Avocado Market Trends and Prices February 2015

Market trends – February 2015 The avocado market in Europe is low supplied but, at the present levels of demand, the average volumes of one million boxes per week are enough to keep the market balanced. Arrivals from Israel have been small due to the storms and snow in January when harvesting has been interrupted and vessels have been regularly delayed because of the weather or because couldn’t be filled-in; exports from Israel are nevertheless reaching average levels in comparison to last year, even though with some quality problems and huge losses. Volumes from Spain continue progressing despite the problems occurred (rains) which limited exports that nevertheless stand just -4% below last year average. Arrivals of hass from Chile are decreasing and the number of containers to be exported from this product origin has been revised downwards as a combination of small production volumes and favourable prices in the local market. The Mediterranean sources and Chile are therefore supplying the large majority of the market. Products from other countries completed the offer: the first arrivals from Peru showed large price range and importers complained about the dry matter content and oil level, considered not adequate to ripen the product; Kenya is on the market with limited volumes and obtain prices in line with all other non-Mediterranean sources; deliveries from Colombia and Mexico remained limited. In this context, sales of hass avocado have been quite satisfactory even if not favoured by the high prices, the school holidays and the sluggish trend of the market for fresh fruits and vegetables in general; prices have been stable and very firm especially for mid-sizes, with small oscillations during the whole month. The supply of green varieties is limited due to decreasing volumes from Israel and Spain (bad weather effects for pinkerton and near end of season for reed): sales have proven active and prices continued to increase (pinkerton +39% above the average); the first arrivals of fuerte from Brazil obtained quotations above the average.

Little information in week 6 due to the Fruit Logistica Fair in Berlin. Sizes 22-24’ of Kenyan avocado obtained better quotations in comparison to other nonMediterranean sources in week 7. Prices for avocado from Colombia have been available only in week 9.

Israel and Spain are largely prevailing product origins in this market. Large price range for pinkerton and fino; the first fuerte from Brazil sold at Euro 9,50 while reed from Spain (in 7 kg ctn) at Euro 11,25.

Peruvian hass started selling at very high prices; some batches from Dominican Republic (10’ 12,58). Green varieties obtained considerably higher prices in comparison to other markets.

Small volumes of Peruvian hass sold at 8,00-10,00 Euro/ctn while the fruits from Morocco and Chile obtained 12,00-13,00 Euro/ctn as in the previous weeks. Low demand for green varieties (hass is strongly preferred in this market).

Market perspectives The market situation should remain unchanged until mid-March when the operations for the traditional Easter programs will start. Arrivals of hass from Israel have reached their peak and will continue to decrease slightly; Spain will be the origin with the most significant volumes, which will nevertheless be decreasing also because exports from this product origin might temporarily be suspended in order to have enough volumes for Easter. The supply from Chile will decrease until week 11 to subsequently be almost absent from the market and significant volumes from Peru will be available only after Easter; hass from Brazil is expected at the end of March. With the season from Morocco almost over, Colombia, Kenya and Mexico will remain complementary sources for now. The market might get tenser in the second half of the month because moderate volumes will face higher demand and the already high prices might further firmup (with which consequences for the Easter operations?). If total volumes will be too small, the traditional promotional activities might not take place. The green segment will observe a strong decrease in arrivals: the last volumes of pinkerton (small due to the adverse weather) start to decrease in 2-3 weeks and will continue to obtain high prices while reed from Spain will be on the market for two more weeks. The late varieties (arad, ardit) will remain available and their prices might considerably increase.
