Head Coach Mike Balado was named the 16th head coach in program history back in March. Balado begins his first season with seven returning letter winners on the squad, including three starters, with six newcomers added to the roster. Balado is one of 49 new NCAA Division I coaches at their respective school this season and one of 27 in their first Division I head coaching role. First year head coaches at A-State have averaged a record of 12-11. Last year's 20-12 record marked the best for an A-State team under a first year head coach. The Red Wolves face two opponents this year that feature new head coaches: Cleveland State (Dennis Felton) and South Florida (Brian Gregory).

Connor Kern enters the 2017-18 season listed as a redshirt-sophomore after the NCAA has awarded him a sixth year of eligibility due to prior injuries. ► Kern's 2014-15 season is his medical redshirt season while the 2015-16 season saw him play in eight games before an injury ended his year. Last year, as a redshirt-freshman, Kern played in all 32 games. THE X FACTOR Rashad Lindsey had quite the Sun Belt Conference debut, pouring in 27 points as A-State opened league play with a 74-71 victory over Louisiana (Dec. 31) last year. ► Lindsey reached double figures in 10 league games last year and the Red Wolves were 8-2 in those games. Overall, Lindsey had double figures in 16 games and A-State had a 13-3 mark ►
BRUCE ALMIGHTY Tamas Bruce was the only player at the NCAA Division I level to post two double-doubles in which he had at least 15 points and 15 rebounds while playing 25 or fewer minutes. ► Bruce posted his first such double-double with 19 points and 15 rebounds against ULM (Jan. 2). He logged 24 minutes in that game and that performance is one of seven this season in 25 or fewer minutes. ► At Troy (March 2), Bruce finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds in just 19 minutes played. It is just the third such 15-plus point and 15-plus rebound double-double in less than 20 minutes this year. ► Dating back to the 2010-11 season, there have been a total of 55 double-doubles of 15 or more points and 15 or more rebounds in 25 or fewer minutes. Only two players in that span have two such double-doubles -- Shawn Long (Louisiana) and Egidijus Mockevicius (Evansville). Bruce reached that mark in a span of 16 games played. ►
FIRST NATIONAL BANK ARENA In recognition of a $5 million contribution by First National Bank to the Red Wolves Foundation, the Arkansas State University Board of Trustees voted on October 19 to rename A-State multi-purpose facility formerly known as the Convocation Center to "First National Bank Arena." ► The multi-purpose facility will become First National Bank Arena effective January 1. ►

ARKANSAS STATE BASKETBALL HEAD COACH MIKE BALADO
SUN BELT CONFERENCE STANDINGS (AS OF NOV. 3)
Mike Balado was named the 16th head coach in Arkansas State's history back in March. Balado comes to Arkansas State after most recently spending the last four seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Louisville. During Balado’s four seasons working at Louisville, the Cardinals posted a 106-32 overall record for a .768 winning percentage. In the 2016-17 campaign, he helped lead Louisville to a 25-9 record and a No. 2 seed in the Midwest Regional of the NCAA Tournament. Prior to joining the Louisville staff, Balado was an assistant coach for Richard Pitino at Florida International University. During that 2012-13 season, he helped the Panthers to an 18-14 record, their first winning season in 13 years and fourth-highest win total in school history.
