Animal Medicines Australia

Executive Director message

18 National Circuit Barton ACT 2600

One of AMA’s key policy priorities is to improve the consistency of

regulations and guidelines for registration and approval of animal health products. As a global industry, better harmonisation will assist our members in bringing the latest animal health innovations to Australia.

AMA pursues this objective through several fora, including multilateral and global collaborative forums such as VICH. VICH seeks to improve consistency of regulatory requirements for animal health products by agreeing on guidelines that will be adopted in key global markets. Cooperative approaches employing high quality science results in guidelines and data principles that are accepted by the three VICH

member markets (the US, EU and Japan) and via outreach and extension, other markets around the world.

Australia is a formal VICH observer. AMA – as Australia’s only industry representative (and in partnership with the APVMA) – seeks to ensure that VICH guidelines are acceptable to and accepted by the Australian regulatory system. This means that global data developed for a US, European or Japanese registration will also be acceptable to the APVMA. AMA’s expectation is that this should reduce costs and barriers to market entry for our members.

AMA is also an active participant in our global industry association, Want to keep up to date? Follow us on LinkedIn, Twitter and subscribe to our eNewsletter here to keep up to date with industry information.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR): An outcome from this month’s G20 meeting in Germany

The G20 recently reaffirmed its commitments to strengthen health systems across the globe, achieve food security, and address AMR.

governors from 20 economies that includes Australia, United States, European Union, China, Indonesia and South Korea, policy outcomes from the G20 have worldwide ramifications.

The Delta Therapy Dogs program is the largest of its kind in Australia. Every week, Delta’s amazing and devoted Volunteer Therapy Dog teams bring joy to the lives of those who need it most. Over 1,000 volunteers and their special dogs visit health care facilities to offer the wonderful benefits of pet therapy, spend time with patients and offer a chat, a floppy ear to listen and a paw to shake.

AMA Executive Director, Ben Stapley, said one of the very important reasons members support the responsible use of antibiotics is because of the devastating affects AMR can have on animals and the food chain.

“AMA identified AMR as an issue some time ago and will continue to work towards the judicious use of antibiotics,” Mr Stapley said.

Exposure draft Bill: Submission of AMA comment

AMA has submitted comments and views on proposed legislative reforms to the

Agricultural Chemicals and Veterinary Medicines Code.

Our submission, available on the AMA website here, supports many of the proposed reforms.

Following his resignation QLD Senator, Larissa Waters, resigned after failing to renounce her Canadian citizenship. In further fallout, National’s MP and Minister for Resources, Matt Canavan, resigned from Cabinet on 25 July 2017 for Italian dual citizenship. But, is taking the matter to the High Court because of the circumstances around his dual nationalities.

We look forward to further consultation and engagement with Government as the proposed Bill is further developed. In particular, the Bill includes measures that may change the way that APVMA considers AMR risk, and AMA is seeking further discussions with the Government to understand the purpose of the change.

PM Malcolm Turnbull announced a restructure of Australia’s security agencies on 17 July with the Australian Federal Police (AFP), Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), Border Force and Department of Immigration. AgCarm presentation The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) announced on 18 July that Commonwealth, NAB, ANZ and Westpac banks would need to increase their cash reserves from 9% to 10.5%. Experts say it is to help with losses in preparation for increased mortgage defaults. ABS figures showed that for June 2017, full-time employment grew by 62,000 jobs- Australia’s ninth straight month of job gains. It means the unemployment rate held steady at 5.6%, after May's figures were revised up.

AMA’s Executive Director, Ben Stapley, presented at this year’s Agcarm Annual Conference to outline AMA’s strategies and priorities for APVMA reform, AMR, stewardship and communications.

Strong interest was shown for AMA’s 5-point plan for APVMA reform as it prepares to relocate to Armidale. This included interest in our support for the University of New England's (UNE) regulatory science program. AMA’s engagement seeks to ensure that the regulator has access to a greater number of individuals that have some of the skills necessary to work with the APVMA.

“This will be an opportunity not only for the APVMA, but once Timor-Leste (aka East Timor) went to an election on 22 July with Fretilin, the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor and CNRT, the National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction, expected to form coalition government for a second time after polling about 30% of the vote each. The WA Libs chose former Pastoralists and Graziers Association’s grains policy director Slade Brockman to replace veterinarian Chris Back on 22 July. Prior to the 2013 election Mr Brockman was Chief of Staff to Finance Minister Matthias Cormann and has degrees in political history and law. Newspoll on 24 July showed the Liberal’s had clawed back support from One Nation while Labor had

established, may also support our members by providing a pool of potential employees for future regulatory positions."

Mr Stapley also discussed important AMA initiatives to develop antimicrobial prescribing guidelines, AMR surveillance advocacy and the outcomes of our "Pet Ownership in Australia" report.

gained ground on the Greens. While the Coalition’s primary vote had increased 35% to 36%, in two-party terms Labor led the Coalition 53% to 47%. CommSec’s State of the State’s July 2017 quarterly report showed NSW on top, VIC edging out the ACT for second spot and WA on the bottom. The IMF’s world economic update on 23 July said that they believe the global economy is still set to grow by 3.5% this year and 3.6% in 2018. Analysists said this is good for Australia as we rely heavily on exports. The Federal Court on 25 July ordered Snowdale Holdings Pty Ltd to pay penalties totalling $750,000 for making false or misleading representations that its eggs were 'free range', in proceedings brought by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). Hot on the hooves of our earlier story about goat yoga, classes have started in the UK. The two hour clases in Devon cost $40.

The classes were originally started by US farmer, Lainey Morse, and Pennywell Farm in the UK thought they would give the concept a go.

Instructor Donna McCheyne said the longer you’re still, the more likely they are to climb on you, which encourages people to be calm and relaxed.

Meanwhile, we can hardly wait for classes to start in Australia.

But, if you are in the Canberra area, “Llama Magic” have “Conversation with Cows” sessions where you can meet miniature Galloways. The cost is $30 for a 1.5 hour session outside Sutton.
