class schedule

Callanwolde School of Dance Introduces a Refreshed Dance Program! Callanwolde Fine Arts Center’s School of Dance has re-imagined and refreshed our entire dance department. This year we have brought in new teachers, scheduled new classes, and created a “performance track” for students who are interested in performance opportunities above and beyond the annual spring recital. In addition, any dance class can be taken “à la carte”, so that dance students at any level can learn and grow outside of the parameters of a performance track schedule. We believe that with our new philosophy/pedagogy, the creation of new classes, and the expertise and energy of new teachers, particularly for ballet-based instruction, we have created the best dance program in Atlanta! Callanwolde’s School of Dance is now a chapter of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts™, which is a program of the National Dance Education Organization, created to recognize outstanding artistic merit, leadership, and academic achievement in students. Callanwolde is committed to honoring our students’ hard work and achievements in dance. Look on Page 9 for more information! new!

Dance Coordinators and Teachers

We are excited to announce that Jerylann Warner (modern, contemporary) and Nicole Johnson (ballet, contemporary) have been appointed overall coordinators of all of our dance classes. Jerylann and Nicole will be joined by additional dance teachers, many of whom taught here last year and/or this summer: Corian Ellisor, Susanna Green, Sean Hilton, Jillian Mitchell, Heather Moffitt, and Erin Rausch. We continue with Irish Dance (Maddie Hane, instructor) and African Dance (Assane Kouyate, instructor). Instructor photos and biographies can be found on our website.

Jerylann Warner

Children’s Classes CHILDREN MUST HAVE PARENTAL SUPERVISION BEFORE AND AFTER THEIR CLASS The aim of this program is to instill in each student the joy of dance as an art form. The program includes technical skills, improvisation and choreography, musical background, and performing experience within a graded structure. Children are allowed a high degree of personal freedom for their own invention and creativity. This educational approach to dance utilizes problem solving, observation, and sharing of experience.

Make-Up Policy:

Callanwolde is not responsible for classes missed due to student absences. Parents should discuss make-up policy with their Instructor. Dance students must make up classes missed during a quarter before the end of that quarter. Children should attend a class of the same age group with the same instructor.

Schedule

Our new schedule has been organized so that there are two tracks - A performance track, and for those who are not performance-focused or who want or need more time in their weekly schedules for other pursuit, all classes can be taken à la carte. We have broken all classes into these groups: Class

Performance Track Requirements

2 ballet, 1 modern or 1 jazz, rehearsal

$810.00

Rising (approximate ages 10 - 12)

À la carte classes

Performances

I M A G I N A T I O N

Students in the performance track will attend rehearsals for the many opportunities both at Callanwolde (i.e., Gala, Salute to America, Jazz on the Lawn, Halloween and Christmas at Callanwolde, etc.) and outside of Callanwolde (area festivals, DeKalb County events, etc.) for performance opportunities to choose from. Our dance coordinators will be working alongside music instructors to create multidisciplinary opportunities with some of our music performance students as well.

Our classes for the youngest dancers Introduce boys and girls ages from age 3 + to the fundamentals of dance, while helping them to increase their physical strength, flexibility, coordination and endurance. Designed to increase the student’s self-confidence and to find a greater joy in moving, dance and personal expression. Additionally, these classes seek to nurture children while developing their motor skills, socialization and physical play; creating a joy in movement that can last a life-time. Pre-Ballet and Pre-Modern classes offer a starting point for the future dancer; the foundations are explored and improved upon. Children should wear comfortable clothes and may dance barefoot or in ballet slippers. Tights and leotard for girls, or plain white t-shirts and loosefitting blue shorts for boys, are preferred. All classes are 12 weeks.

Adult Dance For the adult dancer both beginner and experienced, we offer a number of classes annually. Our current roster includes Contemporary Dance, a mix all forms of dance including, but not limited to modern, jazz, ballet, hip hop and more. This is a perfect class for people just starting in dance or for dance professionals looking to expand upon their technique. West African Dance, led by Senegalese master dancer and choreographer Assane Kouyate and accompanied by live drumming, is a fun way to learn about Senegalese culture and dance. Beginning Irish Dance will keep your balance and rhythmic movements in check! See chart of Specialized Classes for schedules.

Callanwolde’s Newest Offering

Rick Baker School of Music Music Recording Program C

allanwolde Fine Arts Center is thrilled to announce our newest Program: The Callanwolde Music Recording Program. We are honored that this program is under the direction of Callanwolde’s Director of Recording Phil Tan, a three-time Grammy Award-winning sound engineer, who has generously donated his time and resources to help create this exciting program. Atlanta is one of the top ten music recording cities in the nation, yet there has been a lack of music and recording educational programs and studios – until now. Callanwolde’s Music Recording Program is a curriculum of classes designed by Phil Tan to provide low-cost training that will be a great start to those interested in learning Phil Tan (left) and Rick Baker. the art of recording. The Phil Tan curriculum includes Introduction to Music Technology, a three-part course. Upon completion of all three parts with a passing grade, students will earn the Phil Tan Music Recording Certificate which can be an aid for students to gain acceptance into college music recording programs and in some cases, earn college credit or get professional studio internships.

He was accepted to the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston, MA but he could not afford it. Instead, he chose Full Sail University in Florida and upon graduation, landed an internship here in Atlanta, which eventually led him to recording and mixing work with JD (Jermaine Dupri), a friendship and close working relationship that continues to this day. Phil Tan is a 3-time Grammy award recipient whose credits include bestsellers by Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Ne-Yo, Ludacris, Usher, Katy Perry, Janelle Monae and more.

Rick Baker

Callanwolde is fortunate to have Rick Baker on our Board of Directors. As a Wealth Management Investor with Merrill Lynch and previously with Morgan Stanley, Mr. Baker has been honored with numerous awards and recognitions, and has served on many boards including the American Cancer Society, the American Red Cross, and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. In his “other life,” Rick Baker is a musician, vintage guitar collector, music enthusiast, and, for Callanwolde, a benefactor. Group Classes – All Ages Workshop: Formula of a Hit

new!

We are thrilled to have Atlanta-based Traci Hale here this winter to share her amazing knowledge! Traci Hale began her career as a backing singer for R&B stars Keith Sweat and Aaliyah. It was while on tour with Aaliyah in 1996 that she shared songs that she had been writing privately, and soon thereafter began collaborating with others, including Rodney Jerkins - the two of them worked on the Dr. Dolittle (soundtrack) and Brandy’s breakthrough album Never Say Never. Traci went on to write hits for Mýa, Britney Spears and others. In 2010 Hale co-wrote the song “What’s My Name?” with Ester Dean and Stargate, which became a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 for Rihanna.

Welcome to our unit of Fiddle-Dee-Dee where we celebrate the unique joys of the growing child. Our animal theme ties nicely with the musical themes of folk and mountain music. Animal sounds, so appealing to children, naturally prompt imitation and vocal development. Imagine us moving like these animals too as we focus on concepts of high, low, smooth, bumpy, fast and slow. Encourage your child to be creative, to initiate their own ideas and to respond in their own ways. As they play instruments, sing, dance, move and explore, they’ll uncover an engaging musical world while building self-confidence, selfcontrol and communication skills. Callanwolde Fine Arts Center is thrilled to announce our new Ruby Callaway Robinson Greenhouse! Callanwolde is delighted to be partnering with The GreenHouse Foundation by helping our community through our horticulture program. The GreenHouse Foundation was founded by entertainer CeeLo Green and his sister Shedonna Alexander. Honoring a family tradition of community service and philanthropy, the organization was created to continue the legacy started by their grandmother, Ruby Callaway Robinson, Executive Director of CASCADE, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing the issues of drug use and abuse amongst our nation’s youth, and their late mother, Sheila J. Callaway, an ordained minister and one of the first African American female firefighters in the city of Atlanta, Georgia. The GreenHouse Foundation was founded to educate, inspire and influence school-aged children in disadvantaged areas to become responsible stewards of their environment, communities and future. Renovation work will soon begin on the Ruby Callaway Robinson Greenhouse, which will be used for our new Callanwolde School of Horticulture and Culinary Arts and The GreenHouse Foundation program and the GreenHouse Foundation’s educational programs.

We are happy to continue our partnership with The Captain Planet Foundation and as a project learning garden site for DeKalb educators! Check out our new garden, located near the Goldman Retreat. Ask us how you can get involved!

We are thrilled to have Atlanta-based Traci Hale here this winter to share her amazing knowledge! Traci Hale began her career as a backing singer for R&B stars Keith Sweat and Aaliyah. Artist Jiha Moon Artist Jiha Moon is well known in the Atlanta art community and beyond: In Atlanta she has exhibited her work at MOCA GA, Agnes Scott College, Atlanta Contemporary, and the High Museum — her work is in their collection, as well as in the collections of over 15 other institutions including the Hirshhorn Museum of the Smithsonian Institution, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, MOCA GA, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, and the Asia Society and Museum in NYC. She is the recipient of many awards and grants, including a MacDowell Colony Residency and a Joan Mitchell Foundation grant. Currently, an exhibition of hers organized by the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art in Charleston, SC, and curated by Mark Sloan in 2015 is traveling throughout the country. Multi-media artist Jiha Moon was born in Korea, and harvests cultural elements native to Korea, Japan, and China and then unites them with Western elements to investigate the multi-faceted nature of our current global identity as influenced by popular culture, technology, racial perceptions, and folklore. Moon’s witty and ironic work explores how Westerners perceive other cultures and how perceived foreigners see the West. Honoring traditional Asian arts through her use of Hanji paper, Korean silk, and calligraphic brushstrokes, throughout the exhibition she plays with iconography and symbols that have been classified as “foreign” such as blue willow china patterns, fortune cookies (which originated in California but are identified as Chinese), Korean fans, and floating dragons and intermingles them with references to Pop and southern folk art. Her use of the peach identified in Chinese mythology as a symbol of immortality is also a nod to her home state of Georgia’s mascot, the “Georgia Peach.” Her misshapen and whimsical ceramics reference southern folk art face jugs yet are painted in traditional Asian ceramic glazes and motifs. Her unconventional ceramic works reflect her interest in the “beautiful awkward” in which she makes reference to a tourist’s desire to collect foreign and exotic elements to beautify their houses back home. Jiha began teaching painting and drawing at Callanwolde this past fall, and her students – whether they are beginners or upper-level artists — have been really enjoying learning from and with her. We are elated that Jiha has brought her talent and energy to Callanwolde! Check out her website: jihamoon.com and sign up for one of her classes!

Shuttered: The Art of Abandoned Spaces Solo photography exhibition by Jeff Milsteen January 12 – February 24, 2017 Opening reception: Thursday, January 12, 2017 7 – 9 PM Free for Callanwolde members General admission: $5 Gallery Hours Monday – Friday, 10 AM – 8 PM Saturday 10 AM – 3 PM Jeff Milsteen has been a practicing photographer for over 25 years. A past president of the Southeastern Photographic Society and Photographer of the Year of that organization for the last four years, Jeff’s work has been featured in local and national publications, as well as a variety of exhibitions in the Southeast. Jeff has been a frequent presenter and juror for photography groups in the greater metro area and enjoys sharing his insights with other photographers. Of the works in this exhibition, Milsteen writes, “I am particularly drawn to abandoned spaces, rich with the remnants of common history and the quiet dignity of decay. These places simultaneously evoke the aspirations of earlier times and the sadness and surrender of loss. Photographing them lends a sense of preservation and permanence to an otherwise fleeting existence and often offers rare glimpses into places seldom seen by casual observers.”
