RESOLUTION URGING THE MAYOR AND DISTRICT DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO FUND, REPAIR AND MAINTAIN NEIGHBORHOOD HERITAGE TRAIL SIGNS WHEREAS; In partnership, the District Department of Transportation and Cultural Tourism DC established no fewer than seventeen neighborhood heritage trails in the District of Columbia – including two with signs located within Advisory Neighborhood Commission 1A; WHEREAS; Each neighborhood heritage trail consists of a series of signs located at key locations allowing visitors to walk through each neighborhood from point to point and learn about each neighborhood’s culture and history; WHEREAS; There currently is no maintenance plan or dedicated funding to repair and maintain neighborhood heritage trail signs as they become damaged, occasionally resulting in signs being removed for years at a time with no estimated time for replacement; WHEREAS; ANC1A is currently aware of four missing heritage trail signs, including: • Sign #16: Lift Every Voice: Georgia Ave./Pleasant Plains Heritage Trail. Damaged sign reported nearly 5 years ago (1,800 days), sign missing (Location: Georgia and Kenyon); • Sign #4: Cultural Convergence: Columbia Heights Heritage Trail. Sign missing for nearly 4 years, since at least May 2014 (Location: 14th and Monroe); • Sign #6: Cultural Convergence: Columbia Heights Heritage Trail. Sign missing for nearly 1 ½ years, since at least November 2016 (Location: 13th and Monroe); and, • Sign #17: Cultural Convergence: Columbia Heights Heritage Trail. Sign missing for nearly 2 ½ years, since at least July 2015 (Location: 16th and Harvard); WHEREAS; ANC1A highly values the neighborhood heritage trails and their ability to share our community’s social, cultural, and architectural history to residents and visitors alike; and, WHEREAS; ANC1A strongly rejects the District’s inability to keep our community well maintained due to deferred maintenance and a failure to budget accordingly.

BE IT RESOLVED THAT: Advisory Neighborhood

Commission 1A urges the Mayor and the District Department of Transportation to repair and restore the four missing heritage trail signs herein identified. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT: ANC1A further requests that DDOT develop a process to responsibly keep heritage trail signs well maintained and in good repair. AND BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED THAT: The Chair of Advisory Neighborhood Commission 1A, or any member of the Executive Committee in their absence, shall be authorized to communicate this resolution to the members of the Council of the District of Columbia and all governmental agencies. ##### Certification: After providing sufficient notice for and with a quorum of ____ present at its March 14, 2018, meeting, Advisory Neighborhood Commission 1A voted, with ____ Yeas, ____ Nos and ____ Abstentions, to adopt the above resolution.
