A New Ecclesiastical Year On September 1st we welcome a New Ecclesiastical Year. It may seem odd that the Church begins the year in September, but it was on this day that Jesus proclaimed salvation to the world for the first time! On this day, we read in the church what Jesus read to the people as He began His ministry. Having been baptized by John, and being led by the Spirit into the wilderness, Jesus returned to Nazareth and on the Sabbath announced: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD" (Luke 4:18-19). After reading this, Christ tells us: "Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing" (v.21). This passage is a direct quote from Isaiah 61:1-2, and by quoting it, Jesus is announcing that salvation has come into the world. As the Church begins a new year, let us be renewed in our faith and in our commitment to Christ! Something to look out for in the new year … a Welcome Packet for guests and visitors to our Parish and campus. This packet will come in a beautiful folder containing a welcome letter, a visitor information card, and a brochure with all our ministries listed. We have always been a welcoming community, and now guests will have something tangible to take with them. On a sad note, Presvytera Bess (Vasiliki) Vieron passed from this life on the evening of Wednesday, August 29th. The ministry of a presvytera is often unseen as they care for the home and raise the children while their husband ministers to the parish. For almost 70 years, Presvytera Bess offered this ministry, and the impact she had, especially in Memphis, cannot be quantified. May her memory be eternal! As we say goodbye to one loved one, we prepare to welcome another loved one. On behalf of Presvytera Stephanie and our children, thank you from the bottom of my heart for the outpouring of love you showered us with at the Baby Shower for Baby CPT. We eagerly await his arrival, and know that you too share in our joy. God bless you all for your support. With Love in Christ,

Rev. Father Simon Thomas Parish Priest

[Christianity] thinks God made the world … But it also thinks that a great many things have gone wrong with the world that God made and that God insists, and insists very loudly, on our putting them right again. -C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

President’s Message September 2017 Happy New Year. Yes, it is a new ecclesiastical year in the life of the church. I would like to take a moment to thank several individuals; First, Emily Love and Tina Liollio for their insight and desire to host a lovely event in honor of the Theotokos. What an evening it was. The atmosphere and food were fantastic. The speaker, Arlene Siavelis Kehl, gave a very inspiring talk that included a letter to God from a woman struggling with cancer. I hope that you will consider doing this again for us all to enjoy,

The Nativity of our Most Holy Lady, the Theotokos September 8th The Most Holy Virgin Mary was born at a time when people had reached such a degree of moral decay that it seemed altogether impossible to restore them. People often said that God must come into the world to restore faith and not permit the ruin of mankind. The Most Holy Virgin Mary was born in the small city of Galilee, Nazareth. Her parents were Righteous Joachim of the tribe of the Prophet-King David, and Anna from the tribe of the First Priest Aaron. The couple was without child, since Saint Anna was barren. Having reached old age, Joachim and Anna did not lose hope in God’s mercy. They had strong faith that for God everything is possible, and that He would be able to overcome the barrenness of Anna even in her old age, as He had once overcame the barrenness of Sarah, spouse of the Patriarch Abraham. Saints Joachim and Anna vowed to dedicate the child which the Lord might give them, to the service of God in the Temple. Childlessness was considered among the Hebrew nation as a Divine punishment for sin, and therefore the righteous Saints Joachim and Anna had to endure abuse from their own countrymen. On one of the feast days at the Temple in Jerusalem the elderly Joachim brought his sacrifice to offer to God, but the High Priest would not accept it, considering him to be unworthy since he was childless. Saint Joachim in deep grief went into the wilderness, and there he prayed with tears to the Lord for a child. Saint Anna wept bitterly when she learned what had happened at the Jerusalem Temple. Never once did she complain against the Lord, but rather she prayed to ask God’s mercy on her family. The Lord fulfilled her petitions when the pious couple had attained to extreme old age and prepared themselves by virtuous life for a sublime calling: to be the parents of the Most Holy Virgin Mary, the future Mother of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Archangel Gabriel brought Joachim and Anna the joyous message that their prayers were heard by God, and of them would be born a most blessed daughter Mary, through whom would come the salvation of all the world. The Most Holy Virgin Mary surpassed in purity and virtue not only all mankind, but also the angels. She was manifest as the living Temple of God, so the Church sings in its festal hymns: “the East Gate... bringing Christ into the world for the salvation of our souls” (2nd Stikhera on “Lord, I Have Cried”, Tone 6). The Nativity of the Theotokos marks the change of the times when the great and comforting promises of God for the salvation of the human race from slavery to the devil are about to be fulfilled. This event has brought to earth the grace of the Kingdom of God, a Kingdom of Truth, piety, virtue and everlasting life. The Theotokos is revealed to all of us by grace as a merciful intercessor and mother, to whom we have recourse with filial devotion.

YOUTH MINISTRIES Sunday School The Sunday School Program is for children from Pre-K (age 4 by September 1) through 12th grade. We meet every Sunday immediately following Holy Communion except during the Summer and certain Holidays. Sunday School is off to a great start with a fantastic group of teachers and students. Thank you to Father Simon for the "special prayer service" for the staff and students. Parents, please continue to send your child(ren) to class after communion. Hope to see you at the Auxillary Fair. Note from Father Simon: It is important that the children and their teachers receive Holy Communion first, so they may have as much time as possible to learn about our precious Faith. Parents, since we are now saying the Prayers Before Holy Communion together, please wait until these prayers have been completed before taking your children to the Narthex to line them up for Holy Communion. Once our youth have received, the ushers will dismiss the faithful row by row. Thank you for your assistance! Teachers Pre-K /KK 1st/2nd 3rd/4th 5th/6th 7th/8th 9th-12th

HOPE/JOY Welcome to all the HOPE/JOY families at Annunciation! HOPE & JOY are the children’s ministries of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of American. HOPE is the ministry for the Kindergarten though 2nd grade children and JOY, the Junior Orthodox Youth, is the ministry for the 3rd through 6th grade children. Since HOPE & JOY are ministries, the programs reflect the Orthodox Christian Faith, Tradition and Life. I am taking over as the organizer for the group this year. I hope you are looking forward to a fun year full of Worship, Witness, Service, and Fellowship activities. We would like ask each family to volunteer to head up at least one activity for the year. Our activities usually run from October through May. I will outline the schedule and list the activities that we already have, although the exact date may not have been chosen yet. I will also give a list of activities that might peak your interest. It would be great if you could choose a month (a couple of dates that work for you) and an activity, and I can check the church calendar to see what date works best. Father Simon has asked that we incorporate one of the 4 areas mentioned above into our Youth Calendar activities. I will have a booth set up at the Auxiliary Fair on Sept. 10th. Please stop by to sign up for an activity. Or just to visit. :) September 10 - Auxiliary Fair October - Need coordinator November - Need coordinator December - Christmas Caroling with GOYA January - Need coordinator February - Need coordinator March 31 - Parish Breakfast - Palm Cross Folding - Parish Clean Up April 6 - Lenten Youth Retreat (Holy Friday) - Need Coordinator May - Need Coordinator Activity ideas: Apple picking, Pumpkin Patch, Zoo lights, Ice skating, Botanic gardens, Mud Island, Making cards for parish shut-ins, sports games, drive-in movies. GOYA We have an exciting year planned for GOYA this year. We had our kick-off meeting to go over the plans for the year. We have a new curriculum this year called Y2AM that we will use to enrich our GOYANS spiritually while we serve our community and have some fun! Be sure and check the GOYA Facebook page and your emails for more details. The calendar (subject to change) is as follows: September 17th (Theme-Love) · 12:00 lunch · Y2AM ministry 12:30-1:30; Tshirt project, “Ask Father Simon” (questions submitted at first meeting) · More than a Meal-3:00 Saturday September 23rd GOYA Outing (Theme-Fellowship/Appreciation) · Tigers vs SIU-4 PM Tailgate, 7pm kickoff (More details to follow) · GOYANS must bring something for tailgate that they prepared on their own. By serving others, our youth learn appreciation. · Note: A Sign-Up Genius is forthcoming. We will need to have a final headcount and all money turned in by 9/11. $15 per person. Checks made out to GOYA. (See flyer—thank you Cyndi Detty!) A Book Review by Bill Benson, Library Director In Peace Let Us Pray to the Lord: An Orthodox Interpretation of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit By Father Alexis Trader Monastery of Karakallou, Mount Athos Greece Regina Orthodox Press During my childhood, my parents were neither active in any faith tradition nor were they of the same faith tradition. I began my spiritual journey towards Christ by being taken to church by a kind neighbor. She was firmly protestant but no real anchor in any denomination so she went to many different churches. Because of this I became exposed to the Free Methodist, Nazarene, Baptist, and lastly charismatic churches. By the time I was 12 I was attending our local Assembly of God church (it was also where I was to meet my future wife). Here I fell fully into the Pentecostal movement, impressed by the fervor and excitement of the practice of speaking in tongues and all that followed along that path. At 18 years of age I went off to bible school as all good A/G youth are expected to go at that time and began to study the history of the Bible, the church, and the Pentecostal movement. Within the first year of history I began to realize that there was no true historical base behind the Pentecostal movement and its actions. The seeds were sown, I was unsure of the faith I was practicing and the legitimacy it claimed. Some 26 years later after seeking, studying, and generally giving up on any church being truly obedient to the apostolic church I came to Orthodoxy. After 18 months of catechism my wife and I were brought into the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. My time of searching was over. But there was one problem; I still hadn’t completely purged myself of the charismatic thought. My father confessor and I spoke often during my confessions. I wasn’t engaged in the practice of tongues but I still stubbornly held on that it wasn’t all bad, just misapplied. Father was patient with me, we prayed, and months later through the prayers and miracle of Saint John Maximovitch the scales fell off, I was completely spiritually healed from this prelest.

Later while relaying my story to a priest friend, he gave me this gem of a book. I read and read, dog-eared and wore out the book. It reminded me of my earlier studies of the Pentecostal movement, the historical reasons I found that showed it to be false, and allowed me to correctly understand the Orthodox understanding of the Gifts of the Spirit. The book is made up of two basic sections – Part One-The Church of Pentecost: The Holy Orthodox Church, and Part Two-The Pentecostal Churches. The first section gives a well detailed Orthodox understanding of Pentecost and the early Church, patristic readings concerning Pentecost, Corinthians, and the Grace of the Church. Part two details the roots of the movement, the movement today, and the heresies and division that has come about from it. The book is well footnoted, giving one plenty of extra reading if they wished, and a wonderful appendix containing examples of elders, early fathers, and the recently canonized Saint Prophyrios, and how they experienced the Gifts of the Spirit. With the Pentecostal movement being so prevalent in the South, the opportunity to think of it as just another quirky faith tradition may lead too easily to accepting the teachings and practices as truth. If you have friends, family, or if you converted out of a Pentecostal tradition I recommend this book to read. If you have interest in understanding the problems and heresies of the movement, this too is a good book to garner understanding in the proper Orthodox perspective. As with all spiritual books, I always suggest that you share your insights and questions with your father confessor to help fully understand what is written. It is important to continually build up our spiritual knowledge of the Orthodox Faith, and this is one book that I will always have in my personal library.
