Dear Colleagues,

T

hank you for being present--not just here today in New York for this ISPA Congress, but every day in the work you do within our collective community of art makers and workers. There has, perhaps, never been a more apt theme for a Congress than the one our esteemed organizers have chosen for us to consider. The need to perform a “balancing act” is the ruling consistency in our incredibly inconsistent world. For most of us, on any given day, the instability of our nation and the world can be disruptive at best; destructive at worst. Decisions and actions in our daily lives, both professional and personal, can result in unanticipated and unintended outcomes. Even our clarity of purpose is easily called into question with changes around us occurring at the speed of a tweet or faster. Our very imaginations are challenged to consider just what might be around the next corner waiting to change a clearly planned course of action. So how to maintain equilibrium?  What practices or considerations allow us to take these challenging times and make opportunity out of chaos? We hope that you have brought your complete self to this convening.  To navigate the turbulence of our time, we sincerely need each other and our collective willingness to share our experiences, knowledge and wisdom.  This Congress is intended to give us ideas and courage as we assess a way forward.  But perhaps even more important to our abilities to balance in such unbalanced times, ISPA gives us a shared place, a community of thoughtful colleagues, and a sense of belonging that helps us transcend day-to-day  inconsistencies and stay focused on the important work we are charged with.

WELCOME

MESSAGE FROM THE C0-CHAIRS OF THE NEW YORK CONGRESS Dear colleagues from around the globe,

A

warm welcome to the New York Congress! We have chosen Balancing Acts: Art, Community, and Leadership as the theme for this year’s Congress after considerable thought in recognition that navigating in the fraught world around us is immensely challenging. In this moment of great divides, there is also great opportunity. On the policy level, against the din of divisive political rhetoric and eroding trust, rapid cultural shifts are emerging from communities as resistance, as social movements, as a trigger for creative actions. Artists play an integral role in such moments to bear witness, to lift up pressing issues, to make us see, hear and feel them such that it resonates with us and we are compelled to act and find strength to overcome all obstacles.  Over the course of three days, Congress sessions will unfold how artists can communicate about burning socio-political issues to gain attention and galvanize action? How the arts can expand economic opportunities?  How to balance international facing festivals with local community needs? What can curators do to advance trust with artists, audiences and communities? Turbulent times need inspired leadership. What can we learn from crossgenerational leaders about best practices?  Last but not least, we will be focusing on the positive aspects of our work as every day around the globe artists, presenters and curators somehow continue to find ways to celebrate art with their communities despite all the political, financial and social struggles they face. These questions will unfold the latest thinking to provoke, inspire and expand our thinking and practice.  We recognize with gratitude the guidance of the New York Congress Planning Committee. Over the course of this jet-propelled year, they have put forward rich ideas and perspectives that have shaped programming.  A special shout out to David Baile, ISPA’s amazing leader, and his team to making the 101st Congress a reality.  We hope that your experience of Congress is rewarding and enjoyable! MESSAGE FROM THE CEO Dear Colleagues,

A

s we enter the next centenary of ISPA congresses, we are always challenged to keep the program fresh, topical and interactive. We strive to reflect current issues and challenges which reflect our global reality from all regions. I want to thank our esteemed Co-Chairs Zeyba Rahman and Piotr Turkiewicz for their inspiration and leadership and the entire planning committee for their invaluable participation. To the donors, advocacy partners, sponsors, and our funding partners who have made ten years of Fellowships possible, thank you. And to our many committee members, board members and volunteers who facilitate the work undertaken by a very small office in a very big world, thank you. Partnerships are integral to the work ISPA assumes every day! And finally, to our members, thank you. There is no doubt that ISPA, and every organization for that matter, is going through seismic readjustments. Demographics are changing rapidly, governance models are under close scrutiny and we as an organization are examining our mission and our priorities. Thank you for investing your time and resources to be with us in New York and please join us in celebrating 2018! Best, David Baile

For many directors, the term international is imbedded in the title and/or the mission of their festival. And yet at the core, support for most festivals is through the local community and with it an expectation that local artists and organizations will be engaged and showcased. How do we balance the international brand with local needs?

he Latin Grammy Winning Flor de Toloache make New York City history as its First and Only AllWomen Mariachi Group. Founded in 2008, FLOR DE TOLOACHE is lead by singers Mireya I. Ramos (founder) & Shae Fiol (founding member). Reminiscent of the early days of mariachi the group started as a trio, Harp, Violin and Vihuela. Today, Flor De Toloache performs as a full Mariachi ensemble. The members hail from diverse cultural backgrounds such as Mexico, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Australia, Colombia, Germany, Italy and the United States. This defines their unique flavor and sound. The result of this cultural bouquet is an edgy, versatile and fresh take on traditional Mexican music. They coalesce as would a band of sisters, with a grace and vibrant beauty that casts a spell over their

audiences not unlike the legendary Toloache flower still being used in Mexico as a love potion. While working to preserve centuries old traditions of Mariachi, their melange of the traditional and the modern pushes the boundaries of the genre and brings Mariachi music to new audiences. Flor De Toloache’s critically acclaimed new album “Las Caras Lindas” received the 2017 Latin Grammy award for “Best Ranchero Album”! The group has just completed a tour in support of the new record released by Daptone distributed New York City based Chulo Records. The tour included dates with the iconic Mexican superstars Café Tacvba, as well as a Day of the Dead run with Latin Grammy Winners La Santa Cecilia and Mexrissey. 19

As we leap into the new year, we look to you – our ISPA members and congress delegates – to join the campaign and raise $25,000 towards the $230,000 needed for ISPA’s Fellowship Program in 2018. Your contribution over the course of the congress will ensure that ISPA continues to offer unrivaled Fellowship opportunities in 2018. In appreciation and recognition, donors will receive a donor ribbon, email acknowledgement, and I♥ISPA Fellow pin. Help us meet our goal! It’s easy to give or pledge in person at the registration desk or online at www.ispa.org/donations. Thank You!

“This is an arts and cultural festival unlike any other...” — BLOGTO.COM

“Bold as brass – exactly the kind of fare to hope for from a high-profile international festival such as Luminato.”

“A show like this, unlike anything you’ll see during the rest of the season – is what makes festival like Luminato special.”

“Time at Luminato is always time well spent. Each year the festival seems to outdo itself, both in scope and quality.”

The Science of Sound. The Art of Sound. Thinking Sound. What do Walt Disney Concert Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Musikverein, The Concertgebouw, Davies Symphony Hall and San Francisco Opera have in common with Ed Sheeran, The Grateful Dead and Metallica? They all choose Meyer Sound. You’ll hear the difference. We guarantee it.
