Past Experience Taught at North Bend Central Jr-Sr. High School in North Bend, NE Instructor of Music Education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Miami Assistant Professor and Music Education Chair at Ohio Wesleyan University Director of Bands at Nebraska Wesleyan University Research Associate and National Teacher Trainer at the Center for Music and Early Childhood Music Together Center Director What is your teaching style? Active learning with a high emphasis on why. Good teachers are good listeners and observers. If you pay attention, your students will tell you when they are ready to learn. Further, great teachers remain students their entire lives. Personal Information I am beginning my 11th year at Peru State College! I am a member of Gladys Kravitz, a power trio which focuses on keeping alive the improvised rock and blues sounds of the late 60’s and early to mid 70’s. I am the music director and conductor of the Lincoln Community Concert Band. My wife, Laura, and I have four children (Emma 21, Quentin 19, Jack 9, and William 4).

Education: Doctorate of Business Administration—Criminal Justice Master of Business Administration Master of Science in Human Resources Administration Bachelor of Arts

Positions held at Peru State College I started at PSC as an Instructor in 2004. I was promoted to Assistant Professor in 2007. I received promotion to Associate Professor and tenure in 2009. I volunteered to serve as Intermim Director of Graduate Programs from 2008-2009, and was Community Relations Coordinator from 2009-2010. I became Dean of Professional Studies in 2010, and in 2015 I volunteered to assume responsibility for Distance Education and Online Services. Thus, I am Dean of Professional Studies/ Director of Distance Education and Online Services. What is your teaching style? My style is fairly structured in nature, and I used an organized style which allows students to easily follow where we are at in the course. Online, I use research based assignments in the discussion board which allows students to grow in their knowledge of the material, along with presentations and routine uuizzes and tests to assist in retaining information. I respond to all inuuiries in a very timely manner. Online, I like to have the entire course set up and ready to go on day one. I also provide key documents such as rubrics, uuick sheets on APA format, and other documents to assist students in better understanding how I grade their work. On campus, I like to use the Socratic method, engage students through demonstrations of activities they may experience in the field or an organization, and use a myriad of assessment styles (uuizzes, objective exams, essay exams, Blackboard based exam, short papers, observation papers, argumentative papers, interviews with professionals, court attendance, and single or group presentations) to allow students a deeper and more engaging understanding of the topics at hand. In regards to teaching tricks or tips, I recommend everyone evaluate their courses immediately after teaching it, regardless of whether it is online or on campus, and note key changes for the next time the course will be taught. I also recommend working on Blackboard course shells well ahead of time to avoid issues which occur when changes are done and may not work immediately the week before courses start,. In other words, prepare well ahead of time. Finally, I believe in the old adage, “Walk a mile on their shoes.” Understand students, especially nontraditional online students, face a myriad of challenges as working adults trying to complete their education. As a former nontraditional student, the professors who understood this always stood out as the compassionate ones who I remember as committed to helping me achieve my educational goals. Personal Information I am a former member of the United States Marine Corps(1978-1984), a retired police lieutenant, and a small business owner. I am a former boxer, trained extensively in hapkido, and was an all state chess player in high school a long time ago! I have three daughters, two who attended PSC and enjoyed their experience j here, and a 3rd daughter still in high school. In my spare time, I like to attend events on campus and am an avid gardener these days.

Dr. Ellie Kunkel

Education: Doctorate of Education in Curriculum and Instruction

Dean of Education

Specialist of Education in Educational Administration and Supervision

Master of Science in Physical Education Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education

[email protected]

Positions held at Peru State College Assistant/Associate Professor of Education – Core Education and Health/Physical Education Interim Director of Athletics Interim Dean of the School of Education Current Dean of the School of Education What is your teaching style? Facilitating self-discovery. During the learning process, application and “what’s in it for me” are the driving forces of the learning process. Identify the “end game” and investigate the steps to get there. Your tips & tricks that others may find beneficial: Set expectations, communicate them clearly, and be consistent with holding students accountable. Quality assessment rubrics should be shared with students prior to completing assignments/projects, with feedback given as soon as possible. COMMUNICATE and LISTEN, and expect the same from your students. Personal Information I am involved with my church as a worship leader, playing my guitar and singing. Gardening and cooking are also passions of mine, as well as taking care of my spoiled little kitties. In enjoy traveling, spending time with friends, and am continually amazed at the beauty around us. Additional Information I believe when everyone has quality education as the focus, processes move forward. When distractions away from this focus get I the way, the quality of education suffers.

Currently Teaching this Fall: EDUC & MGMT695 Graduate Internships EDUC & MGMT696/697 Thesis/Action Research Project

Education: Doctorate of Education in Education Administration Master of Business Administration Master of Arts in Education Bachelor of Science in Education

Past Experience I am certified in: Early Childhood (N-K); Elementary Education (1-8); Middle School (6-8) Lang. Arts, Math and SS; Elementary Principal and School Superintendent. I taught 6th grade Math and Science for six years; served as an elementary principal for 11 years; and have worked in higher education for the past 16 years. What is your teaching style? My teaching style is to easiest to describe this way – hear it, see it, do it. Students learn best when they experience all three, they need to hear, they need to see and most importantly, they need to do … active learning. This is especially important in an online environment, where there can sometimes be too much emphasis on writing and summarizing; the students need to apply the learning concepts and “do”, become active – involved. Your tips & tricks that others may find beneficial: Make that personal connection with your students, whether that is something you read about them in a introduction or in an assignment or something they share in class, make that connection to establish a relationship of understanding and relatability. Personal Information My wife, Darolyn, teaches here as well. She is an Assistant Professor in the School of Education. She is without a doubt one of the finest examples of what a teacher should be, she combines her background of counseling and education to create an environment safe and secure for learning and growing. We have 5 children all together ranging in age from 15 to 32; two boys, three girls. We enjoy traveling, spending time with family, being active and I am learning to enjoy my home improvement projects.
