With five games left on the schedule, San Diego’s magic number sits at one (A team's magic number is the number of points needed by a team to clinch a playoff berth. The number is reduced when the team earns standings points, or when the team with the highest possible total outside the playoff picture fails to earn standings points). The Gulls have three home games and two road games remaining to clinch a spot in the Calder Cup Playoffs. Earlier today, Brandon Montour was named to the 2015-16 AHL All-Rookie Team. Montour leads the AHL in power-play assists and power-play points (5-24=29), leads AHL rookies in assists (39) and ranks tied for third in scoring (11-41=52). Among AHL defensemen, Montour ranks second in scoring and assists. College signees Kalle Kossila (St. Cloud State) and Brian Cooper (Nebraska-Omaha) made their San Diego debuts last week. Kossila scored his first professional goal on Apr. 3 vs. Stockton while Cooper went scoreless. Defenseman Andy Welinski (Minnesota-Duluth) and goaltender Kevin Boyle (UMass Lowell) have yet to make their AHL debuts.
