A Letter From Principal Wynkoop Beaver Families, It is hard to believe that we have already reached the end of first quarter, but Fall Sports are all wrapping up and Winter Sports are beginning. Last year’s start to the school year was so challenging that I have really appreciated the opportunity to have a smooth start that allows us to really concentrate on everything that high school is supposed to be. There are a few things that have happened that I really want to make sure you were aware of, so that you can have conversation with your student if you haven’t already. The biggest new thing going on at Ballard this Fall has been the launch of DAM Time. I hope that by now you have heard about this innovation that we have created to aid our students in a wide range of areas loosely lumped under the description of study skills. DAM Time stands for Daily Academic Management Time and at least four out of five days per week are for the students to get out their planners, think about what they need to work on and get started on their work. Almost every Monday is dedicated to a short lesson on a specific topic that will benefit students. We also see this time period as a great opportunity for teachers to build stronger relationships with the students in their DAM Times. To learn more about the specific lessons that we have taught in DAM Time, I encourage you to read the DAM Time article in this newsletter (page 3) and make sure to follow up with your students on the topics of the lessons (i.e. “Show me your planner.”) The week of November 17-21 is the launch of Seattle Public Schools campaign to eliminate opportunity gaps in our district. As with most of the rest of SPS, Ballard has very high achievement in many areas, but we face persistent gaps between the outcomes for white students and the outcomes for African American, Hispanic and other students of color. These gaps exist in state tests, graduation rates, discipline and more. Dr. Nyland has described this as the issue of our time and I could not agree more about the importance of it. Many of our classes had activities or discussions related to the issue, our Students and Teachers Against Racism Club produced a thought provoking video and many staff members supported our students through a choice to wear Black Lives Matter shirts, stickers or to support in another way. This issue is so important that it needs to impact all of our decisions if we are truly going to make a difference on this issue. The third issue that I wanted to return to was the recent visit of Chris Herren to speak with our students on the dangers of using opiates and other drugs. Students were extremely respectful of his message and many of you braved (CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE)

wynkoop (continued from page 1) the storm to join us for the community portion in the evening. Many messages stuck with me, but there was one in particular that resonated: Chris said that too often we talk about the last day, the day they OD or get arrested, and we don’t talk enough about the first day that teenagers start down that path. Students can write off overdoses as something that won’t happen to them, but most can empathize with that choice they have to make the first time they are offered drugs or alcohol. In the end, Chris’s message was about staying true to yourself and knowing that you can have fun while staying 100% sober. I truly hope that our students are still carrying his words in their heads and hearts. The PTSA recently launched their Direct Appeal and we truly appreciate anything that you can do for us. We are so grateful for our community and it is easy to remember that it is Always Great to Be a Beaver! Finally, Ms. Carrie Burr was selected as the 2016-17 Metro League Athletic Director of the Year. Carrie was extremely deserving of this honor. In six plus years as Athletic Director, Carrie lead a process to create a Metro Athletics Handbook, she created the Student Metro Advisory Committee (SMAC) and created the Beaver Nation Athletic Awards Night. #AG2BB Keven Wynkoop, Ballard High School Principal @theheadbeaver on Twitter It’s Always Great to be a Beaver!

welcome back from the ptsa president We strive to give the best education possible to all students! This means communication and fundraising activities to ensure that teachers, families and all students have access to the resources, tools and support they need every day.

The Direct Appeals Grants committee carefully evaluates all grant requests from BHS teachers and staff, ensuring that Direct Appeal funds responsibly benefit BHS programs and educational needs. We understand that it must feel like you are being asked for money every day. I hope you'll feel free to contact me personally if you have any questions. Supporting a school with a growing population of nearly 1,900 students is not easy, and it is even more challenging in an uncertain funding climate from the state. We are raising funds for academic grants that are used to support the infrastructure and provide the required tools needed by our large student population.

It's about dam time! Daily Academic Management Time (DAM Time) is focused on teaching students the study habits and habits of mind that can unlock their ability to be successful in school and in life. A team of staff met throughout the Summer to design the program. One of the early decisions was to create a focus for each month and then design short lessons for teachers to present on most Mondays that are designed to build on one another and help students to be more successful. The themes to this point have been September: Organization, October: Self-Monitoring and School Technology, November: Content Specific Study Skills and December will be on Group Work. Here is a sampling of lesson themes for each month: September - Using a planner, Organization October - Using The Source and Schoology, Academic Honesty, Attendance and Calculating GPA November - Study Skills, Office 365 and Finding a Support System in your Classes We strongly encourage you to talk to your student about these topics and ask them to tell you what they are doing to make themselves successful. Every student should be using a planner of some kind (Ballard planner, phone calendar, etc.) and every student should be monitoring their grades on the Source on a weekly basis. If we work together, these habits that we are teaching are more likely to be fully implemented and make a difference in their success. On days when lessons are not being taught during DAM Time, students are encouraged to put these lessons to use. It should always start with getting their planner out to figure out what work they have to do and when it is due. Then they can start working on their homework. During this time, teachers will be circulating to support students and to build stronger relationships with them. If we work together, these skills can make a major difference for our students!

Here is the meeting schedule for the 2015-2016 school year. Board meetings are open. General meetings are for all PTSA members in good standing, and we always have a good reason to attend. AMAZING STUDENT RESOURCE from MICROSOFT Through an agreement with Microsoft, Seattle Public Schools is now able to provide Office 365 services to students in the Seattle School District. This includes Office 365, OneDrive for Business and Office ProPlus. The following information was liberally taken and copied from the district’s webpage about Office 365 and Office ProPlus. The link for that page is at the end of this article. For students to access Office 365 and OneDrive for Business, they should go to www.seattleschools.org, click on “Student Portal” found at the top of the webpage and then scroll down and click on “Office 365 Login”. When asked to login, they should enter their username (bal_######@seattleschools.org) and their SPS password. In Office 365, students can create, save and edit Word and Excel documents and PowerPoint presentations. While working on a document, it automatically saves in Office OneDrive. To continue to work on a saved document, a student would go to OneDrive (onedrive. seattleschools.org) or back to the Office 365 account, login and click on OneDrive. Then they would select the document and click on “Edit in the browser” for quick edits. If Microsoft Office is installed on a computer, they may edit in the programs Word, Excel or PowerPoint for full functionality.

Besides saving and editing documents, OneDrive allows for: ■ Real-time collaboration editing documents using the online Office Web Apps or Office desktop client apps ■ Sharing files with others and managing who can edit documents ■ Accessing the same files via a phone, tablet or computer away from the office Students can also download Office ProPlus on at least 5 devices. This is for grades 6-12, current SPS students only. To install Office ProPlus on computers and laptops, students should enter office.seattleschools. org into a browser and log in using their SPS username (bal_######@seattleschools.org) and password. Please note that this does not give students access to email. Once logged in, they would click on the gear (Settings) icon at the top-right menu. After clicking on Office 365 Settings, students may click Software to begin the installation process. To install Office ProPlus on mobile devices, they shoudl go to the App Store or Google Play to find the applications and enter the SPS account information. Visit the district web page for more information: http://www.seattleschools.org/cms/One. aspx?portalId=627&pageId=101921. Please contact Ms. Arthur [email protected] or Ms. Wood [email protected] for more information or help.

Thank you to every single one of our incredible student athletes and coaches for our awesome fall sports seasons. Ballard High School can be Proud To Be Beavers!

The Ballard High School Theatre Department (a.k.a “the Playmakers”) is proud to present

RENT In Concert

on the 20th anniversary of the musical Rent and World AIDS Day

DECEMBER 1st & 3rd at 7:30 p.m. Earl Kelly Performing Arts Center 1418 NW 65th Street, Seattle, WA $25 ADMISSION, STUDENTS $20 TICKETS ARE NOW AVAILABLE AT WWW.SHOWTIX4U.COM

Based on Puccini’s beloved opera La Bohème, Rent is a rock musical with book, music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson which follows the ups and downs of a year in the life of a group of impoverished, artistic friends living in Manhattan’s East Village in the late 1980s, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. According to the production notes, "With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters-love."

organization in Capitol Hill which provides care services to local people living with HIV or AIDS and which does advocacy for HIV-related legal issues in the state government. Health Education Youth Outreach (HEYO) is Lifelong’s primary youth education program for youth age 16-24. Run by and for queer and allied youth, it strives to foster a community that prioritizes empowerment, selfdetermination, and resiliency over stigma, fear, and condemnation through peer to peer outreach.

It is not by chance that the opening performance at Ballard High falls on World AIDS Day, December 1st.  The event is a fundraiser for two causes.  Ballard High School Thespian Troupe #5369 is proud to donate 50% of the proceeds to Lifelong Aids Alliance and their Health Education Youth Outreach Program. The other half will support a project that is already under way, the conversion to LED stage lighting at Ballard High’s Earl Kelly Center for the Performing Arts. The LED system is more energy efficient and much safer than the old heat-generating lights. At $25 per ticket, attendees will enjoy a full evening of entertainment while knowing their admission supports two good causes.

Director Shawn Riley has called upon some of his theater alumni, including Aisha Carpenter and Gustavo Guiterrez, to sing featured songs. Aisha, a 2016 graduate who is remembered at Ballard for her roles in Thoroughly Modern Millie (winner 5th Avenue Musical Theatre award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical) and Children of Eden (Eve), will portray “Mimi Marquez.” Gustavo, a 2012 graduate, will play “Angel” and his most memorable roles at Ballard include “Harry MacAfee” in Bye, Bye Birdie (5th Avenue nominee for Best Musical) and as an Ensemble Member in Cabaret.

Lifelong AIDS Alliance is a non-profit

To perform some of the other roles in the piece, Riley has assembled some of his musical theatre colleagues in the Seattle

area, including vocal powerhouse Melissa Backstrom (playing “Joanne”), 5th Avenue Theatre and Village Theatre professional performer EJ Harrid (Collins), as well as Savana Smith (Maureen) fresh off her critically praised turn as “Wednesday Addams” in The Addams Family. As a special treat for the Ballard High School community, Riley himself will be singing the role of Mark. A memorable evening is promised with this show which received its world premiere Off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop February 13, 1996, and transferred to Broadway April 29, 1996, where it ran for 5,123 performances, making it the 11th-longest-running show in Broadway history. Rent won the 1996 Tony Award for Best Musical as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Ballard High is honored to have the rights to perform the score, especially since a 20th Anniversary Tour will be making its way across the country this year with a stop at Seattle’s own Paramount Theatre. Produced by special arrangement with Music Theatre International, Inc. This show is recommended for teens and older. Language and lyrics contain references to profanity, sexuality, violence or drugs. Tickets are now available online at www. showtix4U.com Recommended for teens and older. Language and lyrics contain references to profanity, sexuality, violence or drugs. Recorded accompaniment.

Fall Band Concert was a Show-stopper! The November 3rd concert featured Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble, both playing fanfares. Wind Ensemble performed Eric Whitacre’s beautiful piece, October. Jazz Bands I and II were swinging hard with such recognizable tunes as The Girl from Ipanema and April in Paris, and Jazz 1 brought down the house with a standing ovation with a pitch-perfect rendition of “Georgia.”

With the largest band enrollment in 13 years, Director Michael James manages more organization, more uniforms, and more cooperation than ever before! He is proud that some of his former students continue with music at the college level. This fall there were seven alumni from the class of 2016 marching with the University of Washington Husky band and individuals in other college bands, as well.
