Pet Therapy—A Note From Beth I have thoroughly enjoyed being a volunteer with Max, our West Highland Terrier, for nearly three years at Ashley Pointe. We have truly been blessed to meet and visit with so many wonderful residents, share stories, laughs, tears, coffee, and talk about various topics. We have both made many friends and feel so much receptive warmth on our visits. Max has also enjoyed the cuddles (and dog cookies)!

After 21 years in public schools, I am hoping to make a job change to return to healthcare, by working in a hospital setting. This will be an opportunity to pursue a passion of mine, while closing a chapter that has offered flexibility for my family and personal life balance.

As temperatures rise it is important to practice hot weather safety to avoid possible heat exhaustion, sun burn, or dehydration. Follow these easy tips to help prepare yourself during the hotter days of the summer months.

Dress for the weather and for skin protection. Instead of dressing in shorts and short sleeve shirts in the hot months opt for light weight but long-sleeved items to help keep cool and protect the skin from the sun.  Be aware of the symptoms of heat  Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of related illness. There are many warning liquids. Water, lemonade, juice or other signs for heat related problems including non-caffeinated or alcoholic drinks will aid skin that is reddening, dizziness, nausea, in keeping you hydrated. With that in mind, I will no longer be volunteering at Ashley Pointe after June 8th, but hope to do a drop in visit now and then with Max. Although this is a difficult decision, I want everyone to know it has really been a joy to have the opportunity to volunteer, and meet so many of you. I am very thankful to each of you for your support and friendship, and my life experience is richer because of you. Sincerely, Beth and Max

July Highlights — You’re Invited!

Chaplains Corner On Monday, July 4 we will celebrate the events that took place exactly 240 years ago when the Continental Congress proclaimed a formal "declaration of independence" from England. Focus is usually placed on the opening sentence of that document that many of us probably memorized in school. It reads: "W hen, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another..."

But the committee of five men headed by Thomas Jefferson who drew up this epoch-making document were not content with a mere declaration of independence. They also verbalized a declaration of dependence. The final sentence of the document reads: "And for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of DIVINE PROVIDENCE, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our Sacred Honor."

That spirit of dependence on the protection of DIVINE PROVIDENCE affirmed by the signers of the "Declaration of Independence" later found its way into our national anthem---the last verse that is seldom, if ever, sung, includes these words from the pen of Francis Scott Key:

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave! That spirit of dependence later found its way even onto our coins. The first U.S. coin to bear the inscription "In God We Trust" was a 2‑cent piece minted in 1864. The idea for having a motto originated with a Pennsylvania minister who suggested it to Salmon Portland Chase, Secretary of the Treasury under Abraham Lincoln. Chase, a deeply God‑fearing man, asked James Polloch, director of the Mint, to come up with appropriate words. In a letter to him, Chase wrote, "No nation can be strong except in the strength of God, or safe except in His defense. The trust of our people in God should be declared on our national coins." And so the motto "In God We Trust" was born. Unfortunately that motto that is still found on our coins and currency has little, if any, meaning for the average citizen of the "land of the free and the home of the brave." As a nation, we have, to a great degree, declared our independence again, not from another nation, but from God himself and from the principles found in his Word.

I take seriously the words of warning issued by Daniel Webster a century and a half ago: "If we abide by the principles taught in the Bible, our country will go on prospering and to prosper. But if we and our posterity neglect its instruction and authority, no man can tell how suddenly a catastrophe may overwhelm us and bury our glory in profound obscurity."

George Washington wrote this prayer on June 8, 1783 and sent it to the Governors of all the States. It’s a prayer we ALL would do well to pray on our nation's 240th birthday:

Almighty God, we make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy Holy protection, that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government, and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citizens of the United States at large. And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without a humble imitation of His example in these things, we can never hope to be a happy nation.

Grant our supplications, we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen 6
