The LAUSD Arts Education Branch is supporting Los Angeles’ cultural organizations in providing FREE professional development opportunities in Arts Integration for all teachers in LAUSD. You can now register with: The Armory Center for the Arts, CALARTS, MOCA, The Music Center, The Skirball Cultural Center, and Urban Arts Partnership. The Arts Education Branch also offers salary points for a free course in arts integration, taught by LAUSD's four Arts Advisers in dance, music, theatre and visual arts. DESCRIPTION AND SCHEDULE OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES

LAUSD Arts Education Branch Professional Development in Arts Integration LAUSD’s Arts Education Branch offers FREE four-day workshops throughout the year. LAUSD Teachers can receive one salary point for attending all four days, and two points if homework is completed. Teachers may also receive training rate pay instead of salary points. Each day teachers will learn foundational skills in a different art form. Classes are taught by LAUSD's four Arts Advisers in dance, music, theatre and visual arts. NEW this Spring! An advanced level Arts Integration class in all four art forms that takes the work to a deeper level will be offered. Teachers can receive one salary point for attending all four days, and two points if homework is completed. Teachers may also receive training rate pay instead of salary points. The Armory Center for the Arts 145 North Raymond Avenue, Pasadena, California 91103 Contact: Lena Marschall | Education Program Coordinator [email protected] (626) 792-5101 x134 Program Description: The Armory Center for the Arts will provide a 3-day intensive professional development summer institute for 40 LAUSD elementary school teachers in arts integration. The training will empower teachers to better understand how to integrate the visual arts into their lesson plans through the hands-on experience of Armory-designed lessons that infuse the visual arts standards with Math, Science, and English Language Arts. Teachers explore a variety of arts materials and techniques, and develop arts integrated lesson plans and rubrics under the guidance of professional Armory teaching artists, in collaboration with other gradelevel teachers. Teachers will also learn to use visual art vocabulary when giving students constructive feedback on their artworks, and discuss contemporary works of art while exploring the Armory's gallery. CALARTS Contact: James Waterman Email: [email protected] The CalArts Community Arts Partnership (CAP) is proud to host a series of four Arts Integration Professional Development sessions at four unique locations within CAP’s network in Los Angeles County: California Institute of the Arts (Valencia, Northeast region), Watts Tower Arts Center (Watts, Southern region), Self Help Graphics and Arts (Boyle Heights, Southeast region), and Art Share L.A. (Downtown Los Angeles, Central region). Teachers can choose to attend as many of the sessions as they like since each session will include arts integration for a different art form and engage the community with arts lessons that incorporate the culture of the hosting location. In each CAP professional development workshop, core subject teachers will learn and participate in the art form being offered at their session, gain experience in creating artsintegrated lesson plans and assessment instruments, and actually implement an arts integrated lesson amongst their peers. MOCA 250 S Grand Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90012 Contact: Jeanne Hoel, Associate Director of Education [email protected] / 213-621-1706 Contemporary Art Start (CAS) is MOCA’s yearlong classroom partnership program connecting 3rd-12th grade Los Angeles-area students and teachers to the transformative power of contemporary art. CAS targets visual literacy, critical thinking, and communication skills by combining supportive training (at MOCA and in the classroom), standards-aligned classroom curriculum, two staff-guided class visits to MOCA, and family involvement opportunities throughout the year. Requirements: 3rd-5th grade teachers need to sign up in pairs; middle and high school teachers must participate in groups of 2-5 that include at least one visual art teacher. Over the course of four Saturdays, each one dedicated to a different art form, educators will gain creative and effective strategies to integrate into their content areas. Each day consists of one 3-hour session in the morning and a different 3-hour session in the afternoon. Sessions will be led by a renowned faculty of Music Center teaching artists in dance, music, theatre, and visual arts, and will be firmly rooted in the Visual and Performing Arts Standards and the Common Core State Standards. Skirball Cultural Center 2701 N Sepulveda Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90049 Megan Nevels, Associate Educator for Teacher Programs [email protected] Teaching Our World Through the Arts at the Skirball Cultural Center and Museum aims to equip K-12 teachers to integrate the arts into core curricula. In this program, we look at the ways arts integration can foster student development of twenty-first century skills like critical thinking, creative problem-solving, collaboration and civic literacy; skills that underlie all common core and state content standards. We learn and practice strategies to make core content more meaningful, engage students in social activism, and strengthen classroom communities. This program is divided into strands; teachers are welcome to sign up for one or more strands. No prior experience in the arts is required. Urban Arts Partnership Elliot Montague, Program Manager [email protected] Urban Arts is offering professional learning opportunities for all LAUSD K-12 public school educators. Workshops will involve hands on art making and provide teachers with strategies and resources for using arts-based, Common Core aligned instructional strategies in their classrooms. Differentiated tracks are available for Math/Science and ELA/History teachers. All workshops are sponsored by LAUSD Arts Education Branch and free to LAUSD teachers. Visual Inquiry: Using Culturally Responsive Masterwork in the Classroom In this workshop, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how to use master works of art as an engagement tool and to foster Common Core aligned, evidence based classroom discussion. This process, called a Visual Inquiry Activity (VIA), will be facilitated by a master teaching artist and feature a variety of art forms as examples. Math/Science Track – February 25, 2017 10:00 am – 2:00 pm ELA/History Track – February 25, 2017 10:00 am – 2:00 pm Storyboarding & Collage for Literacy Participating educators will explore the various ways storyboarding can be used in their classroom. Participants will be taken through activities that connect sequencing and storyboarding to different academic content in ways that are creative and engaging. In addition to this, participants will learn clear and simple strategies for using the art of collage with their students to create vibrant and dynamic storyboards. Theater and Storytelling in the Classroom In this workshop, participants will learn how to use theatrical techniques to engage students in storytelling and theatre in their classroom. Participants will learn clear strategies for integrating playwriting, tableaux, and monologue writing into their academic subjects, as well as gain hands on experience as participants and facilitators.
