August 30, 1871 Ernest Rutherford, Physicist, Born in Nelson, New Zealand. Ernest Rutherford was born near Nelson, New Zealand, on August 30, 1871. He was raised on a farm and became interested in science at a very young age. During his adult years, he made many major discoveries, including the fact that elements can change their structure naturally, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1908. He also was the first person to knowingly split the nucleus of an atom, and he established the basis for how we picture the atom, with a nucleus and protons circling it, as in a solar system. His experiments were built upon through the years, resulting in many new discoveries leading to the nuclear age. In honor of Ernest Rutherford receiving the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1908, let’s take a look at the periodic table of elements. On the following page is the periodic table of elements, but some information is missing. You will see a white box in each place that you need to fill in information. Fill in the missing information. There is an orange box in the center of the top of the periodic table showing you what information goes in each place. If you need to find a completed periodic table to complete this, please do so.
