MONTHLY ELECTRICITY STATISTICS August 2017

HIGHLIGHTS

August 2017 vs. August 2016 Total OECD electricity production reached 924.4 TWh in August 2017, a decrease of 1.7% or 16.1 TWh over the same month last year. ‐ Production from Combustible Fuels fell by 4.4% in the OECD, compared to August 2016, with a decrease of 9.9% in OECD Americas, no change in OECD Asia Oceania and an increase of 5.8% in OECD Europe. ‐ Production from Geoth./Wind/Solar/Other grew by 7.6% in the OECD compared to August 2016. This included increases of 14.5% in OECD Asia Oceania, 10.9% in OECD Americas and 3.8% in OECD Europe.

January ‐ August 2017 vs. the same period in 2016 Total OECD electricity production reached 7 048.7 TWh, an increase of 0.4% or 28.3 TWh over the same period last year.

‐ Electricity supply for the months January – August 2017 was 0.2% above the level for the same period in 2016. This comprised increases of 1.8% in OECD Europe and 1.5% in OECD Asia Oceania but a decrease of 1.2% in OECD Americas.

‐ The share of electricity production from Combustible Fuels fell by 0.2 percentage points, while that of Geoth./Wind/Solar/Other grew by 1 percentage points. Additionally, Nuclear fell by 0.5 percentage points and Hydro fell by 0.2 percentage points.

‐ Electricity production was 924.4 TWh in August 2017. ‐ This was 16.1 TWh lower, or 1.7%, compared to August 2016 and 23.4 TWh, or 2.5%, lower compared to July 2017. ‐ Combustible Fuels production reduced by 3%, a decrease of 17.6 TWh, compared to the previous month. ‐ Total production for the year‐to‐date was 7 048.7 TWh. Comparing this to the same period last year shows that: ‐ Total production was higher by 28.3 TWh, or 0.4%. ‐ Combustible Fuels production grew by 0.1%, an increase of 2.7 TWh ‐ Geoth./Wind/Solar/Other production increased by 11.8%, or 70.4 TWh. ‐ Trade volume increased by 1.6 TWh, or 0.2%.

‐ Electricity production was 473.1 TWh in August 2017. ‐ This was 27.3 TWh lower, or 5.5%, compared to August 2016 and 19.8 TWh, or 4%, lower compared to July 2017. ‐ Combustible Fuels production reduced by 3.8%, a decrease of 11.9 TWh, compared to the previous month. ‐ Total production for the year‐to‐date was 3 434.3 TWh. Comparing this to the same period last year shows that: ‐ Total production was lower by 40.0 TWh, or 1.2%. ‐ Combustible Fuels production reduced by 5.3%, a decrease of 113.0 TWh ‐ Geoth./Wind/Solar/Other production increased by 15.8%, or 37.5 TWh. ‐ Trade volume increased by 5.2 TWh, or 4.4%.

‐ Electricity production was 174.1 TWh in August 2017. ‐ This was 0.9 TWh higher, or 0.5%, compared to August 2016 and 0.7 TWh, or 0.4%, lower compared to July 2017. ‐ Combustible Fuels production reduced by 0.2%, a decrease of 0.3 TWh, compared to the previous month. ‐ Total production for the year‐to‐date was 1 285.3 TWh. Comparing this to the same period last year shows that: ‐ Total production was higher by 19.1 TWh, or 1.5%. ‐ Combustible Fuels production grew by 1.7%, an increase of 17.0 TWh ‐ Geoth./Wind/Solar/Other production increased by 18.9%, or 11.4 TWh.

‐ Electricity production was 277.2 TWh in August 2017. ‐ This was 10.3 TWh higher, or 3.9%, compared to August 2016 and 2.9 TWh, or 1%, lower compared to July 2017. ‐ Combustible Fuels production reduced by 3.9%, a decrease of 5.3 TWh, compared to the previous month. ‐ Total production for the year‐to‐date was 2 329.0 TWh. Comparing this to the same period last year shows that: ‐ Total production was higher by 49.3 TWh, or 2.2%. ‐ Combustible Fuels production grew by 9.7%, an increase of 98.7 TWh ‐ Hydro production showed the largest percentage change by energy source, being 13.2% lower. ‐ Geoth./Wind/Solar/Other production increased by 7.1%, or 21.5 TWh. ‐ Trade volume decreased by 3.7 TWh, or 0.7%.

Comparing this to the same period last year shows that: ‐ Total production was higher by 35.3 TWh, or 0.5%. ‐ Combustible Fuels production grew by 0.2%, an increase of 8.4 TWh ‐ Geoth./Wind/Solar/Other production increased by 12%, or 70.8 TWh. ‐ Trade volume increased by 1.5 TWh, or 0.2%.

‐ The Twinerg CCGT plant has been idle since April 2016 and was decomissioned in October 2016. This has caused decreased production from combustible fuels and, consequently, a decrease in exports. ‐ Electricity production was 149 GWh in August 2017. ‐ This was 3 GWh, or 1.7%, lower compared to August 2016 and 4 GWh, or 2.8%, higher compared to July 2017. ‐ Hydro production grew by 10.6%, an increase of 8 GWh, compared to the previous month. ‐ Total production for the year‐to‐date was 1 421 GWh. Comparing this to the same period last year shows that: ‐ Total production was lower by 54 GWh, or 3.7%. ‐ Geoth./Wind/Solar/Other production increased by 83.9%, or 123 GWh. ‐ Trade volume decreased by 264 GWh, or 4.4%.

‐ Electricity production was 6 074 GWh in August 2017. ‐ This was 1 078 GWh, or 21.6%, higher compared to August 2016 and 217 GWh, or 3.4%, lower compared to July 2017. ‐ Hydro production grew by 2.8%, an increase of 107 GWh, compared to the previous month. ‐ Total production for the year‐to‐date was 42 580 GWh. Comparing this to the same period last year shows that: ‐ Total production was lower by 1 736 GWh, or 3.9%. ‐ Hydro production reduced by 3.2%, a decrease of 818 GWh. ‐ Geoth./Wind/Solar/Other production increased by 18.2%, or 192 GWh. ‐ Trade volume decreased by 1 628 GWh, or 3.7%.

PRINCIPLES AND DEFINITIONS The IEA's Monthly Electricity Statistics provides timely electricity production and trade data for member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co‐operation and Development (OECD). It aims to report as up‐to‐date and consistent information as possible for the last three months. It also provides previous annual data and year‐to‐date indicators.

General notes ‐ Electricity production and trade data are reported at the individual country level as well as in organisational and regional groupings. These groupings include: OECD Total, OECD Americas, OECD Asia Oceania, OECD Europe and IEA Total. ‐ The units are terawatt hours (TWh) for the regional groupings and gigawatt hours (GWh) for the individual countries. ‐ The grouping of electricity generation by source reflects available monthly data and/or small individual quantities. ‐ Definitions are consistent with the IEA's "Electricity and Heat" annual questionnaire. Statistics are subject to revision on official receipt of the annual questionnaire from national administrations or on improved data becoming available. ‐ To enable timely publication, the IEA may supplement national statistics with data from other sources. ‐ Where adequate information is not available from external sources, estimates have been made by the IEA. Methodological notes are provided in individual country pages. ‐ Monthly data are consistent with those provided in the quarterly "Oil, Gas, Coal and Electricity" book published by the IEA. ‐ All figures for individual countries are reported to the nearest whole number and totals may not equal the sum of components due to rounding. ‐ Note that historic data are often recalculated. Therefore, the latest publication should be considered the most accurate. Regional and organisational summaries may also change based on country recalcuations. ‐ Countries' submitted monthly data is adjusted proportionately to maintain consistency with the most recent annual data for each generation source.

Nuclear Hydro Geoth./Wind/Solar/Other

Electricity supplied

Electricity produced using heat generated from nuclear fission. Net generation from hydro facilities including pumped storage production. Generation from geothermal, solar photovoltaic, solar thermal, wind, tide, wave, ocean and other non‐combustible sources. The sum of electricity production by energy source. Amounts of electricity that have crossed political boundaries of the country, whether customs clearance has taken place or not. Indigenous production + Imports ‐ Exports. It includes transmission and distribution losses.

Year Year‐to‐Date

Calendar year (January to December) unless otherwise stated. The sum of all months from the start of the calendar year to the latest month.

Indigenous Production Imports/ Exports

Production from fossil fuels (primary coal, coal products, peat and peat products, oil shale and oil sands, crude oil, NGL, oil products, natural gas) and combustible renewables and wastes (solid biofuels, biogases, liquid biofuels, industrial and municipal waste).
