car By Laura Goldman Over 80 percent of the students who attend Los Amigos Elementary School in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., are from socio-economically disadvantaged families, but that didn’t stop them from doing everything they could to raise money to save an animal in need. It began in early December, when a school employee found an injured black Lab mix hiding in bushes near the parking lot. “There’s this really hurt dog,” Vice Principal Sharon Linville heard over a walkie-talkie. “I’m sure this dog is going to die, he’s in so much pain.” She and other employees brought the dog blankets and water, and contacted the Rancho Cucamonga Animal Care and Adoption Center who came and took him to the facility. The center’s staff veterinarian, Cynthia Servantez, visited the school a few days later to give the students a not-so-good update on the dog they’d named “Black Bart.” He’d been hit by a car and would probably survive, but he needed surgery that would cost about $3,000. An X-ray had revealed that both of Bart’s hips were dislocated. As Dr. Servantez told the students, Bart’s “puzzle pieces had come undone.” The schoolchildren immediately took action to help put those pieces back together. The school launched a “Pennies for Paws” campaign to collect spare change for Bart’s surgery. Every single student made a donation. “They looked through sofa cushions, they gave up their allowance, some of them gave us IOUs,” Linville said. “We have a

All Cinnamon wants is someone’s lap to sit upon and a gentle hand to pet her for the rest of her days. Is that someone you? bunch of Chuck E. Cheese coins that we got.” One week later, the school gave the animal care center a check in the amount of $471.37. Servantez said it was the first time ever that anyone had offered to pay for the medical care of an injured stray dog. The Los Amigos students continued their Pennies for Paws campaign and the momentum continued to build. Yvonne and Art Alvarez, owners of Doggie Couture in Rancho Cucamonga, were so impressed by the students’ efforts that they matched the funds that had been raised. “We wanted them to know if they do something nice, it can make other people do it and then it becomes something big,” said Yvonne Alvarez. Several weeks after he’d been discovered at the school, “Who Let the Dogs Out” played over the speakers as Bart returned for a special guest appearance at a January 23 rally in his honor. Linville announced that the Los Amigos students had surpassed their $3,000 goal – by over $4,200. The extra money would be donated to the animal shelter to help other pets in need. Veterinarian Victoria Impett, who accompanied Bart, told the children to give themselves a pat on the back. Most of them complied. “It might not have seemed like big deal to go home and dig in the couch for a few pennies, but each and every one of you made a huge difference in someone’s life,” she told them. Bart had no ID tag or microchip, and no one has come forward to claim him. He still needs surgery on his right hip. Once he recovers, he’ll be ready for adoption. “He’s starting to kind of blossom into a fabulous dog,” Impett said. As Linville told the students, “This has been an incredible journey, and it’s really cool to be kind.”
