“Coming to College is very different to school. You get treated like an adult and your tutors place a lot of trust in you and your abilities. The College has various apprentices working at Manchester United

Veronica Macahilas

Apprentice Chef at Manchester United

“Without Trafford College I wouldn’t be where I am today. My tutor Lola has been like a mum to me and looks out for all the apprentices, always making sure we are happy and are being looked after. I have never had this kind of support at any other college.”

Ellie White

Apprentice Chef at Manchester United “I always dreamed of working in Hospitality. When I finished school at 16 I looked for an apprenticeship because I’d been advised whilst on work placement with the Hilton Hotel that apprenticeships were the best route to take, especially in this industry. I’m so pleased that I took their advice because I’m so amazed by the opportunities I’ve been given.”

Robert Bailey

Apprentice Chef at Manchester United “I previously studied at Salford City College before starting my apprenticeship. I found that the academic learning style just wasn’t for me and I wanted more variety. I’ve definitely got that through studying with Trafford College.”

Aaron Mcall

Apprentice Chef at Manchester United “Studying with Trafford College has been really great; they’ve been like a family in all honesty and everyone has been really helpful. I’ve always really enjoyed cooking so this felt like the obvious option and I’m so glad I decided on this route.”

YOU HAVE A REAL JOB Most apprenticeships are full-time like a regular job. The number of hours worked must be at least 30 per week, just 7.5 hours less than the 37.5 worked on regular contracts. Apprenticeships must also last for a minimum of 12 months, and normally last between one and four years.

12

TRAFFORD COLLEGE APPRENTICESHIP GUIDE

IT’S A SECURE OPTION

YOU CAN AFFORD IT

You’ll need to check your individual contract but you should have the same rights as other employees, with a contract of employment and real opportunities for future progression.

Unlike most ways of gaining formal training and practical experience, apprenticeships are paid for by the government or your employer, so they’re great if university isn’t an option financially.

YOU’LL GET A WAGE

YOU’LL GET A QUALIFICATION

The national minimum wage for apprentices starts at £3.40 although a lot of employers pay higher than this. The average weekly wage is between £120 - £200.

All apprenticeships must include an element of training. They should be designed to give you on and off-the-job training, which will lead to a qualification.
