MARKET ROUND UP

nd

March 2 , 2017

Indian Markets Equity benchmarks snapped two-day losing streak and ended at six-month closing high on Wednesday after Q3 GDP data surprised economists and expansion in manufacturing PMI. The 30-share BSE Sensex rallied 241.17 points to 28,984.49, the highest closing level since September 8, 2016. It touched an intraday high of 29,029.17. Experts expect the rally to continue in current month, though there may be intermittent consolidation. Factory activity in February expanded for a second straight month as the Nikkei Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index, compiled by IHS Market, rose to 50.7 in February from 50.4 in January. Auto sales data for the month of February was mixed. Mahindra & Mahindra rallied 3 percent after reporting a 18 percent growth year-on-year in commercial vehicle sales and 11 percent growth in tractor sales but fall in passenger vehicle sales dragged total auto sales 2.9 percent. Escorts shares also gained nearly 3 percent as tractor sales grew by 29.5 percent to 4,247 units in February YoY while Eicher Motors lost 1.9 percent as Royal Enfield sales missed analysts' expectations, growing 19 percent YoY. US & European Markets The Dow on Wednesday blasted through the 21,000 mark for the first time after US President Donald Trump's measured tone in his first speech to Congress lifted optimism and investors viewed a looming interest rate hike as a glass half full. The three main stock indexes surged more than 1.3 percent to close at record highs. Trump on Tuesday said he wanted to boost the US economy with a "massive" tax relief and make a USD1 trillion push on infrastructure, bets that have helped Wall Street scale fresh records since the election. But it was a break in Trump's oftenabrasive speaking style that encouraged many investors who have worried he may struggle to push his agenda through a Congress reluctant to widen the government's budget deficit. Markets in Europe closed higher Wednesday as investors were fueled by earnings, fresh data releases and the positive implications of President Donald Trump's address to Congress. The pan-European Stoxx 600 was 1.47 percent higher with all sectors trading in positive territory. Construction and material stocks were among the best performers profiting from President Trump's promises to invest in infrastructure. Asian Markets Asian shares rose on Thursday as investors were encouraged by President Donald Trump's measured tone in his first speech to Congress, which sent Wall Street stocks sharply higher, while growing bets on a US rate hike this month buoyed the dollar. Currencies The WSJ Dollar Index BUXX, +0.19% a measure of the U.S. dollar against a basket of major currencies, were up 0.4% at 91.55. Outlook Indian markets are expected to open in green following overnight global and early morning Asian markets.

The price of non-subsidised cooking gas (LPG) was hiked by steep Rs 86 per cylinder on Wednesday, reflecting international trends. Nonsubsidised LPG, bought by those who have either given up their subsidies or exhausted the quota of 12 bottles of 14.2-kg in a year at below market price, will now cost Rs 737.50. Foreign exchange earnings (FEEs) through tourism grew 17.8 per cent to Rs 16,097 crore in January over the same month last year, the government said today. FEEs stood at Rs 13,669 crore in January, 2016. Indian companies raised USD 1.82 billion from overseas markets through external commercial borrowings and rupee-denominated bonds in January this year. Indian companies have so far raised funds close to Rs 29,000 crore by issuing non-convertible debentures (NCDs) to retail investors in the current fiscal to meet their business requirements. The central government has awarded contracts worth Rs 1,050 crore to develop sewage treatment infrastructure in Patna to curb the contamination of the Ganga river stretch. The government will set up two sewage treatments plants (STPs), renovate an already existing plant, construct pumping stations and develop a 407 km-long underground sewage network under the project.

Tata Consultancy Services today said its promoters intend to participate in its proposed Rs 16,000-crore buyback offer. Avenue Supermarts, the operator of supermarket retail chain D-Mart, has set a price band of Rs 295-299 for its upcoming Rs 1,870-crore initial public offering (IPO). The issue will open on March 8 and close on March 10, 2017. As part of its strategy to net 50 per cent of automotive revenues from overseas by fiscal 2019, homegrown auto player Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) is planning to set up a second base for itself outside the country. The focus on setting up a base on a foreign shore emanates from the fact that M&M is aspiring to be a global player backed by Rs 4,200-crore investments it has done in several countries in farm machinery and auto sector since 2008 when it made the biggest buyout by snapping up over 60 per cent in Punjab Tractors followed by SsangYong. Chennai-based TVS Motor posted 3.64 percent decline in total sales at 2,11,470 units in February this year. The company had sold 2,19,467 units in the same month last year, TVS Motor Co said in a statement. Stepping up efforts to recover bad loans, state-owned Punjab National Bank has identified assets worth Rs 1,800 crore to be sold to ARCs by month-end. Drug firm Lupin has launched in the American market its Clobetasol Propionate topical solution used for providing relief in various skin conditions of the scalp. Gayatri Projects has won Rs 1,363-crore irrigation order in joint venture (JV) with two companies. Commercial and heavy vehicles maker, Ashok Leyland, on Wednesday reported an increase of 5 percent year-on-year in its total sales for February. 2

Crude oil futures inched lower Wednesday, giving up early gains as the dollar strengthened as U.S. oil inventories rose. April WTI oil fell 18 cents, or 0.3%, to settle at $53.83/bbl. The Energy Information Administration said U.S. stockpiles rose 1.5 million barrels last week, adding to recordhigh inventories. While the weekly build was smaller than expected, there is little reason to think the global supply glut will end anytime soon as long as U.S. producers keep pumping at a furious pace. Gold fell Wednesday for a second straight session, as strength in the dollar, a rally in U.S. equities, and rising expectations for a March interestrate hike by the Federal Reserve pushed futures to their lowest finish in a week. Gold for April delivery GCJ7, -0.25% fell $3.90, or 0.3%, to settle at $1,250 an ounce the lowest finish since Feb. 22, according to FactSet data. Prices had posted a gain of roughly 3.5% for the month of February. Silver for May delivery SIK7, -0.29% rose 2 cents, or 0.1%, to $18.489 an ounce.
