260 A KOREAN CELADON WATERPOT. Choson Period, 18th Century. The peach shaped body decorated with leaves modelled in relief, covered overall with a thick crackle glaze, the handle and S-shaped stem modelled naturalistically as a branch, 13cm H. £400 – 600 十七或十八世纪 寿桃形加多壶 Literature: For related examples see The National Museum of Korea, 1991, p. 137, fig. 5; Sekai Toji Zenshu, Vol XIX, Yi Dynasty, 1980, p. 193, fig. 208 and Far Eastern Art at Spink, 1993, p. 40, cat no 45. Korean tea culture has an early history having been introduced from China in the Tang Dynasty, if not earlier. The majority of Korean celadon teapots appear to date from the Goryeo Dynasty (936 – 1392) with tea drinking having declined in the succeeding Joseon period (1392 – 1910). For a more detailed discussion see Tea Culture: the Amore Museum Permanent Collection, 2006. It is a moot point whether lot 260 would have ever been used for tea, but the object illuminates the cultural context from which the European Cadogan teapot emerged.

Decorated on each side with a lotus flower between a bat and stylised shou character, and covered all over with scrolling foliage, 16cm H. £200 – 300 清代 十八世纪 寿桃形加多壶

Literature: Compare to Chinese Porcelain and Wedgwood Pottery with Other Works of Ceramic Art, Hobson, 1928, cat no 308. Cadogan teapots, popularised in the West by Lord Cadogan (1675 – 1726) to whom they owe their name, have for centuries delighted the Western market for their puzzling property of being filled through the base. Although produced primarily for the export market since the early Qing (lots 261-263), they were circulated domestically, including across the Sino-Korean peninsula (lot 260), from before the late Ming. Some have argued that these vessels were designed as waterpots due to the challenge of cleaning their interior and lot 260 provides evidence for this case. Nevertheless, their position within tea history in the West is clearly evident.

The Chinese teacups, exported in large numbers to the West from the 18th Century onwards, often blended Chinese and Western artistic traditions with significant charm. Following Chinese tradition they often lacked a handle and as such, with its double handle, lot 277 may have been designed for the drinking of coffee or hot chocolate.

Late Qing, 19th Century.

The artistic variety and inventiveness of the category of the tea canister, like so much of the tea drinking material culture is underlined by a practical necessity – in this case to preserve the physical condition of tea leaves. In the West, however, from whence most of the examples offered here derive, caddies were a part of the ostentatious display that involved the preparation and serving of tea in the 18th Century and later.

Jade teapots are relatively rare within the Chinese teaware canon, with the difficultly of working the material meaning that to create an elegant teapot requires virtuoso skill. Pieces therefore tend to date from the reign of Qianlong and later.

A related example with an identical handle is held by the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco (Late Chinese Jades – Ming Dynasty to Early Twentieth Century from the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, 2007, cat no 117). However, the present piece is unusual for its tripod feet which recall wine vessels. The artistic cross fertilisation between wine and tea drinking ware has been well documented (for example, see Tea in China: a Religious and Cultural History, Benn, 2015).

301 AN INSCRIBED CHINESE JIANYAO TEABOWL.

302 A RARE HENAN WHITE RIM RUSSET-STRIPED BLACK GLAZED BOWL.

Song.

Northern Song Dynasty.

Of deep rounded form with steep sides and a groove below the rim, covered with a thick lustrous deep black glaze and a network of fine oily veins, carved gongyu mark to base, 6cm H, 12cm diameter. £200 – 300 宋代 建窑黑釉茶盏

Song Dynasty teabowls, of the types represented here, were made for both domestic consumption and for export to Japan where they were highly prized. Lot 301, the Jian teabowl, a type known in Japan as tenmoku is marked below, gongyu, which translates as Imperial tribute. It is well documented that such pieces were sent as tribute to the court. That such pieces were enjoyed by the highest Imperial levels is clear from the writings of Emperor Huizong which particularly praise hare fur glazed Jian teabowls (see Hare’s Fur, Tortoiseshell, and Partridge Feathers. Chinese Brown- and Black-Glazed Ceramics, 400-1400, Mowry, 1996, p. 207).

Japanese tea-drinking traditions date back to before the Song Dynasty, and Song ceramics have had an undeniable influence on the aesthetic of much Japanese teaware. Raku ware, for example, with its lustrous lead glazes, and understated form, elegantly channels the aesthetic of its Song Dynasty forefathers, whilst also embodying its own distinctive style.

Part of the Japanese tea ceremony, the iron water kettle, or tetsubin, gained a ubiquitous status in the Japanese household through the 18th and 19th Centuries. The best examples demonstrate the virtuosity of Japanese iron-working, and the category has long appealed to Western collectors. The influence of Chinese teaware material culture on Japan is clear, but influences also travelled in the opposite direction. During the political turmoil between the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Japanese Imari porcelain, with its distinctive palette, became a popular subsitute for Chinese porcelain exported to the West. When stability returned to China therefore, they capitalised for the newfound Western appetite for Imari style decoration by creating Chinese Imari-style ware. Chinese Imari ware ranged from the rapidly painted teapots (lots 324 – 328) to much finer works of meticulous detail (lot 276).

The combination of the delicacy and status of Chinese porcelain teapots in the West, and perhaps also a desire to customise, has resulted in some intriguing European embellishment of Chinese teaware including the addition of silver mounts (lots 284 and 329), the replacement of handles and spouts (lots 328 and 330) and the addition of a metal strainer to the interior of the spout (lot 283). Whilst such additions may be seen as an incongruous juxtaposition of styles, they demonstrate how teapots were treasured, personalised and thus woven into the fabric of the lives of individuals of the past.

Yixing teaware has an important status within the canon of Chinese teaware pieces, being particularly exulted when they embody the individual artistic achievement of a master craftsman. Dating back into the Ming Dynasty, they have become a symbol of connoisseurly literati, their esoteric nature being compounded by the difficulty of attributions with seal marks often referencing the masters of the past. Collecting boomed in the early 20th Century, and following the reinvigoration of yixing ware production from the 1980s onwards which has also fuelled demand for characterful teapots by important makers. 32

Few Tibetan silver teapots survive although they would have once been highly prized possessions of the Tibetan aristocracy and ruling classes. The two fine examples in the present sale, densely decorated with Buddhist motifs, demonstrate the skill of Tibetan craftsmen with their wealth of intricate hammered, chased and incised details.

The duomuhu is a form derived from a Tibetan object for the storage and production of butter tea, a mixture of tea leaves, yak milk, water and salt, drunk as part of Tibetan rituals. Lot 369 is typical of the indigenous form with a wood lining and copper plates held together by metal bands. The form was popularised across China particularly during the reign of the Qianlong emperor, who was a committed practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism with strong political ties to the Dalai and Panchen Lamas. Under the Qianlong emperor, duomuhu were produced in a range of materials including porcelain, cloisonné and canton enamels. Lots 370 and 371 show the continuation of the tradition across the succeeding centuries of the Qing Dynasty. Of the two, lot 371 provides the most direct reference to Tibetan iconography with the eight Buddhist emblems reproduced around the body. Each has been illustrated (left) alongside emblems from the Tibetan silver cup, lot 266, to indicate the transformation into Chinese taste, other elements include the cash symbol, the bats, and the rings of ruyi heads and lappets around the raised bands. In the case of lot 370, the Buddhist influence appears to be less, beyond the overall form including the raised bands which echo the metal bands of the Tibetan original.

Export paintings, produced through the 18th and 19th Centuries, were designed to elucidate an aspect of Chinese cultural life as a keepsake for a Western visitor. Paintings of the growing, processing and sale of tea invariably came as a group of twelve images. The stages depicted include breaking up the soil for planting; planting the tea bushes; cultivating the plants; picking the tea leaves; brining the tea from the fields for sorting and drying; drying the leaves; drying, sorting and pounding the leaves; pounding and dying the leaves; bringing the tea for firing; firing the tea and negotiating the sale to a tea merchant; packing the tea and weaving boxes; packing boxes of tea into a boat ready for shipping. See The Decorative Arts of the China Trade, Crossman, 1991, pp. 440-441 for more details. Lots 377 – 379 provide various combinations of these scenes, with lot 375 utilizing a more unusual medium.
