Course to Course Navigation Are you teaching multiple courses at the same time, and want to save a few mouse clicks? The Course to Course Navigation feature in Blackboard allows you to instantly switch from a specific area in one course, to the same area in any of your other courses. For example, this can be helpful if you have just finished grading in one course and want to continue grading in another course. To use this feature click on the down arrow in the upper left corner of the page, and choose the course you wish to navigate to. Recently visited courses will be listed at the top for your convenience. For a tutorial with screenshots, click here. Over time the seconds saved can add up.

Dave Radell Adjunct Faculty [email protected] Currently teaches: MATH340/STAT210 Statistics and ESCI215 Introduction to Earth Science Education: Bachelors of Science degree in Meteorology from Penn State, a Master of Science in Atmospheric Science from Texas Tech, and his Ph.D in Geosciences from the University on Nebraska-Lincoln

How Long have you been with Peru State College? I started teaching as an adjunct for MATH 340 in 2002 at the Lincoln Center campus. When the Lincoln Center campus closed, I started teaching online and have taught almost every semester since then. So I guess that’s about 14 years, which I really can’t believe. It’s been great fun, and I thoroughly enjoy Peru State students. What is your teaching style? In any course I teach, I try to engage students in the material by integrating current events and trends that should be of interest, and that students can take with them once they leave the course. For example, my STAT 210 students analyze data collected from a personal fitness device (eg., a Fitbit). In Earth Science, the students use Google Earth to examine characteristics of both Earth and Mars. They also follow recent discoveries from NASA’s Curiosity Rover, which is at the forefront of scientific exploration. Share any teaching tips or tricks that you find useful: I always hold one or two online office hours per semester using the chat function in Blackboard. For the students that participate, I think they just want to know that you’re there and are real. It seems to foster better communication with the student for the rest of the semester, once they’ve chatted with you in real time. I’ve also been somewhat successful with using mobile device Apps for some assignments. For example, I allow students to use the Starwalk app for a Star Gazing assignment, rather than rely on a paper planisphere (which they can still use, if they prefer). When they leave the course, they still have the App and information with them, and can continue to explore and learn on their own. On occasion, I’ll field questions from students after the class ends on what they’re observing in the sky! Personal Information In my full time job, I am an applied research scientist for the federal government, where I routinely work with large geophysical data sets (big data analytics!). I have recently started studying numerical techniques to effectively produce, and ultimately communicate, probabilistic geophysical information for decision making. I also write and publish scientific papers, and peer review articles for science journals. For the past few years, I’ve been involved in earth science curriculum development for high achieving students. I was invited by the US State Department in June of 2012 to teach an earth science course I developed to advanced high school juniors and seniors in Egypt. This was a challenge, given the political climate there at the time. I’m an avid runner, and will run the New York City Marathon this fall. The marathon course goes through all five Boroughs, beginning on Staten Island and ending in Manhattan, so I have my training work cut out for me. I enjoy traveling, reading and music (I’m a “retired” bassist) and the occasional college basketball, Nebraska football or New York Yankee baseball game.

Laura Roberts Adjunct Faculty [email protected] Currently teaches: PSYC250 Human Growth & Development

How Long have you been with Peru State College? I have worked for Peru State College for sixteen years. I was the Director of Offutt Operations and Online Services for twelve years. I worked on Offutt Air Force Base and opened the PSC Annex location in LaPlatte. I also worked on the PSC campus for many years. I left PSC in 2012 to move to Charleston, South Carolina and then on to Weatherford, Texas but have continued to teach as an adjunct instructor. I love Peru State College and all of the staff/administrators who work there.

What is your teaching style? I feel it is important for an online instructor to create a safe and secure environment. Students need to know that you are there Education: Bachelors of Arts degree in whenever they have a question or an issue. Communication is the key component to effective teaching. I have the entire course History from the University of Colorado, open on the start date of the course. Students can see the weekly work load and are able to complete their course work while a degree in Chemical Dependency and dealing with work and life situations. I feel this reduces stress. Family Issues, and her master’s degree in Human Relations from the University of Oklahoma

I answer emails as soon as I receive them and student can call me anytime they have a question or concern. I also grade assignments within 24 hours after they are due. Feedback is essential for online students. I also send out midterm grades so that students know exactly where they stand at the end of week four and what they need to work on to improve their grade. I have added videos which correlate with the discussion questions. The discussion questions are personal opinions and there are no right or wrong answers. Personal Information I have worked in the education field for the past twenty six years. I was the Contract Director for the Continental United States and Panama while working with the University of Oklahoma. During this period, my focus was on military education and education expansion on military bases. I have used my degrees to guide and advise students seeking their educational goals. These interests led me to Peru State College. Peru State College cares about each and every student. I lived in Nebraska for thirty years in the Omaha area. In the past six years I’ve Iived in Charleston, South Carolina and in 2015 I moved to Weatherford, Texas to be closer to my grandchildren. I have a husband, two sons and two dogs. We recently bought a historical house which is 130 years old. I am working on recreating the gardens around the house. We love Texas. I like international travel and go to Europe as often as I can. My interests are in history, historical architecture and cultural diversity.

I am looking forward to volunteering for the Pythian Home which provides children with a safe, stable environment, educational opportunities and positive life experiences. It is part of the Texas Department of Family & Protective Services.
