From the national parks in the north, travel south through the heart of the Australian outback to Ayers Rock and ending up in the wine regions of south Australia. An unforgettable experience of this magnificent continent.

Day 1: Adelaide to Port Augusta (382km) There is a choice of routes today. Travel through Port Pirie, a pleasant drive taking around four hours. A more scenic drive is via Clare where the wineries are well worth a visit.

Day 8: Alice Springs Explore the area or simply relax. Visit the Old Telegraph Station, the original Royal Flying Doctor Service or the Alice Springs Desert Park.

Day 2: Port Augusta to Coober Pedy (540km) Travel into the real outback and desert of Australia to the unique township of Coober Pedy, where most of the population live in the cool underground.

Day 9: Alice Springs to Tennant Creek (530km) Travel through small outback towns before reaching the Devils Marbles. The Marbles consist of hundreds of huge round boulders, precariously balanced one on top of the other.

Day 3: Coober Pedy to Marla (235km) Explore Coober Pedy. Travel north through Cadney Homestead and on to Marla, the start of the famous Oodnadatta Track. Day 4: Marla to Uluru (Ayers Rock) (500km) Leaving Marla, continue travelling through to Uluru and Yulara Resort. This afternoon head out to the rock. Day 5: Uluru An entire day at leisure to explore all that the region has to offer. Take a walk around the rock and visit the Cultural Centre. This afternoon visit Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) and take a walk through the Valley of the Winds before viewing a spectacular sunset. Day 6: Uluru to Kings Canyon (318km) Rise early to experience the beautiful sunrise or take a walk into the majestic Walpa (Olga) Gorge. Leaving Uluru, pass by the majestic flat topped mountain, Mt Conner. Skirt the rim of Kings Canyon and view the ‘Garden of Eden’. Day 7: Kings Canyon to Alice Springs (476km or via the Mereenie Loop Road 390km) Take the Rim Walk at Kings Canyon early this morning when it’s cool. Depart Kings Canyon before heading to Alice Springs. Alternatively, for those with a 4WD vehicle, take the Mereenie Loop Road from Kings Canyon to Alice Springs.

Day 10: Tennant Creek to Katherine (663km) Continue north to Daly Waters and Mataranka, where thermal springs make a great spot to stop and relax. Travel to Katherine. Day 11: Katherine This morning take the two hour Katherine Gorge cruise. Day 12: Katherine to Kakadu National Park (340km) Travel to the small town of Pine Creek, pass the Mary River Roadhouse before arriving in Cooinda. Day 13: Kakadu National Park Take the Yellow Water cruise and see colourful birdlife and the ever present crocodile. View the Aboriginal rock art at Ubirr Rock and Nourlangie Rock. Day 14: Kakadu National Park to Darwin (254km) Depart Kakadu and perhaps take a cruise on the Adelaide River to see the jumping crocodiles or stop at Window on the Wetlands Visitor Centre. View the prolific birdlife at Fogg Dam before driving to Darwin. Day 15: Darwin The car is booked until the following day and should be dropped off by the same time it was picked up on day 1 to avoid any additional charges.
