Rationale

Schools in the 21st century have become more diverse than ever before. Understanding the participants’ and hence the parents’ familial, cultural, socio-economic backgrounds is of the essence. Involving and collaborating effectively with parents, as important stakeholders, is crucial for the success of any school. Overall Objectives and Outcomes             

List methods of parental involvement and collaboration with parents Describe the school’s vision vis-à-vis parents Describe parental wishes for their children Identify the various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds parents might come from Describe how the school views parents through its daily practices and means of communication Describe parental wishes for their children Assess diverse family structures and their needs Evaluate the parents’ socio-economic and cultural backgrounds Appraise the school’s vision vis-à-vis parents Review the school’s and one’s communication methods with parents Collaborate with other participants in devising a parental plan Produce new possibilities of involvement and collaboration for one’s school Create a plan aiming at the involvement of and collaboration with parents

Pedagogical Guidelines

This module shall be taught through two three-hour face to face sessions using a combination of the following:    1

Assessment Strategies   

Ongoing reflective inquiry Use of post-it notes and Classroom Assessment Techniques (CAT) throughout lectures and pair/group activities An assignment which focuses upon: - creating a school’s self-evaluation survey on parental involvement and collaboration - comparing methods of involvement and collaboration with other educators - using the survey and comparison to proposal an implementation plan which takes into consideration parental involvement and collaboration
