Arrowhead District Wilderness First Aid April 1-2, 2017 Wilderness First Aid (WFA) is the assessment of and treatment given to an ill or injured person in a remote environment where definitive care of a physician and/or rapid transport is not readily available. Course participants will learn how to assess, treat, and, when possible, prevent medical and traumatic emergencies within the scope of their training. The primary focus is on basic life support, evaluating patients, and determining if immediate evacuation is required. Location: Camp Westmorland, Camp Westmoreland Rd, Florence, AL 35634 Cost & Registration: $80 for WFA & CPR certification. Registration due by March 1st 2017 WFA Prerequisites: Minimum age 16. Scouts should have the First Aid MB. BSA Certification Standard: “Organizations and individuals may provide students who successfully complete the BSA’s 16-hour curriculum a certificate of completion that will be valid for two years. Students must attend the entire course.” Day 1: 8 am to 6 pm         

This course is primarily taught outside, rain or shine. Please be prepared for the weather and to take notes outdoors. We will be in a classroom for a portion of the course. Students can camp at Westmorland Friday and Saturday nights. Course staff will be at Westmorland by 5pm on Friday. Coffee and water are provided, but no food. You will have time to go get breakfast/dinner, or you can plan on cooking - car camping style. Please pack a lunch for both days. CPR/AED is integrated into this course. CPR/AED hand-on testing will be during/after dinner on day 1. The course will conclude NLT 5 pm on Sunday. Students must attend the entire course on both days. The scenarios are taught using theatrical makeup to enhance realism. Please bring clothing that can be cut or stained during scenarios. Students should bring a day pack loaded with the 10 essentials. First aid supplies needed for the scenarios will be provided, but students may want additional items to help make improvised splints and stretchers. However, don’t bring anything you wouldn’t normally take with you.
