Descriptions: Any representation in any catalogue as to the origin, date, age, attribution, genuineness or estimated selling price of any lot is a statement of opinion only. Any prospective buyer should satisfy themselves prior to the sale as to the reliability of the catalogue description. All lots are sold as seen.

2.

Ownership: The buyer shall be the bidder at the highest price at the fall of the hammer. Any dispute shall be settled at the auctioneer’s absolute discretion. Under no circumstances will a sale be cancelled after the fall of the hammer.

Payment: All purchased lots must be paid for on the day of the auction. Commission bids must be paid for the day after the auction. Payment must be in cash, debit, credit card or bank transfer. We do not accept cheques. Credit cards are subject to a 5% surcharge.

Commission Bids: Commission bids shall be executed at the lowest possible price, subject to competing bids and reserves. Chiswick Auctions Ltd cannot be liable for any neglect to execute a commission bid. Although Chiswick Auctions Ltd will endeavour to inform buyers by telephone, it is the buyer who is responsible for checking to see if he has been successful in purchasing something.

With shallow rounded sides rising to a flat rim, the interior with a pair of fish swimming in opposite directions, the exterior moulded with lotus petals radiating upwards from the foot, covered overall in a lustrous seagreen glaze except around the foot rim, 26cm diameter. Derived from a George II silver model, with a globular body, a wickerworkcovered arching overhead handle, the body enamelled with a continuous scene of beauties and attendants on a garden veranda all reserved on an opaque white ground, divided by ruyi-head lappets and floral scrolls. 27cm H. £150 - 200 67

The matching bell-shaped base decorated with a series of formal archaistic hooked key-frets, linked by crescent shapes in bright red enamel, above this a ring of lotus flowers a flower head encircling the columnar stems, one with lotus flowers the other with five and sevenpedalled florets, all reserved on a lapis-coloured ground, the base dates to the Qianlong era, the stems earlier, 19cm H. 70† A CHINESE CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL BEGGING BOWL. Mid Ming. With bulging shoulders that flatten off at the mouth and slant sharply down to a narrow, circular base, the sides and shoulders decorated with a pair of facing long-tailed Makara, their mouths, through which protrudes a long curling tongue and a string of pearls, separated by a red lotus flower with a yellow centre, the creatures supported on a band of foaming waves, their tails trailing behind. The base is decorated with a ribboned double vajra, 6.5cm H, 14.5cm diameter. £10,000 - 15,000 For cloisonné examples with similar Makara see Compendium of the Palace Museum, Enamels, volume 1, 2011, plates 95 and 99.

71† A CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL AND GILT BRONZE DUCK CENSER. Late Ming Dynasty. Formed in two sections, the gilded bottom designed to support the incense, raised on a lozenge-shaped base by two sturdy legs and webbed feet. The duck is modelled with lifelike proportions and the head tilted round to the left and open for the release of smoke and with a curling tongue slightly protruding. The expressive face is enhanced by modelled facial details and translucent green glass eyes. A gilded cash shaped opening, also allowing for the release of smoke is positioned in the middle of the duck’s back. The cloisonné is composed of mixed and unmixed enamels have been used to form a varied palette, 24cm H. Provenance Japanese private collection since the 1940s/1950s American private collection since the 2010s £20,000 - 30,000 Duck-form censers have a long history in China dating back to the Han Dynasty (207 – 220). They were revived during the Song Dynasty and continued to be popular through to the Qing dynasty (for a pair of mother of pearl duck-form boxes see lot 73 in the present sale). It was arguably during the Ming, however, when duck-form vessels reached the zenith of artistic achievement. Examples are known to have been produced in enamelled porcelain, celadon, bronze and cloisonné. The present example exhibits traits both typical and unique among the canon of known Ming duck censers produced in cloisonné enamel. The top of the base, on which the duck stands, is decorated with a large blossoming white lotus flower and a red bud among lotus leaves, the horizontal face below is decorated around with scrolling waves, meaning that when viewed from a high level of elevation, the duck appears to be floating on a pond of flowers above a surface of water, an effect intensified by the translucency of the green-blue enamels. When viewed from the side, the visual effect is somewhat more formal and geometric, the outer vertical faces of the stepped base are decorated with matching continuous scrolling cloisons sandwiching a wider inner section with a continuous pattern of white florets, two on each of the four faces, and with alternating red and black centres. This side view pattern is broadly similar to the South Kensington duck. This observation situates the piece uniquely within the canon of Ming Dynasty cloisonné enamel duck censers. The NPM piece, dating to the early 16th century, a century before the present piece, is presented on an oval base supported by four feet and can be seen as a prototype for the present piece. The vertical face contains a single ring of scrolling cloisons on a blue ground similar to two bands on the present piece. Garner, in commenting on cloisonné enamel duck censers states, “a number of figurative ducks are known, generally mounted on square or

rhomboidal bases” (Garner 1962, p 83). Indeed this is true of a number of ducks, including the Stoclet duck, the single duck from the Amezaga collection and the pair of ducks from the Pierre Uldry collection. However, another important category of base is that of domed lotus flower-form form, of which the Palace Museum, Beijing holds three examples, and a pair reside within the Robert Chang collection. Of these, all but one in the Palace Museum – over whose surface the cloisons mark out leafy veins – depict a lotus flower, creating a visual play between the lotus form base, and the flowers and foliage above the blue watery ground. The present piece continues this visual play placing the duck upon the lotus flowers above another layer of translucent waves whilst retaining the formal structure of the trapezoid base. This feature of the base is most closely reflected in the South Kensington duck but the effect is not fully realised and only in a form derivative of the present example. Realism of form is perfected to a significant extent in the present duck. The translucency of the green glass eyes gives them a lifelike glow and the feathers are unique amongst known examples of Ming cloisonné enamel ducks by being rendered in at least three distinct techniques. Flame shaped feathers down the neck and lappet feathers on the upper section of the duck are outlined by cloisons. On the underside of the duck’s tummy the feathers are incised beneath the gilded surface. Finally, on the gilt bronze head behind the eyes, tightly curling feathers are modelled in relatively high relief, bearing the closest resemblance to the Hermitage duck. It is a pleasure to bring this piece, hidden in private collections for over half a century, to the attention of scholars and collectors, and it is hoped that it will continue to instil delight and fascination in those around it for the centuries to come.

The goat has an auspicious meaning in Chinese culture and is often used as a symbol for the coming of spring. At the highest Imperial levels, paintings of boys herding goats were enjoyed and commissioned across the centuries. The present piece is a two-thirds scale copy of the Song Dynasty original by Su Hanchen in the National Palace Museum, formally of the Chinese Imperial collection (picture below right). Interestingly, however, compositional elements within the painting can be seen across a wide array of paintings and tapestries from the Imperial collections. Such paintings tend to contain a boy with either three, nine, or as in this case, eighty-one goats. In at least three other paintings, now held at the National Palace, Taiwan, central aspects of the composition are reproduced including the central boy, the goat he rides and the pine tree which sweeps diagonally over his head. In these paintings too, various individual goats or small goat groups bear striking resemblances across the paintings. This would indicate that compositions were built up around known compositional elements and indeed another painting depicting the riding boy and another boy facing another goat (picture below left) would appear to provide the basis of a more complex composition, the boys and goats being painted in a sketchily fashion and without recourse to any background details. Compositions of boys and goats are also known in textiles. An embroidered textile dating the Yuan or Ming, composed of two panels now

split between the Palace Museum, Beijing and the Metropolitan Museum, New York (the latter piece incidentally was purchased out of a London based auction house before being sold to the Metropolitan Museum) bears a close relationship to these paintings (the two embroideries are pictured below centre). The Palace Museum section includes the compositional element of a boy riding a goat with a pine tree diagonally positioned above him, although in this case the composition is laterally inverted. That such compositions were appreciated at the highest Imperial levels is clear in the fact that the Qianlong Emperor later commissioned an embroidery of the very scene and graced the piece with an inscription from his own hand. The present piece, probably painted in the Ming Dynasty, and so faithful in its recording of every detail of the original, must have been created under close consultation with the original. We might therefore conclude that it bears an Imperial provenance beyond the reassuring seal of Zhang Hang. The painting also plays an important role in the story of the transmission of goat herd compositions thereby linking the emperors of the Yuan and Ming with the Qianlong emperor of the Qing. The exterior carved in low relief with taotie heads, flanked by a pair of openwork S-shaped handles, resting on a pedestal foot, European gold mounting to the base with engine turned rim repeated to the rim of the gold cover. The cover is surmounted by a pearl and diamond cluster finial, the inner lid with a seed pearl floral cluster. The jadeite with natural veins, inclusions and lighter patches. The original pearl, missing in the Sotheby’s catalogue photograph, was loose and misplaced during viewing. It was replaced shortly after the sale by Boucheron, Paris. 10cm H. 258 TWO MOGHUL INDIAN OVAL PORTRAIT MINIATURES. Late 18th Century. An inscription on the reverse reads: “These are said to be the children of the Nawab of Oudh, India. I was given the miniatures by one of his descendants, whose grandfather, after the mutiny, had sought refuge in Bhagdad. I often visited the giver... in 1902. I believe these miniatures relate to the Royal family and are of a much earlier date, El Sagastane” Another attached note reads: “These are the children of the last King of Oudh who sided against the British in the Indian Mutiny. His Spode tea set with the arms of Oudh painted on them was taken from the palace by General Wilkie and is now in his house at Malvern. Genearl Barnor.. saved the Taluqdars of Oudh, the majority of whom had remained loyal to the Raj... For this act the Taluqdars in gratitude erected a statue of him in Lucknow. He was the first and probably the only British subject to receive such an honour from the Indian Community, Regards Lousada Barrow”. Mounted, framed and glazed, the paintings 10 x 8cm.
