April 19th | 22nd in the year of our Lord 2018 The readings with this Sunday begin a gradual transition from the First Half Year of Our Lord to the Second Half Year. We expand our focus from the way that God won our salvation to the way we live our salvation. The readings demonstrate how the Risen Christ connects with us with His Word: Shepherd & sheep, Vine & branches, Friend & friends, Patron & protected.

Preparation Prayer- God the Father, You sent the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ. Please use Your Word build us up in faith, truth and love. Grant to Your gathered people our portion among the saints. We pray for all believers, for kings and rulers, for the enemies of the Cross of Christ. For ourselves we pray that our godly lives may be easily seen. Bless all You have gathered here today to be built up and strengthened by Your Word, preached, sung and taught. Amen . –based on a prayer by Polycarp who was a student of the Apostle John-

Leader: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Let us admit our sins to the Lord and to each other. Peo p l e : Merciful Father in heaven, I am completely sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against You. I do not deserve to be called Your child. But I trust in Jesus Christ, my Savior, and pray: Have mercy on me according to Your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt. Leader: God has canceled the debt of all Your sins on the cross of His eternal Son, Jesus Christ. Your guilt has been removed. The resurrected Lord Jesus Christ declares you to be free and forgiven. Believe this Good News: Peace! God does not condemn you. Go and sin no more. Response: There I s A Highe r Thr one

1 There is a higher throne than all this world has known, Where faithful ones from ev’ry tongue will one day come. Before the Son we’ll stand, made faultless through the Lamb; Believing hearts find promised grace; salvation comes. Refrain: Hear heaven’s voices sing; their thund’rous anthem rings. Through em’rald courts and sapphire skies their praises rise. All glory, wisdom, pow’r, strength, thanks, and honor are to God our King who reigns on high forevermore. 2 And there we’ll find our home, our life before the throne. We’ll honor him in perfect song where we belong. He’ll wipe each tear-stained eye as thirst and hunger die. The Lamb becomes our Shepherd-King; we’ll reign with him. Refrain:

“He has risen. Remember what He told you?”

Prayer of the Day: O Lord Jesus Christ, You are the Good Shepherd who laid down Your life for the sheep. Lead us now to the still waters of Your life -giving Word that we may abide in Your Father’s house forevermore; for You live and rule with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

John 10:11-18 Oh, dear Jesus, I am near You; Let me listen to Your Voice! Let me ever love and fear You; Let Your Word still be my choice. Many hardened sinners, Lord, flee in terror at Your Word, but to all who feel sin’s burden You give peace and words of pardon .

Tune: #283cw “Speak O Savior”

1 John 3:1, 2 Father, God of grace You chose us; Son of God, You came to save; Counselor, O Holy Spirit, righteous faith You freely gave. We breathe in the joyful news: “Jesus lived and died for you.” “Jesus rose! New life is given, endless joy with Him in heaven! ”

Tune: #283cw “Speak O Savior”

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus, Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there, He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church—the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
