Fireworks Advisory

As Independence Day approaches, it is important to know where one can celebrate the holiday safely. It is also essential to understand the legal ramifications regarding the use of fireworks. Under Colorado state law, the sales and use of “legal fireworks” cannot be prohibited in an unincorporated county area where a fire protection district exists. Municipalities, under home rule, can adopt ordinances that are more restrictive than state law including prohibiting sales, use, and possession of all fireworks within the city boundaries. Each year the careless use of fireworks contributes to personal injuries and large financial losses to property owners, insurance companies and the community. Use of fireworks could also result in criminal charges, such as arson, criminal mischief, and reckless endangerment, as well as civil penalties for damages caused from the fireworks. The City of Centennial has adopted ordinance 2004-17 section 10-10-30, which bans the sale, use, and possession of all fireworks within the city limits, with the exception of a professional outdoor fireworks display. Other cities in Colorado have adopted similar ordinances. The maximum fine for possession and/or use of fireworks within Centennial is $1,000. The use of “illegal fireworks” in unincorporated county areas is a Class 3 Misdemeanor and is punishable with fines up to a maximum of $750 and/or up to six months imprisonment. The Towns of Foxfield, Bennett and Deer Trail have not adopted their own fireworks ordinances, thus they fall under the same enforcement laws as Unincorporated Arapahoe County. In order to avoid accidents and legal consequences, the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office recommends that you celebrate the holiday by watching professional fireworks shows. To report fireworks violations, or file a complaint of fireworks usage in your area, call 303-795-4711. For all true emergency situations call 911.

Special Olympics Summer Games Over fifty law enforcement officers and their family members from across the state of Colorado joined Special Olympics Colorado at this year's State Summer Games in Grand Junction. They stayed on campus at Colorado Mesa University all weekend by presenting medals and supporting our athletes whenever needed. The weekend got off to a great start with more than 1,200 athletes and coaches parading into Ralph Stocker Stadium for opening ceremonies on Friday, June 5. The highlight of the night was all of the officers running into the stadium carrying 30 torches to light the cauldron to officially open the 2015 Summer Games. This was the largest torch run to date and there wasn't a dry eye in the house.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office recently held a Coffee With A Cop event at Whole Foods at The Streets of SouthGlenn. This particular program allows the public to meet with law enforcement in a comfortable, non-threatening, and friendly atmosphere. It also builds upon the partnerships that exist between Whole Foods, the community, and the Sheriff’s Office. The Coffee With A Cop program began in California by the Hawthorne Police Department in 2011 and has since become a nationwide program. Coffee With A Cop events have been hosted in over 175 communities in 36 states. Not only is the program great for citizens, but it also allows officers to reconnect and build relationships with the communities they serve. More information on Coffee With A Cop is available on their website at coffeewithacop.com. The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office has hosted several Coffee With A Cop events over the last two years and has even participated with other law enforcement agencies to host events. This partnership with other police and sheriff offices allows law enforcement an even greater opportunity to meet with citizens they serve since most of the public travel between jurisdictions for work, play, family or daily events. In the photos taken at Whole Foods, you will notice officers talking with shoppers. The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office will continue to partner with local businesses for future Coffee With A Cop events. For more information on our upcoming Coffee with a Cop events please see our website at arapahoesheriff.org or contact Deputy Scott Sickafoose at [email protected] or 720-874-4040.
