CELEBRATE! ANNUAL REPORT 2012-2013

GO AND MAKE DISCIPLES “Go and make disciples!” Those are words with which every believer in Jesus Christ is familiar. They were first spoken to a small band of Jesus-followers just before His ascension. They are commonly known as the Great Commission. They are simply the assignment given to every individual who claims to be a disciple...And they make perfect sense.

As most of you are aware, I am gleefully anticipating, in less than three months, holding my first grandchild. Maggie and I are so honored that God allowed us to produce new little people over 25 years ago. Those new people are now about to produce another new little person. How fun and exciting is that?!

Isn’t this the assignment of every life-form on our planet? Trees are to make trees, horses are to make horses, and people are to make people. If that were not the case where would trees, horses, and people come from? Perhaps, God could continue the process of spontaneous creation, as in the beginning of time, but He doesn’t seem interested in doing that. When He finished His work in Genesis 1, He then told all of creation to carry on and keep up the work of creation. Essentially that’s what Jesus is saying in the Great Commission. Disciples are to make disciples. If they don’t, where would disciples come from? Perhaps Jesus could make them all by Himself but He has chosen not to do that. He prefers to involve us. And what a privilege that is!

In the following pages you will read what is commonly called our Annual Report. What you will actually be reading is the story of First Baptist Wheaton disciples producing new disciples. These new disciples come in all ages, shapes and sizes. But little by little, one by one, disciples are making disciples. It’s a great story that I believe you will thoroughly enjoy reading. Perhaps it’s not as exciting as holding your grandchild for the first time but, it will be fun just the same. Happy reading!

ADMINISTRATOR HOW DOES THIS MINISTRY SEEK TO ADVANCE THE DISCIPLE-MAKING MISSION OF FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH? I am so thankful that God is in the details. As facility and personnel changes have taken place this year, it is only by God’s provision and wisdom that people have been impacted. KEY VOLUNTEERS: Volunteers: Randy Hands - IT specialist (Randy continues to seamlessly maintain and upgrade our servers and office computers). “Monday Guys”: Ron Johnson, Lee Lederhouse, Dave Mielke, Ward Rau, and John Whitmer. WHERE HAVE YOU SEEN GOD AT WORK IN THIS MINISTRY OVER THE PAST YEAR? Change is not only inevitable, it is essential in a growing ministry. As adjustments have taken place with our staffing, we have seen God orchestrate gracious transitions that are so encouraging. One example of this was after 20 years of service at First Baptist Wheaton, Tony Payne passed the baton of Director of Worship of the Blended Service over to Joe Weinzettel - what a great team effort! Since Tony has been Joe’s mentor at the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music, and here with our worship

team, it seemed like a natural transition for Joe to be the Director of Worship. We thank Tony Payne for 20 years of gracious service and pray God’s rich blessing for the future. Andrew Fuller was approached to be the Director of Communications & Technology. Andrew assumed Joe Weinzettel’s Communications responsibilities and to develop the Tech Ministry. WHAT GOALS/INITIATIVES WILL THIS MINISTRY BE PURSUING THIS NEXT YEAR? In 2014 we will begin to celebrate the 150th anniversary of First Baptist Wheaton. As we look at our aging facility, the Trustees are developing a 10-year plan to keep our campus maintained and updated. Some projects on the radar include updating the lobby, upgrading the security cameras, and maintaining the sanctuary lighting. Staff job descriptions continue to be updated: As a staff, we have worked together to build Key Result Areas (KRAs) and SMART Goals to strengthen our ministry focus. Please ask if you would like to see any of the job descriptions for our staff; they are available to the public.

ADULT MINISTRY HOW DOES THIS MINISTRY SEEK TO ADVANCE THE DISCIPLE-MAKING MISSION OF FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH? Disciple making requires some spiritual leadership in that it involves an exercise of our personal influence. Conversely, healthy spiritual leadership paves the way for effective disciple-making. In other words, disciple making and spiritual leadership are inseparable. Well-equipped spiritual leaders make for effective disciple making. That’s why we’ve focused this past year on helping new and existing leaders pursue the skills, the values, and the lifestyle necessary to be effective disciple-makers in their various leadership roles. I’m excited about the potential of our recently initiated Adult Bible Fellowship Leadership Gatherings and Small Group Leader Gatherings, through these we’re equipped and encouraged to be disciple-making leaders as we share where God is at work, rally around our common mission, and learn the skills necessary to be effective servant-leaders. LEADERSHIP TEAM AND KEY VOLUNTEERS: Nurture & Accountability Team: Jonathan Bacheller, John Carl, Dick Gove, and Kelley Robbins. Education & Training Team: Clay Anderson, Shaun Carlson, Cadmus Hicks, Jeremy Lederhouse, and Ernie Slater. College Ministry Team: Ben & Stacey Kopchick (Leaders), Wes Attaway, Dick & Marge Foster, Andrew Fuller, Natalie Lederhouse, Chi McCollum, Vern & Fran Neuhaus, Mike & Maggie Rowe, Dave & Joleen Steel, Lisa Vanderbilt, and so many other volunteers who serve food and drive students on Sunday mornings.

Women’s Ministry Team: Cindy Heslinga (Leader), Karen Anderson, Liz Hicks, Natalie Lederhouse, Maggie Rowe, Pam Sanderlin, Mavis Sanders, and Mary Whitmer. Senior’s Ministry Team: Len Tuggy (Leader), Carol Cahill, Dennis Christensen, Marge (& Dick) Foster, Joann (& Dick) Gove, Judy Ross, and Shirley Webster. Other key ministry leaders: Adult Bible Fellowship (ABF) leadership teams, Small Group leaders, Welcome Team (led by Jennifer Sharnowksi), and Men’s Ministry Team (led by Greg Lason). WHO IS THIS MINISTRY DISCIPLING? Though each adult ministry has its own niche, Together we seek to disciple adults of all ages wherever they are in their spiritual journey. WHERE HAVE YOU SEEN GOD AT WORK IN THIS MINISTRY OVER THE PAST YEAR? Our Women’s Ministry (Tapestry) continues to disciple women of all ages at First Baptist Wheaton (around 300 in number) by providing various Bible studies and events throughout the year. Tuesday Morning Tapestry (TMT) Bible study has women attending from all around the area. Some are not Christ-followers yet but continue to come weekly and ask questions. One is a Hindu woman who attends faithfully to learn more about Jesus!

PASTOR OF DISCIPLESHIP DAVID STEEL

ADULT MINISTRY CONT. Our College Ministry is thriving under the leadership of Ben & Stacey Kopchick. Their team’s “Gather, Grow, and Go” strategy is helping keep college students (as many as 200) connected to the church during the crucial years of transition. The college ministry provides for them a safe, supportive environment in which to work through their questions and issues while growing in their faith. Many students have identified the personal relationships they’ve found here as the primary reason they’ve made First Baptist Wheaton their home away from home. Several of these students are, in turn, making disciples abroad. Our Senior’s Ministry (Older Adults Still In Service) continues to enable the seniors of First Baptist Wheaton (around 80 in number) to be effective disciples of Jesus Christ by providing opportunities for fellowship, instruction, and challenge through its quarterly luncheons. Christ said, “By this all men will know you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35). This has been evident over this past year—particularly in our Small Groups, as many have demonstrated Christ’s love and generosity toward one another in significant, life-giving ways. Our Nurture and Accountability Team has been able to enhance our support of our small group leaders by assigning liaisons to each of them. We have also initiated a Field Staff Sponsorship arrangement that we expect will benefit both our missionaries and our small groups. Our Education and Training Team has been able to enhance our support of our ABFs by assigning liaisons to each ABF and collaborating with them to maintain a master teaching schedule well in advance.

A Welcome Team has been assembled to help our church become an increasingly visitor-friendly place to encounter Christ. This is already contributing to the warmth and hospitality we’re able to extend to Sunday morning worshippers. We’ve also seen God bring together a band of spiritually hungry men to prayerfully develop a more intentional Men’s Ministry at First Baptist Wheaton (stay tuned for more information). WHAT GOALS/INITIATIVES WILL THIS MINISTRY BE PURSUING THIS NEXT YEAR? Broadly speaking, we intend to: 1. Initiate a program for advanced leadership development at First Baptist Wheaton. 2. Expand our perception and practice of disciple-making community and pursue it more intentionally — particularly in small group contexts. 3. Develop practical and accessible tools to help adults who want to grow in their discipleship to Jesus. WHAT WAS THE TOTAL NUMBER OF VOLUNTEERS WHO SERVED IN YOUR MINISTRY IN 2012-2013? At least 100 volunteers are serving in some formal adult ministry role WHAT WAS THE TYPICAL NUMBER OF HOURS A VOLUNTEER WOULD SERVE PER WEEK? 1-12+ hours WHAT WAS THE TOTAL NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE THAT YOUR MINISTRY SERVED IN 2012-2013? In addition to the number cited above, about 200 adults are attending small groups. The same is true for ABFs. That’s about 40% of adult worship attendance.

YOUTH MINISTRY HOW DOES THIS MINISTRY SEEK TO ADVANCE THE DISCIPLE-MAKING MISSION OF FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH?

LEADERSHIP TEAM AND KEY VOLUNTEERS:

Youth Ministry (along with Children’s Ministry) is vital in advancing the church’s mission. We are seeking to help students confirm, deepen, and passionately practice the faith in Christ they learned from their parents and other trusted adults.

Small Group Leader/Relational Staff: Michelle Behnken, Alyssa Berding, Forest Clements, Sandy Delgado, Amy Early, Lindsay Fallt, Katy Foltz, Tom & Suzie Goering, Sam Henson, Carey Robinson, Mitch Schoen, Jorge & Katy Solis, and Katie Van Doren.

This is not always a neat process. Students struggle with sin. They have big questions about their identities. They are immersed in a teen culture that raises big questions about many pieces of faith in Christ. They are seeking a sense of community and belonging, they will find it somewhere - in the church or outside of it. Given all of these realities, we seek to walk alongside students through their journeys of middle adolescence through three specific practices. First, we seek to create Christ-centered relationships for our students to (both with peers and with older adults in the church) help them through the ups and the downs of living life for Christ during teen years. Second, our ministry provides intentional, interactive teaching designed to help students understand and wrestle with the truth-claims, stories, and practices of our faith. And finally we seek to connect the students to resources and experiences that will help build into them the habits, practices, and beliefs of a disciple of Christ. Through this three pronged strategy of Christ-centered relationships, Christ-centered teaching, and Christ-encountering experiences, we aim to help students become disciples of Jesus Christ who disciple others.

Teaching Staff: Kit Barrett, Lois Bishop, and Mitch Schoen.

WHO IS THIS MINISTRY DISCIPLING? Like most ministries, we have an “inside” and “outside” target audience. We start with the “inside” audience - the teenagers of families within our church body. We are seeking to engage those students, and then to help them reach the target “outside” audience - their friends, teammates, classmates, etc. WHERE HAVE YOU SEEN GOD AT WORK IN THIS MINISTRY OVER THE PAST YEAR? As we continue to see God work in our students, there are many things we could celebrate. Here are a couple to give some insight into our experience of God’s work: - One of our primary tasks is to “launch” students well. We have students for a very limited period of time, and then we send them out to own their faith and serve Christ on their own (often far from our ministry). This year, our current high school students took on the task of reaching out to recent graduates to support them in their first year of school.

PASTOR OF YOUTH MINISTRY AARON THOMPSON

YOUTH MINISTRY CONT. We heard back from almost all of the students we contacted. I’m thrilled to report that of the five we heard back from all had gotten connected to campus ministries and/or local churches. We (Aaron and Andrew Fuller) were also able to visit one of these students (who had come into our ministry two years ago through a friend that attends our church). During our visit, we were able to meet the student’s new campus minister. This level of “hand-off,” passing the care for a young person from a high school pastor to a campus pastor, is rare, and precious. That college freshman (at a state school) now has a pastor back home and on campus, as well as a faith community back home and on campus. This kind of networking and support is HUGE in helping students stick with their faith. It is little surprise then that recent reports back from that student include stories of leading in campus ministry, participating in URBANA, seeking out a Christian to date, and other encouraging stories. It shows the power that caring adults and real community have in the life of a young person! - One of our primary goals that I identified in the Annual Report last year was to connect well with our incoming class of seventh graders. I’m thrilled to report that, while not every seventh grader in First Baptist Wheaton regularly attends our programming, the vast majority of our incoming seventh grade class plugged into our program on Sundays and Wednesdays and have found community. In fact, the current seventh grade class is often the second biggest class at many events. Most recently, seven of them attended their first youth ministry retreat - experiencing powerful worship and deepening their community. It’s a joy to see them discover the power of small groups, and the importance of positive adults in their lives. Many of them are now thinking through what it would look like to begin to reach their friends. - Lastly, I want to highlight the way God has been at work in our leadership team. The past year has been

a time of great transition in our ministry. I am still only a year-on in this position. And in the midst of change in leadership from Jonathan Der to Mitch & Kristen Young to myself, many of the key adult leaders in the ministry moved on as well. Anchors of the ministry like Ruthe Ledbetter, Jordan Rowe, Jerrod Tillotson, Vanessa Tramm, Mitch & Kristen Young and many other dearly loved small group leaders moved on. This transition could have been one real loss where students felt abandoned and community was weakened. But we have been blessed with an incredible leadership team. We have 15 small group leaders, four teachers, and myself all working together to minister to the teens. God has provided us with some key leaders who were able to stay through the time of transition, as well as great new leaders who have enthusiastically joined the ministry. We’ve also added a new practice for our ministry. Every six weeks (approximately), one Wednesday is set aside to meet as a leadership team for prayer, team building, training, and planning. This has greatly deepened our leadership community and strengthened our ability to care for students. Flowing from this, leaders have taken on more responsibility over this transition time. Many are mentoring through one-on-one meetings and prayer. Talking with students through texting and Facebook, and even planning events and ministries that they are initiating. God has provided us with an amazing team of leaders who have helped us not just maintain during this transition, but really thrive. I’m so grateful for them, their work, and their deep commitment to see students fully embrace Christ.

YOUTH MINISTRY CONT. WHAT GOALS/INITIATIVES WILL THIS MINISTRY BE PURSUING THIS NEXT YEAR? In the year ahead we seek: - To further clarify how our ministry’s mission and strategy fits within the broader mission/vision of our church. - To transition exiting college staff with high-quality, passionate college students ready to minister to our teens. - To prayerfully consider how we can best minister to high school and middle school students, meeting each group where they are developmentally. - To provide another year of deep relationships, intentional teaching, and purposeful experiences in order to help our teens develop as disciples who disciple others. WHAT WAS THE TOTAL NUMBER OF VOLUNTEERS WHO SERVED IN YOUR MINISTRY IN 2012-2013? We have 19 consistent volunteers. Parents volunteered in one-off capacities for several student events. WHAT WAS THE TYPICAL NUMBER OF HOURS A VOLUNTEER WOULD SERVE PER WEEK? 2-5 hours WHAT WAS THE TOTAL NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE THAT YOUR MINISTRY SERVED IN 2012-2013? 70 students (counting students who regularly participated in at least one of our programs for more than 2 months)

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS D-NOW FALL RETREAT Volunteers - 15 // Students - 30 This event kicked-off our small groups for the year. Out of this event, we saw many of our small groups (who had spent the weekend together) deepening in their friendships. One of my favorite outcomes of the event was seeing a friendship emerge between two of our students. Prior to the event, they were not friendly at all. Now the students say, “We used to hate each other. But now we’re like sisters!” This transformation began during D-NOW. Other students reported connecting more with the leader, feeling challenged to engage more with Scripture, and having a stronger desire to serve God. CAUSE RETREAT TO BARABOO, WISCONSIN Volunteers - 8 // Students - 25 Quotes: “Some important things that stood out to me: ‘Things of this world are temporary’ and ‘what are you trying to prove?’ I believe that my identity is found in Christ alone and I will work my hardest to live and be an example of Christ in whatever God has in store for me. (:” Paraphrase from a high school boy: “I felt the presence of God in worship in a way that I never have before.” “Sore back; bruised legs; scratched arms; no voice; amazing food; icy rocks; muddy paths; playing cards; no sleep; bunk beds; not enough hands to carry all my bags; bus rides; family time; but most importantly, reconnecting and learning and following my God. He makes all things work together for my good, and your good, when you choose to give it all to Him; and stand with arms high and heart abandoned - He is good when there’s nothing good in me.”

YOUTH MINISTRY CONT. WAVE RETREAT Volunteers - 4 // Students - 13 Some things we saw on this retreat: - Students recognized (and said out loud) that there was a difference between how they lived with church-folks and how they were at school. Several talked about relying on the Spirit to live more passionately for God in day-to-day life. - For many, this was their first weekend away with other teens. This meant a lot of fun, but also some conflict. Helping students understand life in community, and the Jesus-way of handling conflict was challenging, but rewarding. - We came away seeing many of our middle school students who walked in as near-strangers walked as friends. ANY OTHER COMMENTS OR EXCITING THINGS YOU’D LIKE TO REPORT? It has been a great blessing for my family and I to be at First Baptist Wheaton for a little over a year now. We have been afforded the opportunity to minister and serve. And we are so grateful for the way that the church has ministered to us. Thank you for a wonderful year. We are greatly anticipating the one ahead.

CHILDREN'S MINISTRY HOW DOES THIS MINISTRY SEEK TO ADVANCE THE DISCIPLE-MAKING MISSION OF FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH? Children’s Ministry seeks to advance the disciple-making mission for First Baptist Wheaton by equipping ministry teams to partner with parents to encourage Christian faith development in children infant – grade 6. LEADERSHIP TEAM AND KEY VOLUNTEERS: Awana: Jonathan Edwards, Don Erickson, Craig & Paula Gray, Lori Lane and Ami Patel. Edge: Jonathan Edwards & Jaymie Edwards, Jeremy Lederhouse, and Amy Soehren. Elementary: Kathleen Cruse, Doug Ehorn, Amy Erickson, Val Gillespie, Cindy Hoidas, and Shirley Webster. Preschool: Josh Bacheller, Evonne Cruz, Perry Gillespie, Gloria Hofmann, Katie Johnson, Elizabeth Loewer, Brian McCollum, Lee & Leticia McCoy, Cory & Deb Soehren, and Esther Waldrop. Nursery: Michelle Bartlett, Ronda Carl, Lori Lane, Carol Mielke, Hart Slager, Anne Thompson and Sue Williams. VBS: Paula Gray, Lori Lane, Jami Lason, Jon Lederhouse and Joe Weinzettel. WHO IS THIS MINISTRY DISCIPLING? Children infant – grade 6 and the volunteer teams that minister to them.

WHERE HAVE YOU SEEN GOD AT WORK IN THIS MINISTRY OVER THE PAST YEAR? This year our focus has been to transition to a team-based approach in Children’s Ministry. We implemented Orange, a curriculum strategy that was designed for this, and divided responsibilities. This allowed individuals to serve within their gifting and availability. As a result, we were able to deliver 18 weekly programs, 4 family nights, and a full week of Vacation Bible School with 35% fewer volunteers than needed under the previous approach. An added benefit is that, although 17% of our teams are made up of Wheaton College students, there is significantly less stress on the program during college breaks. Currently Children’s Ministry is 90% staffed and our children are benefiting from being discipled by consistent and committed leaders at all age levels. This consistency has resulted in a steady and increasing attendance. The majority of children are attending both the education and worship hours on Sunday morning. Awana has also experienced significant growth increasing to a total of 167 children this year (108 of them do not attend First Baptist Wheaton on Sunday mornings). This year we added an additional Cubbies classroom we were able to accept registrations throughout the year for all children. We also had several family events that successfully encouraged families to participate together.

CHILDREN'S MINISTRY CONT. WHAT GOALS/INITIATIVES WILL THIS MINISTRY BE PURSUING THIS NEXT YEAR?

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

Now that our teams are in place our focus this year will be directed at content and training. We will take a closer look at the curriculum we are using. From we will build a tailored strategy that meets the unique needs of Children’s Ministry at First Baptist Wheaton. - Implementation of an intentional plan to equip, train and build our children’s ministry teams. - Design a class only for 2-year-olds. This will allow children to move up as they become socially and mentally ready. It will also provide a more gentle transition to the structure they will experience when they move on to the preschool program. - Adjust the kindergarten curriculum so it challenges without frustrating our kindergarteners. - Further distinguish the role of the 9:45am hour as a small community where kids can experience significant growth in their relationships with each other and with God. The 8:30/11:00am hour is a worship service in a heart language of children. - Pilot a leadership program for our fifth and sixth graders. The design will allow them to experience the joy of discovering and using their gifts while serving together, blessing others out of the overflow of what God is teaching them, and establishing the foundation for them to be active participants in the life of the broader church.

At First Baptist Wheaton, families are important and a high value is placed on creating experiences for families to do together. So, on December 2, 2012 we took time out from our regular Awana schedule and invited church families, Toddlers Campus, Awana, and Wheaton Square Apartment families to our annual Family Christmas Celebration. The evening kicked off with a scavenger hunt that took over 270 people to every corner of our building. They were guided and participated in activities along the way. We concluded the evening together by singing Christmas Carols, laughing and hearing the amazing story of how Jesus - the greatest gift of all - was born. I’m not sure who had more fun, those serving at the event or those participating. It was an awesome night!

FAMILY CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION

Quotes: “The best part for me was sitting next to a refugee family. Whose mother was whispering and translating the Christmas story into their native Burmese language for her children.” - Don Erickson, T&T Boys Director “It was definitely an action-packed evening.” - Evonne Cruz, mom who attended with her kids ZAPPED VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL Volunteers - 75 // Children - 118 This was a phenomenal, high-energy week in June where kids discovered that plugging into God’s power changes the way we should think, the way we should treat others, and the choices we should make. The week was made possible through the teamwork of 75 volunteers who used their talents to decorate, register, feed, build relationships, lead worship, teach, and play games with the 108 kids who attended. 18 of them were from the Wheaton Square Apartments. The kids raised $604.16 via the VBS offering for Toddlers Campus Scholarships.

CHILDREN'S MINISTRY CONT. Quotes: “The best thing about the week was the joy of worship music and dancing with energetic kids!” - Volunteer “Did Jesus really die for everyone?” one girl asked of her small group leader, after the gospel message was shared. WE BELIEVE We obviously talk often about who Jesus is and what He did for us in Children’s Ministry, but when it comes to talking to a child about making a decision to trust Christ, we want the parents involved in the conversation. So on February 17, 2013, 23 families joined Children’s Church. Together they heard large group leader, Jeremy Lederhouse, deliver a great salvation message taken directly from John 3:16. The same message was delivered in March by Jonathan Edwards on three Sunday nights to 60 Awana Sparks. As a result, four children were baptized on Sunday, April 14, and five children accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Quote: “Thank you for allowing me to serve at First Baptist Wheaton! This is what it is all about!” - Jonathan Edwards

TODDLERS CAMPUS HOW DOES THIS MINISTRY SEEK TO ADVANCE THE DISCIPLE-MAKING MISSION OF FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH? We at Toddlers Campus consider it a privilege to have a part in the mission of discipling children and their families. Each day during the school year, we teach preschool-aged children the foundations of biblical instruction. This year our preschool has an enrollment of 180 students from Wheaton and the surrounding communities. Many of our children come from families with no faith background. Through our teaching of biblical truths and lovingly nurturing each child, we trust that they will desire to put their faith in Christ. These truths are also shared with the parents through our staff interactions, Toddlers Campus publications, the monthly Bible memory verses, their times in the classroom, and the children bringing home what they are learning. We trust God to bring His Word alive to our children and to their families. May God allow the foundation laid during these preschool years to remain with each one. LEADERSHIP TEAM AND KEY VOLUNTEERS: Teachers and Assistant Teachers: Ronda Carl, Linda Chase, Janna Jacobs, Sheila Johnson, Sharon Lewandowski, Paula Poke, Marlene Rau, Joy Ritter, Julie Spangler, Laura Swoboda, and Pat Tillotson. Financial Managers: Jackie Snyder and Sandy Dede. Communications Assistant: Christine DeFalco. Toddlers Campus Committee: Karen Taylor (Chairman), Amy Soehren (Secretary), Chris Fawkes, Lori Lane, Fran Neuhaus, Jeannine O’Dell and Sandy Dede (Trustee Representative).

WHO IS THIS MINISTRY DISCIPLING? Preschool children from Wheaton and the surrounding communities and their families. WHERE HAVE YOU SEEN GOD AT WORK IN THIS MINISTRY OVER THE PAST YEAR? This year we implemented an all-school monthly Bible memory verse program. At the beginning of each month, the new Bible verse is presented with motions to the class. They talk about the meaning of the verse and remind them that all of God’s words are true. Each day the children recite the verse together. Some of the classes are reciting all of the verses that they have learned during the year. The parents are also getting a copy of the verse each month, and it has been encouraging to hear from the parents that some families are using the verse at home as well. We are thankful that God’s Word is going home into the hearts of the Toddlers Campus children and into their homes to make disciples of Jesus Christ. Another way we have seen God at work in Toddlers Campus this year is through the provision of scholarship funds through our community of First Baptist Wheaton. Our ten children that attend Toddlers Campus from the Wheaton Square Apartments are benefitting from your generosity and are feeling so at home here at First Baptist Wheaton. Their English language skills have grown immensely and when they leave our school, they will all be confident and ready to begin kindergarten in the public school.

DIRECTOR OF TODDLERS CAMPUS KATHY SONESON

TODDLERS CAMPUS CONT. There are many other ways we have seen God at work here at Toddlers Campus, so feel free to ask me or any of the staff. WHAT GOALS/INITIATIVES WILL THIS MINISTRY BE PURSUING THIS NEXT YEAR? 1. Looking into possible upgrades of the classrooms. 2. Working to continually make improvements to our curriculum and staff training. 3. Investigating other potential “extra-curricular” offerings, in addition to our Victory Sports program. Thank you, also, to the former directors (that I know) Carol Cahill and Joann Gove and for all the former and current staff that have made Toddlers Campus a wonderful neighborhood preschool, providing quality education for young children for almost 40 years.

WORSHIP MINISTRY HOW DOES THIS MINISTRY SEEK TO ADVANCE THE DISCIPLE-MAKING MISSION OF FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH? The Worship Ministry advances our disciple-making vision by prayerfully planning weekly worship gatherings that reveal and respond to God’s character and works in the heart languages of yesterday and today. Regularly seeking and celebrating God together reminds us of why Jesus is worth following in every aspect of our lives. It also helps ensure our personal and church identity is centered on His life, death, resurrection and ascension. LEADERSHIP TEAM AND KEY VOLUNTEERS: Staff: Mike Rowe, Joe Weinzettel, Andrew Fuller, Dave Steel, Aaron Thompson, and formerly Tony Payne.

WHERE HAVE YOU SEEN GOD AT WORK IN THIS MINISTRY OVER THE PAST YEAR? God’s grace has been especially evident to me the last several months through transition of worship staff. As is expected with any big change, there have been challenges along the way, but strong character, graciousness, love, and the other fruits of the Spirit have sustained and empowered us to continue thriving in our service to glorify God together. WHAT GOALS/INITIATIVES WILL THIS MINISTRY BE PURSUING THIS NEXT YEAR? We desire to prayerfully plan and lead worship gatherings that reveal and respond to God’s character and works in the heart languages of yesterday and today.

COMMUNICATIONS & TECH MINISTRY HOW DOES THIS MINISTRY SEEK TO ADVANCE THE DISCIPLE-MAKING MISSION OF FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH? The Communications & Tech Ministry exists to communicate the disciple-making mission through modern media resources that bring people into an environment where they can be equipped to grow and serve with others. We believe that in order to communicate effectively to our congregation, we must continue to adapt to reach them using input methods they already use daily – which means using many avenues to connect our mission to their hearts. LEADERSHIP TEAM AND KEY VOLUNTEERS: Communications Team: Lori Atkins, Dan DuPree, and Gloria Hofmann. Tech Team: Mark Cruse, Chris Dede, Jacob DuPree, David Fisher, Diane Greenberg, Randy Hands, Sarah Kenny, Dmitry Romanovich, and David Querfeld. Office/Communications Volunteers: Marija Birchard, Margaret Burau, Margaret Canon, Carol Cahill, Evelyn Chaddock, Mary Chase, Montene Foss, George Hofmann, Peg Hopeman, Jean Jackson, Lori Lane, Margaret Nendick, Judy Ross, Eunice Wallem, Ella Wells, and Ed Wittekind.

our library resources and all the other things you do so humbly! Nik Romanovich for working with us to create our banners and signs with such a gracious attitude! Tim Selander for the countless hours of mentoring and work done to further our video capabilities! Larry Tomko for bridging the gap in the Blended Service between the Worship and Tech Teams, and making sure that what we put on the screen is perfect! Eunice Wallem for typing and organizing our attendance rosters each week so we can invite new people into our church family! Jim & Mary Whitmer for providing us with so many wonderful pictures for us to use and share with our congregation! Jake Barlow, Keith Hands, Rich Kolton, Kyle Reu, Dave Robbins, Vadim Romanovich, and Larry Taylor for the time you’ve spent helping us with our tech needs! WHO IS THIS MINISTRY DISCIPLING? We help support the discipling and equipping of our congregation, but we are also intentionally focused on discipling and mentoring each other. Our teams are largely intergenerational, which is such a great characteristic because disciple-making happens as we serve together!

We would like to give special thanks to: Carol Cahill for all the many times we’ve needed you to fill in at the front desk! Margaret Canon for her diligent and faithful dedication to proofing our mistakes, and making sure our publications aren’t a mess! Lori Lane for constantly working with us to improve

WHAT GOALS/INITIATIVES WILL THIS MINISTRY BE PURSUING THIS NEXT YEAR?

One of the great ways that God has been working in this ministry has been the strategic focus and intentionality towards people:

Because our focus has shifted towards people and discipleship, our goals over the next year include:

As a team, we’ve begun to focus away from the product and being placing our relationships with God and each other as our highest value. In doing so, our planning, teamwork, communication with each other - and ultimately our final product as well - have all started improving. You may have been noticing some of the changes around First Baptist Wheaton (i.e. video segments during worship services, better signage around the building, more online resources and a renovated website, streamlined publications, modern interactivity such as live texting responses during services, etc.) as a testament to our constant improvement and growth as a team. We have also begun to think about how we can disciple each other while serving, and we have started attracting younger people looking for intentional mentorship as a result. In fact, this year we even brought two brothers on as interns (Dan and Jacob DuPree) in order to help them grow in their experiential capabilities, but also in their spiritual walk. I’m so glad that our team is beginning to grow and work - not just as individuals, but together especially with the transitions that have happened in the Worship Services. We’ve still got a long road to travel, and my leadership is still less than six months old, but we’re on a good path of praying, listening, and discerning the Holy Spirit’s direction for our ministry.

- Continuing to improve on our Tech Team’s discernment and decision-making process by forming monthly team lunch meetings, as well as a Tech Ministry Leadership Team. - Evaluating our congregational media needs and daily input methods in order to better equip, challenge, and impact them with the disciple-making mission during Sunday mornings and throughout the week. - Beginning to form methods to recruit more servant-leaders from our congregation and community to equip, train, and mentor them to use media talents to further God’s kingdom. GLOBAL OUTREACH HOW DOES THIS MINISTRY SEEK TO ADVANCE THE DISCIPLE-MAKING MISSION OF FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH? Through the mission ministry of First Baptist Wheaton there are field staff serving throughout the world and through them disciples are being made. Our purpose is to fulfill the Great Commission by allowing people of the nations where our staff are working to experience the saving knowledge of Christ and disciple them in growth in Christ. LEADERSHIP TEAM AND KEY VOLUNTEERS: Missions Committee: Lara Bell (Chair), Patricia Christensen, Doug Ehorn, Kent Johnson, Ted Koch, Pete Sanderlin, Coral Sheppard, Steve Soneson, Jonathan Bacheller (Deacon Representative), and Shirley Webster (Missions Liaison). WHERE HAVE YOU SEEN GOD AT WORK IN THIS MINISTRY OVER THE PAST YEAR? Short Term Trip to Spain During the last week of June and first week of July a team of nine were in Osuna, Spain ministering in an English camp with our field staff John and Sandy Niemeyer. This camp was to help our missionaries build relationships with the local people. several field staff highlights In Muvuno Village, Tanzania, Dan & Bethany Tanner are being a light in the darkness. They are placing vulnerable and abandoned children in Christ-centered homes. The purpose is to show them Christ’s love with the hope that they too will come to a saving faith in the Lord Jesus and be His disciples.

Through the work of Dan & Esther Penney, a group of women received certificates for completing a course called “Formation Lois.” Over a two-year period, these women, who come from unique circumstances, have been taught “how to teach the Bible chronologically for oral hearers”, “how to learn their identity in Christ along with spiritual growth,” and several other topics. Our primary event of the year, the Global Impact Celebration, was held from January 25 - February 3 with the theme “Light in the Darkness.” We began with 250 people who enjoyed a Hawaiian luau-themed meal. The program featured letters from our field staff. The two Sunday service speakers were Steve Dresselhaus and John Waldrop. The combined ABF classes on the first Sunday featured Alex Jones, who had just returned from serving six months in a poverty area in an Asian country. Ben Bacheller also informed us about the work in Brazil. The second Sunday, Ward Rau told about his trips to various fields to assist with their building needs. Finally, Mike Rowe shared about his trip to visit our field staff in the eastern part of the US. On Thursday evening, Esther taught the women about the work in Prague, Czech Republic. They enjoyed “honey cakes” (an Eastern Europe specialty). Saturday morning, at breakfast Tim Selander shared with the men about the work in Japan. The congregation generously gave to the Operation Impact offering of which $16,197 was designated for global outeach purposes. The amount of $8,125 was for Field Staff Love Gifts, which have been distributed to 30 missionary units and eight

approved units waiting for support. A second category was Field Staff Flood Relief in the amount of $8,072 that has been distributed for flood relief work in Chad, Senegal and the Philippines. During the year a total of $8,550 additional funds were disbursed from our Mission Reserve Account for needs approved by the committee. A $10,000 gift was given to the Mission Reserve Account as a bequeath from a will. WHAT GOALS/INITIATIVES WILL THIS MINISTRY BE PURSUING THIS NEXT YEAR? During the coming year with the additional funds granted by the Trustees we look forward to taking on partial support for three units that have been approved by the committee - prior to this they have only been supported by our prayers. Plans are being made for the next Global Impact Celebration to be held the last week of January 2014. Through this conference, other missionary speakers, the field staff highlight in the Weekly, prayer for our field staff in the morning services, and updated prayer letters found in the letter rack, our goal is to encourage the congregation in awareness and participation in ministry.

LOCAL OUTREACH Being a disciple of Jesus means following Jesus’ commandment to love our neighbor as ourselves. The Outreach Team prayerfully seeks to practically equip First Baptist Wheaton to proclaim and to live the gospel in our communities. As a church, we are exploring ways to be light and salt in our community. Next door to First Baptist Wheaton’s building, Wheaton Square Apartments are home to many immigrant families. Through homework and soccer clubs for children at the apartments, volunteers tutor and interact with children - learning about their cultures in the process. We continue to offer the community garden for Wheaton Square residents. There are still challenges: occasional vegetable theft and the language barrier makes backyard fence-conversation difficult. Some preschoolers from Wheaton Square attend Toddlers Campus. A few also ventured to join a Monday morning play group in the church gym with First Baptist Wheaton moms. Three individuals from First Baptist Wheaton live at Wheaton Square. By simply sharing life with their neighbors, they have opportunities to partner with immigrant Christians and share the Gospel with those who do not yet know Him. They

help challenge the rest of us to reach our neighbors. We want to serve in our communities in a way that is in line with God’s heart and His calling for His people. Recently, the Venture ABF explored some of the biblical and theological foundations for helping the most vulnerable in our society. Thanks to Venture and other faithful volunteers, World Relief classes are taking place once again, with citizenship classes being offered on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Please pray for hearts at First Baptist Wheaton to be set afire with practical ways we can grow in our love for our neighbors. As a church, we are exploring further partnership with Hawthorne Elementary School. We have had a positive response from the principal and teachers who are encouraged that we want to support the important work they are doing. We also want to encourage each member of First Baptist Wheaton to grow in their opportunities to love and serve. Please see the recently published Catalog of Outreach and Service Opportunities for more ideas for you, your small group, and family to explore what it may mean for you to love your neighbor with the love of Jesus.

EXECUTIVE BOARD HOW DOES THIS MINISTRY SEEK TO ADVANCE THE DISCIPLE-MAKING MISSION OF FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH? The Executive Board provides coordination between Mike Rowe, the ministerial staff and the lay leadership team of the church. They do this by encouraging, promoting, and supporting the mission of First Baptist Wheaton in church life and policy administered by the boards and committees of the church. LEADERSHIP TEAM AND KEY VOLUNTEERS: Chair: David Heslinga. Deacons: Clay Anderson (Chair), Andy Howard, Cadmus Hicks, and Ward Rau. Trustees: Steve Trussell (Chair), Cory Soehren, Larry Taylor, and John Whitmer. Deaconess: Carol Cahill (Chair). Missions: Lara Bell (Chairwoman). Clerk: Megan Ottermat. Staff: Mike Rowe (Senior Pastor), and Carol Novak (Church Administrator). WHO IS THIS MINISTRY DISCIPLING? Though the Executive Board does not directly disciple others, the Board facilitates disciple-making by hiring needed ministerial and office staff. And through providing budget and policy recommendations to the church membership. This leadership role provides the resources needed for our church body to be disciples of Jesus Christ who disciple others both within our community, country, and around the world. WHERE HAVE YOU SEEN GOD AT WORK IN THIS MINISTRY OVER THE PAST YEAR? The Executive Board worked in cooperation with Pastor Mike Rowe in supporting his recommendation to reorganize ministerial responsibilities between himself and Pastor Dave Steel. Significant other staffing decisions were made throughout the course of the year. Lori Atkins was approved as our permanent Office Manager

and part-time Director of Children’s Ministry; Joe Weinzettel as Director of Worship; Andrew Fuller as Director of Communications & Technology; Jackie Snyder as Finance Manager; Dan DuPree as Communications Assistant. WHAT GOALS/INITIATIVES WILL THIS MINISTRY BE PURSUING THIS NEXT YEAR? The Executive Board recommended to the church membership, at the Annual Business Meeting, that Dave Steel be hired in a full-time role as Pastor of Discipleship & Leadership Development. His leadership of the range of Adult Ministry in small groups, Adult Bible Fellowships, and Women’s Ministry, as well as his oversight of Youth and Children’s Ministry will further the development and training of these ministries as they strive to encourage and build-up the church in being disciples of Jesus Christ. ANY OTHER COMMENTS OR EXCITING THINGS YOU’D LIKE TO REPORT?

During the past year, it has been a privilege and honor to serve as leaders of the boards and committees of First Baptist Wheaton. We are so appreciative of the servant leadership provided by Pastor Mike Rowe and the ministerial and office staffs. Their commitment and dedication to their respective responsibilities makes all the difference in how effectively our church functions as the body of Christ in Wheaton. We look forward to seeing what God will do through each one who is a part of First Baptist Wheaton.

DEACON BOARD HOW DOES THIS MINISTRY SEEK TO ADVANCE THE DISCIPLE-MAKING MISSION OF FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH? The Deacon Board seeks to guide the mission of First Baptist Wheaton and to serve the members of First Baptist Wheaton. We do this by supporting the pastoral staff in their efforts to advance our mission and to meet the spiritual needs of our congregation, by seeking to prayerfully discern God’s purposes for First Baptist Wheaton, by providing encouragement and financial support to members of our family in times of need, and in some cases by providing hands-on leadership in various ministry areas. LEADERSHIP TEAM AND KEY VOLUNTEERS: Chair: Clay Anderson. Nurture & Accountability: Jonathan Bacheller and Dick Gove. Celebration & Proclamation: Paul Erickson, Andy Howard, and Ben Kopchick. focus. It is only inasmuch as we are living in the presence of God that we are able to serve and to lead with effectiveness. Pray for each of us, and ask that God would guard our hearts, give us vision, and ignite our passion for His church. WHERE HAVE YOU SEEN GOD AT WORK IN THIS MINISTRY OVER THE PAST YEAR? Everywhere. First Baptist Wheaton is in an excellent season of ministry. We have an incredible staff, a clarity of mission, and a unity in the Spirit that is becoming increasingly evident in our ministry efforts. WHAT GOALS/INITIATIVES WILL THIS MINISTRY BE PURSUING THIS NEXT YEAR? Our primary hope is to see us transform into a vibrant community of prayer in the coming years. Thankfully, we already are individuals of prayer: many of you are faithful and fervent. Now, as we pursue His commission to disciple the world in which we live, it is time for us to come together, to seek God’s will, mercy, and blessing. Our earnest prayer is that nothing short of revival would visit First Baptist Wheaton. Pray with us to that end! WHAT WAS THE TOTAL NUMBER OF VOLUNTEERS WHO SERVED IN YOUR MINISTRY IN 2012-2013?

In one sense, the deacons are only indirectly doing the work of discipling: we’re seeking to facilitate the work of discipleship as it is carried out by each of you - the members of First Baptist Church.

12

But in another sense, we are very much seeking to disciple each other as well as the First Baptist Wheaton leaders with whom we interact. As much as it is our role to discuss and make decisions, it is far more important that we seek to sharpen each other, to encourage prayerfulness, and to maintain

DEACONESS COMMITTEE HOW DOES THIS MINISTRY SEEK TO ADVANCE THE DISCIPLE-MAKING MISSION OF FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH? The purpose of the Deaconess Committee is to pray, care for and to come alongside the Adult Bible Fellowships and Small Groups in meeting the various needs of the congregation. The deaconesses also prepare and set up communion and assist with baptism. LEADERSHIP TEAM AND KEY VOLUNTEERS: Chairwoman: Carol Cahill. Chair of Visitation: Julie Ehorn. Chair of Baptism: Cindy Hoidas. Chair of Flowers: Sheila Johnson. Chair of Communion: Carol Mielke. Secretary: Deb Soehren. Peggy Amendt, Montene Foss, Joann Gove, Liz Olson, Eunice Wallem, and Ella Wells. WHO IS THIS MINISTRY DISCIPLING? Deaconesses aid in the discipling process. The communion preparation enables the congregation to partake and remember Christ’s sacrifice. Helping with baptism allows those being baptized to follow in Christ’s footsteps. Meeting the needs of the congregation shows Christ’s love then, they can pass it on and can be a witness to others. WHERE HAVE YOU SEEN GOD AT WORK IN THIS MINISTRY OVER THE PAST YEAR? The deaconesses are a very service-oriented organization. We have assisted in one baptism and monthly communion services. We provided and served funeral meals for the Wittekind, Araujo, and Romanenko families. At Christmas, we baked, packed, and delivered cookies to the shut-ins, the elderly, and those recently bereaved. We also provided flowers and plants for funerals, hospital visits, and shut-ins. God particularly was at work in the lives of the people for which we prayed. Our meetings consisted of a small amount of business and the rest spent in prayer and writing notes to

those who were facing surgery or other health issues, tough situations in there lives, and shut-ins. We wanted them to know that they were being prayed for and not forgotten. And also to offer a word of encouragement in whatever they were facing. It was also a blessing as we visited people. We went to bless them, and we in turn, ended up being blessed by their testimonies and love for God. It was great to see how God answers prayer! WHAT WAS THE TOTAL NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE THAT YOUR MINISTRY SERVED IN 2012-2013? We served 18 elderly and shut-ins with cookies and visits and met the other needs of the congregation as needed

FELLOWSHIP COMMITTEE The Fellowship Committee ministry is to serve the church body. Hopefully by our service to others; this will be a blessing to them. Hopefully this might spur them on then they would feel compelled to serve. We don’t have a target group that we are trying to disciple. The committee has met a couple of times a year to plan the bigger dinner events. The amount of time put in for service is usually several hours at each business meeting with the dinner business meeting requiring more time. For a dinner business meeting we divide and conquer the amount of work to be done. Someone usually shops for the supplies, a group sets up and decorates the tables and another group cleans up afterwards. Team: Cathy Johnson (Chair), Emy Bacheller, Ruth Bacheller, Loretta Birchard, Ronda Carl, Linda Carlson, Marie Doty, Natalie Lederhouse, Debbie Perdue, Judy Ross, and Sharon Wright.
