Architecture
Arcanum Architecture, San Francisco arcanumarchitecture.com Stewart Cellars was designed by Anthony Fish of Arcanum Architecture, one of San Francisco’s most noteworthy designers of restaurants and wineries, including Roka Akor and Samovar Tea Bar in San Francisco and Francis Ford Coppola Winery in Geyserville. Arcanum is also well-known for its Bay Area residential design evolving the concept of the Northern California vernacular style. Arcanum began the process of designing Stewart Cellars six years ago by familiarizing themselves with the Stewart family philosophy and vision, then acquainting themselves with the town of Yountville. Evoking the stone ruins of an ancient Scottish abbey, a nod to the Stewart family heritage, Stewart Cellars emanates the look and feel of aged, handlaid stone buildings infilled with and complimented by Northern California vernacular style. The three buildings were designed around an existing heritage oak tree, creating two intimate courtyards, which connect each of the buildings in a seamless flow between one another. The stone buildings are made of local Syre stone complimented with custom finished wood cedar siding and steel windows. The courtyards are paved with Tamarack Flack and limestone.

Landscape Surface Design, San Francisco sdisf.com San Francisco landscape architecture and urban design practice Surfacedesign, Inc., focus on creating landscapes that “connect people to their built environment” with an emphasis on “personal histories and connections between culture and natural environment.” The firm, established in 2001, has designed projects in and beyond the Bay area, ranging in scale from domestic projects, to the Golden Gate Bridge Plaza, to Stonefields Quarry Park in Auckland, New Zealand.

Design Ken Fulk Interiors, San Francisco kenfulk.com Whether it’s creating distinguished homes, collaborating with one of fashion’s greatest, or hosting a private Stevie Nicks concert for 400 costumed Halloween dinner guests, Mr. Fulk imbues every project with effortless elegance. When designing the interiors for Stewart Cellars, Mr. Fulk imagined a Wine Country where guests would spend the entire day lounging in style— a special space where urban elegance intersects with a refined “camping” experience. Mr. Fulk explains, “We wanted it to feel like the country home of a distinguished adventurer with evidence of his life and his exciting travels displayed all around.”

Stone Buildings Tasting Hall The Tasting Hall features dark, rustic wide plank oak wood floors juxtaposed against light colored hand-troweled plaster walls. Exposed high vaulted ceilings reveal a wood scissor truss frame and showcase the main attraction, an artisan made horseshoe-shaped tasting bar made of white polished concrete and inlaid with blacken metal accents. Inspired by the old Scottish tradition, the Tasting Hall is furnished with a custom designed 20’ long oak Scottish settle. The horseshoe-shaped tasting bar is accented with leather blotters, embossed with the Stewart Cellars logo, intending for the blotters to age and patina over time. Six dramatic custom cathedral lanterns hang over the bar for illumination, and a collection of vintage leather wingback chairs and an upholstered plaid bench invites guests to relax and stay a while. Stone Buildings NOMAD Heritage Library The NOMAD Heritage library was fashioned as luxe wine tasting space with a bohemian vibe. The library opens up to a covered outdoor terrace featuring views of the heritage oak tree; and indoors, an oversized wood burning fireplace made of Syre stone beckons guests to make themselves at home. The library and terrace share the same floors, black fire brick stones in a herringbone pattern. Walls are lined with custom steel-and-brass shelves that display a collection of travel and adventure books. Built-in display cases illuminate prized bottles of wine and selected curiosities. The interiors are a mash-up of a continental world traveler’s library and the safari tent of an adventurous explorer. Walls are covered in burlap and cowhides are layered atop rugs. Vintage steamer trunks rest alongside elegant velvet chairs, and tufted woven Chesterfields are placed alongside a steel industrial coffee table. On the covered patio of the Library, a waxed canvas sofa, curvaceous rattan chairs, and benches upholstered in Pendleton wool invite guests to sip and savor their time together swapping stories about their beloved and most interesting uncle.
