Article Title Goes Here Chaplain’s Corner For the first time in 3 years, my wife and I were able to enjoy (?) a white, Minnesota Christmas with our daughter and her family. Most would agree that the white stuff provides us incredible beauty to enjoy as long as we don’t have to walk in it, drive in it or shovel it! Believe it or not, the Bible has a lot of references to snow, many of which point us directly to God.
When imperfections surface in our lives at work or at home, we must be quick to seek God’s forgiveness and accept God’s forgiveness. We must be quick to say to each other, “I am sorry, I was wrong!” When imperfections surface in the lives of others at work or at home, we must also be quick to forgive and forget as God has forgiven us. Finally, SNOW DECLARES TO US GOD’S CREATIVE DESIGN. In Job 38:22, God asked Job, “Have you entered the storehouses of the snow that I created!” Countless billions of snow crystals have fallen on the earth, each a perfect piece of design, and so far as is known, no two have every been found to be identical. What can we learn from snow crystals? It is God who made them and God made them perfectly. God also made them to differ one from another and God made them to fall to their places.
First, SNOW DECLARES TO US GOD’S PERSONAL PURITY. It’s snow that the writers of Scripture use to describe the glory of God. For example, in Daniel 7:9, we read "As I looked, "thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was as white as snow.” The implication for us is that God is pure as the driven snow. He is holy…and he has called us to be passionate about holiness as well. Second, SNOW DECLARES TO US GOD’S TOTAL SOVEREIGNTY. In Job 37:6, Job declares, “He says to the snow, 'Fall on the earth.’” The author of Psalm 147 declares, “He spreads the snow like wool and scatter s the fr ost like ashes.” (16) Snow declares to us that God is the one who’s on the throne. He’s the one who’s always in control, even when things seem out of control. We need to remind each other and encourage each other with that truth as we face together the joys and sorrows, the gains and losses, the highs and lows of life.
This is true of people also. God made us! And though we have all sinned and are far from perfect, God sent His Son that first Christmas that we might one day be perfect again through faith in His finished work on the cross for us. We are all important to Him and we are all loved by Him. Let’s be thankful and learn to accept ourselves the way God made us. The God who makes all the snow crystals with infinite variety also made us different from one another. Let’s be thankful and learn to accept those differences and to cooperate together like the snow crystals that make up the snow flakes that working together cover our ground.
Third, SNOW DECLARES TO US GOD’S COMPLETE FORGIVENESS. David prayed this prayer in Psalm 51:7, “Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. God shared this invitation through the prophet Isaiah, "Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. (Isaiah. 1:18)
