Commissioners’ Message

VOLUNTEERS MAKE THE ANDERSON PARKS GO ROUND

T

he Anderson Parks got started in the 1970s thanks to the investment made by countless volunteers in their community. Fast forward to last year, more than 474 volunteers contributed over 5,100 hours to the community as youth sports coaches, event helpers and as part of community work day events.

WINTER 2018 | AndersonParks.com

Volunteering continues to be a great way to give back to your community! Many events and activities throughout the year rely on volunteers for their time and talent as well as meaningful ways for students to acquire their service hours! Youth sports including volleyball and basketball require knowledgeable and dedicated coaches. Special events such as the Youth and Adult Egg Hunts, Pancakes in the Park, Farmer in the Dell, Greater Anderson Days and Trunk ‘R Treat Fall Festival are popular ways to get involved. Other volunteer opportunities that require work gloves, elbow grease and getting dirty include the Great American Cleanup

in the spring and Make a Difference Day in the fall. If you are interested in volunteering for your community through the Anderson Parks, contact Scott Lahman at SLahman@ AndersonParks.com or (513) 388-5091. The Board of Park Commissioners is grateful to all the volunteers who have helped make the Anderson Parks what they are today. We hope you find time to enjoy the fruits of our many volunteers’ efforts in the parks this winter!

Volunteer Spotlight: Bruce Berno While an average of 676 trees are planted every year in the Anderson Parks, many of these trees are planted by volunteers. In 2012, long-time Anderson Township resident and Anderson Parks volunteer, Bruce Berno, established the “Trees in Gratitude” program. A valuable partnership between Mr. Berno and the Anderson Parks has resulted in 94 trees being planted at Beech Acres Park, Juilfs Park and W. M. Johnson Hills Park since the program’s inception. Mr. Berno provides every aspect of planting for the various native tree species including: purchase, transportation, and planting including soil conditioner, organic starter fertilizer, deer protection fencing and supplies, maintenance and replacement for one full year, and identification signs for most trees. Following are some of the native tree species Mr. Berno plants for generations of tomorrow to enjoy: American Beech; Patriot and Triumph Elms; Chestnut, Chinkapin, Red, Scarlet, Shingle, and Shumard Oaks; and Tulip Poplars.

The Board of Park Commissioners meets in regular session on typically the second Tuesday of each month at the Juilfs Park main office at 6:30 p.m. See AndersonParks.com for the schedule.
