April 13, 1743 Thomas Jefferson is Born Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743 (April 2, 1743, by the calendar that was in use at that time). He was born at Shadwell, which is the family farm that was located in what is now Albermarle County, Virginia, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Thomas had six sisters and one brother that lived and two brothers who died as babies. His father Peter was a surveyor, sheriff, militia colonel, and a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses. His mother Jane was from a very old family in Virginia. Thomas Jefferson was educated by a tutor as a child. Later, he went to live with a clergyman who taught him Latin, Greek, and French. After his father died, Thomas went to another school taught by an Anglican clergyman. His guardian managed everything until he was 21 years old. When he was sixteen, Thomas began studies at the College of William and Mary at Williamsburg, Virginia. It is thought that he loved learning, as he is said to have often spent up to 15 hours a day with his books. While at college, he met many influential people who had an impact on his thinking about many subjects, including politics. He attended the College of William and Mary for two years and left without earning a degree. He went to study law with George Wythe, a very influential lawyer in Virginia. Jefferson was admitted to practice law in 1767. He was said to be a little nervous when appearing in court and not an exceptional speaker, but his writing and understanding of the law was impressive. Along with practicing law, Jefferson also pursued political life, serving as a local magistrate, county lieutenant, and a member of the House of Burgesses. He was also one of the representatives of Virginia at the Second Continental Congress and served in the Virginia legislature after leaving the Continental Congress. He was elected governor of Virginia from 1779 to 1781. In 1772, Thomas Jefferson got married. He and his wife had five children, but only two lived to adulthood.
