At ARPS, we are fortunate to have an exceptionally talented, dedicated teaching staff that is devoted to the success of every student in their care. While we may be celebrating teachers next week, I want to thank our teachers for the difference they make in the lives of our students everyday! Have a great weekend,

Wh at 's Happen in g in Ou r Sch ools ARM S St u den t s In t er view Im m igr an t s f or Im m igr at ion St or ies Pr oject ARMS students created a photo-text exhibit "Our Immigration Stories" now on view in the ARMS Lobby-Gallery. It features photo portraits of students and text-displays of their stories which they created in art, social studies and ELL classrooms, thanks to a generous grant from the Amherst Education Foundation (see https://www.amhersteducationfoundation.org/ ) . The student work is displayed with the professional photo-text exhibit by Family Diversity Projects. Inc titled "Building Bridges: Portraits of Immigrants and Refugees." (See https://familydiv.org/ ) As part of the eighth grade social studies research of US History, students interviewed UMass students about their immigration and migration stories which prepared them for research methods to delve deeply into stories from their own families. There will be a reception for Our Immigration Stories on May 15th 5:30-7:00 in the ARMS Lobby-Gallery. You can read a wonderful article from the Daily Hampshire Gazette about this project here.

Com m u n it y For u m Sch edu led f or Com m u n it y Field M ast er Plan The FY2018 Community Preservation Act Proposal received funding for the development of a strategic master plan focusing on Community Field and the Regional Schools (High School and Middle School) in the Amherst town center. The facilities assessment and evaluation reviewed current and projected future demand, location and shared use of fields, materials (turf, sod, equipment), landscape constraints and conditions, size of fields, accessibility, other accommodations (restrooms, seating), parking and overall ability of facility to serve the community. The Plan would also scope out options for improvement and replacement for the various components of the focus area-playground, basketball courts, athletic fields, track and green-space for passive informal recreation. On Tuesday, May 8 at 7:00 p.m., there is a community forum at the Town Room in Town Hall to discuss Community Field Master Plans and all are invited. Visit this link to read more about the project at the Town of Amherst website. Am h er st Hu m an Righ t s Com m ission You t h Her oism Aw ar ds

The Amherst Human Rights Commission has as its prime purpose to promote a community of mutual respect and to honor our diversity. We strive to promote attitudes of compassion and concern for all of our neighbors. To encourage these values, we offer the Hu m an Righ t s You t h Her oism Aw ar ds, an annual celebration of Amherst-area youth. 2018 represents the 13th year of these awards!

It is the Commission?s intent to identify and celebrate local youth who have demonstrated acts of kindness, unselfishness, social courage and/or community service within their families, schools or community. Please help us by nominating a young person you have observed displaying exceptional kindness or consideration in the past year.

Groups of young people may also be nominated to share an award. We strive to recognize children and teens across the spectrum of age groups and schools, including those who do not live in Amherst but who attend any school in town.

Using the nomination page below, nominations may be submitted through May 18, 2018, to [email protected] or to the Commission c/o Deborah Radway, Amherst Town Hall, 4 Boltwood Ave., Amherst MA 01002. The Human Rights Commission will celebrate this year ?s Heroes at its annual community picnic on Sunday, June 3rd from 10am-1pm at Mill River Recreation Area. We will alert nominators and award recipients prior to the event so they can make plans to attend. We hope you will join us!
