DAMIEN HIRST Gone but Not Forgotten, 2014 Glass, vinyl covered stainless steel, powder-coated steel, rubber, gold leaf and mammoth skeleton 164.6 x 282.1 x 179.8 in./418.1 x 716.6 x 456.6 cm.

In this significant new work, made especially for amfAR, Damien Hirst presents the gilded skeleton of a woolly mammoth in a colossal steel and glass vitrine. The mammoth is the largest earth-dwelling mammal of all time. The three-metre tall skeleton used in Gone but Not Forgotten is a Mammuthus primigenius, one of the last mammoth species to have existed. Aside from isolated populations on the Siberian island of Wrangel, the woolly mammoth became extinct over 10,000 years ago. Unique in concept, materials and scale, Gone but Not Forgotten is the most significant recent addition to Hirst’s ‘Natural History’ series, which began in the early 1990s with works that include the thirteen-foot tiger shark in formaldehyde, The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991), and the bisected cow and calf, Mother and Child (Divided) (1993). These seminal pieces came out of an urge to “communicate an idea, to make art that is more real,” and to replicate the immediate visual impact of natural history museum displays. The steel tanks work to frame each animal in a grid-like structure, whilst the glass—in its simultaneous solidity and transparency—acts as both a window to allow the viewer access to the scene, and a door to exclude them. Hirst began using gold tanks in the ‘Natural History’ series in 2008, the same year as his ground-breaking Sotheby’s auction, Beautiful Inside My Head Forever. For the artist, the use of gold prompts a reflection on wealth, luxury, and decadence. Inspired by the legend of King Midas, Hirst explains: “Gold’s the thing that, when you open the briefcase in the movies, shines on you and sucks you in. It brings out the worst in you as well as the best. Midas dies of starvation, doesn’t he?” With Gone but Not Forgotten, Hirst addresses not only questions of life and death, but also myth and legend, evolutionary history and scientific reality. Despite the irrefutability of its existence, the mammoth has acquired an almost mythical status: both historically—in Ancient Greece, it was the discovery of mammoth skulls, with their large naval cavities, that arguably gave rise to the legend of the one-eyed Cyclops; and because, in the artist’s words “they come from a time and place that we cannot fully comprehend.” Mimicking Victorian modes of display, Hirst turns the magnificent skeleton into a curiosity object. The gold removes the mammoth even further from a conceivable reality until it becomes, like death, something unknown, that we can only momentarily attempt to understand.

In presenting us with this extinct creature, Hirst leaves the viewer to contemplate both an unavoidably finite expression of mortality and the ultimate fragility of existence. However, Gone but Not Forgotten also represents a symbolic victory over death for Hirst. As he has explained: “You don’t like [death], so you disguise it or you decorate it to make it look like something bearable—to such an extent that it becomes something else.” As such, this extraordinarily unique artwork also unexpectedly acts as a celebration of life and a tribute to the power of hope.

HIGH JEWELRY SERPENTI NECKLACE The Italian ‘Serpenti,’ or snake, has long been an icon of BVLGARI design. This mythical symbol of eternity and prosperity was sinuously commemorated as jewelry when Cleopatra visited Julius Caesar in Rome in 46 BC. Nearly 2,000 years later, ‘Serpenti’ jewelry regained prominence when Elizabeth Taylor—the glamorous co-founder of amfAR and star of 1963 movie Cleopatra—commissioned her favorite jeweler, BVLGARI, to create a collection that she could wear on- and off-screen. A tribute to the Hollywood legend, this High Jewelry necklace in white gold with a single drop-shaped Aquamarine (13.05 ct) and pavé diamonds (19.12 ct) is presented by BVLGARI’s current ambassador, Italian-born singer and former First Lady of France, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy. ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME TRIP TO SPACE WITH LEONARDO DICAPRIO Those of you who attended last year’s Cinema Against AIDS gala may recall that amfAR was fortunate enough to have been able to auction a trip to space on Virgin Galactic with Leonardo DiCaprio. And now, we are pleased to be able to provide one more seat on the same flight. Out of the billions of people living on our planet, the winner of this auction lot will be one of the few able to look down to earth. The trip starts with a calm ascent to 50,000 feet, at which point the rocket takes off, accelerating to 3,000 miles per hour, or nearly four times the speed of sound. Once in space, you will experience zero gravity, somersaulting through the spaceship before returning safely to earth. You will be among the first 1,000 people to have ever left the planet! This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The winning bidder will travel to New Mexico for three days of flight preparation with the Virgin Galactic team. After three days of g-force and zero gravity training and preparation, the winner will be suited up and sent out of the atmosphere into space. © Getty Images

JESSICA CRAIG-MARTIN Cougar Friends (AmfAR Benefit, Cannes), 2008 C-print 44 x 60 in./111.76 x 152.4 cm. Special limited edition of 50 for amfAR   As a photographer who has worked for Vogue, Vanity Fair, W Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, and The New Yorker, Jessica Craig-Martin has had ready access to the glitz and glamour of well-heeled society. Cropped and obliquely angled, Craig-Martin’s photographs rarely allow for the identification of her subjects’ faces, thus subverting the concept of society page party pictures, and instead focusing on the baubles, plumage, and other telling details that offer commentary on society’s obsession with surface. Jessica Craig-Martin has had solo exhibitions at MoMA PS1, New York; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid; Greenberg Van Doren Gallery, New York; and Interim Art, London. Her group exhibitions include “I Am a Camera” at the Saatchi Collection, London; and “Sentimental Education” at Deitch Projects, New York. Craig-Martin’s work is in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Guggenheim Museum, New York; and the New Museum, New York, among other prestigious public and private collections internationally. Her monograph of works titled Privilege includes the photograph, Cougar Friends. Craig-Martin currently has an exhibition of new works at Catherine Hug Gallery, Paris, and an upcoming solo exhibition in New York. Additionally, Craig-Martin will have a second monograph, titled The Optimists, published in 2015. The proceeds from the sale of this special edition will be donated in their entirety to amfAR.   Courtesy of the artist
