Who was Patrick and why does he rate a “special” day to be remembered? First of all, did you know that St. Patrick was NOT an Irishman? He was born in 389 in Scotland near Dumbarton on the Clyde River. Did you also know that he did NOT drive the snakes from the Emerald Isle? That’s pure folklore that has grown up around St. Patrick’s legend. Even more surprising, did you know that he is NOT even a saint? Technically, the Roman Catholic Church has never officially canonized him. According to one encyclopedia, St. Patrick “passes as a saint merely by popular approval.” Just what is the truth about St. Patrick? As a teenager Patrick was captured by a band of Irish pirates who sold him to a Druid chieftain reigning in the north of Ireland. “I was sixteen,” he explained in his Confessions, “and knew not the true God, but in that strange land the Lord opened my unbelieving eyes, and I was converted.”

“Sweet Potato Chips”

Patrick later saw his captivity as just punishment for his disobedience to his parents, realizing that God had allowed his bondage to lead him to Christ. Finally after six years, he escaped from Ireland, and completing a tortuous journey over sea and land, returned to his people in Britain. The love of God burned in Patrick’s heart for the people of Ireland. Despite pleas to remain, he finally returned to the isle of his captivity, this time bearing the message of freedom and salvation. Patrick wrote, “Most surely I deem that from God I have received what I am and so dwell in the midst of barbarians, a stranger and an exile for the love of God.” As a result of his life and ministry, thousands in Ireland turned to Christ.

March 14th is National Potato Chip Day!

“Cheetos” - Annetta

Saturday, March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day…..a day that simply provides many, whether they are Irish or not, with a reason to wear green and an excuse to “party.”

Yes, there is much myth and legend associated with the life of Patrick, but this one thing is certain---his life was changed by his faith in Jesus Christ and his passion in life was that others could experience that change as well. It is for that reason that Patrick’s life is not only worth celebrating…it’s worth modeling!
