About annual reviews/Journal impact factor rankings About Annual Reviews Annual Reviews was founded in 1932 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing the most comprehensive and affordable scientific review literature to its readers. Annual Reviews journals operate as a high quality filter, prioritizing and synthesizing the primary research literature in more than 40 different disciplines for the Biomedical, Life, Physical, and Social Sciences, including Economics. Via comprehensive review articles written by leading scholars, Annual Reviews serves scientists, researchers and students around the world by navigating the vast amount of primary research literature that is available to them. All topics for review are selected by editorial committees comprised of the most distinguished scholars of their discipline, and each article is written by authors who are invited by the editorial committees. As a result, each article is its own search engine, providing a pathway to the essential primary research literature referenced within each topic. Annual Reviews Offers : • Editors and Authors who are premier contributors to their fields • Journals that consistently earn the highest Thomson Reuters Journal Citation Reports (JCR®) Rankings • Innovative and enhanced online and mobile content that includes fully supplemented and searchable full-text articles and PDFs; Reviews In Advance (RIA); and links to all participating CrossRef publications, Medline® and Web of Science® Online Discovery of Annual Reviews Content Annual Reviews is committed to ensuring that the investment you've made in journal content will be discoverable in as many ways as possible. Content can be found in many popular Abstracting and Indexing (A&I) databases, including the Web of Science® (Thomson Reuters), MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Chemical Abstracts Service®, SSRN, and more. Annual Reviews has also partnered with the major discovery services to provide content for pre-indexing in their databases, including Summon™, EBSCO Discovery Service™, and Primo Central (ExLibris). A&I inclusion varies for each journal. Please contact [email protected] for more information about database participation and title inclusion, or visit www.annualreviews.org/metadata. Journal Impact Factors Annual Reviews journals consistently earn the highest Impact Factors according to the Thomson Reuters Journal Citation Reports (JCR®). The JCR® ranks over 10,000 journals by Impact Factor, which is based upon the number of times an average article is cited. Annual Reviews publishes the following journals. Their Journal Impact Factor (for the year 2011) follows in parentheses. Biomedical/Life Sciences

The Role of review articles in Alleviating information overload the Review Article: Delivering a Filtered Synthesis of Essential Primary Research What is a Review Article? Review articles critically examine and qualify the wide array of primary research material published and available to the scientific community on a chosen topic. Review articles survey primary research — including books, articles, and other sources — relevant to a particular area of inquiry or research to summarize and evaluate each important idea and finding. Annual Reviews, a dynamic collection of review articles across the spectrum of biomedical, life, physical, and social sciences, provides researchers with the definitive resource of past and present research on a given topic. Why is a Review Article Useful? A review article provides an objective overview of a field of scientific study and takes into account existing primary research on a subject or theory within a discipline. By evaluating prior scholarship, a review can prevent future duplication of research effort; by addressing conflicting studies, it can suggest effective new research directions. Review articles provide systematic, periodic examinations of scholarly advances in a given discipline. The comprehensive critical review not only summarizes a topic but also roots out errors of fact or concept and provokes discussion that will lead to new research activity. The critical review is an essential part of the scientific method. A review article is the ideal starting point when faced with researching and evaluating a new trend or ongoing query in a field of interest or for an investigation of unfamiliar research territory. Each article provides a gateway to the vital and relevant primary research literature referenced within a topic. More intelligently than any search engine, a review’s expert author has found and interpreted the most significant papers on the topic in question. Does a Review Article Present Primary Research? No. A review article surveys and evaluates existing primary literature and presents a synopsis. Who Writes Review Articles For Annual Reviews? Distinguished authors and editors critically review, synthesize, and filter the vast and rapidly growing body of primary research in a specific discipline. They guide researchers to the principal contributions of the field and ultimately help them to keep up to date in their area of research, saving them time and effort. How Relevant Are Annual Reviews Review Articles? Historically Annual Reviews’ articles have had a significantly longer usage life than articles in the primary literature. Annual Reviews publications are ranked among the highest by impact factor of the publications assessed and indexed by the Thomson Reuters Journal Citation Reports (JCR ® ).

To learn more about the role of the critical review article in alleviating information overload, download the Annual Reviews White Paper in the Librarian Resource Center. It includes survey results from early-career researchers examining their approach to academic literature, and one-on-one interviews with a variety of prestigious scientists.

Visit http://www.annualreviews.org/action/institutionAdmin and click ‘Register Now’ to register as administrator for your site. 3. Complete the registration form, selecting an administrator username and password. After submitting the form you will be directed to the administrator homepage. After reading and accepting our online activation agreement, enter your activation token on the page. 4. When this has been submitted, please click the ‘Enter or Modify your IP Address’ link to enter your IP addresses to complete the activation process. Upon renewal, access is continuous and customers do not need to activate the account each year unless a change in vendor is made. For each paid subscription, IP addresses within one contiguous campus are eligible for online access unless you have signed a multi-location site license agreement. If you would like additional geographic locations to have access, please purchase an online subscription for that location or contact us regarding a multi-location license. Once you have entered the IP addresses for your site, your users will have seamless access to Annual Reviews online via http://www.annualreviews.org. To administer your account in the future, simply log in. Should you require additional assistance, please contact our Online Activation team via email at: [email protected]. Vendors : If we do not ship directly to your customer, you must contact Annual Reviews to arrange online access for your customer and provide us with the end user’s account information. Customers should activate their own accounts. They are required to set up a username/password for the account administrator on their campus.
