Commemorating killed/injured workers April 28

T

he National Day of Mourning was recognized in 1991 when Parliament passed the Mourning Act. Now endorsed by government, labour, and employers, the Day commemorates those workers who were killed or injured on the job. This year, a partnership of the BC Labour Heritage Centre, the BC Federation of Labour, BCTF, and WorkSafe BC are encouraging more schools to participate in the Day of Mourning. This effort has been endorsed by the BCPVPA, as well as the BC School Trustees Association, and CUPE BC. The National Day of Mourning is April 28. BCPVPA announcement (originally distributed March 12) The BCPVPA congratulates Gordon Li who has been seconded by the Ministry of Education and will join a team created to work with districts in implementing new curriculum, assessment, and reporting regimes. Other team members are Jan Unwin (Superintendent of Graduation and Student Transitions), Maureen Dockendorf (Superintendent of Reading), and Susanne Hoffman (Superintendent of Schools, Langley). Gordon has resigned his position as President of the BCPVPA (his term as President was scheduled to continue until June 30) and the Board of Directors has passed a motion to appoint President-elect Kevin Reimer as President. Kevin, Principal of Lake Trail Middle School in Courtenay, was elected last year to become President, effective July 1. We applaud the Ministry in choosing Gordon and know that he will make contributions fully informed of the important roles of principals and vice-principals in advancing school improvement and student success. Our thanks to Gordon for his dedicated service to principals and vice-principals across BC, both as a member of the BCPVPA Board of Directors, as President-elect and as President since July 1, 2014. Welcome to Kevin Reimer.

President Kevin Reimer on the upcoming election for Directors

I

want to begin by thanking Gordon Li and the BCPVPA Board of Directors. Gordon for his thoughtful work as a Director, President-elect, and President of this Association. His presence on the Board will be missed, but I am delighted that his new position, on secondment with the Ministry, enables him to maintain his Association membership. My thanks are also extended to my colleagues on the Board who have supported my early transition to President. My thanks, of course, to members of the Association who cast their ballots in the 2015 election. In my first Adminfo column (being distributed in mid-April), I revisited some aspects of my vision for the Association that I put forward during the election. In this, my first eNews column, I’d like to draw your attention to the upcoming BCPVPA election for Directors. Nominations open next Friday and you will find complete information in next week’s eNews, along with a nomination form. Over the years, the Association has had a vibrant election season. Since the introduction of electronic voting, between 600 and 930 members have participated in every election. Last year’s election for President-elect took three ballots and more than 900 members cast their vote at every stage. This engagement by members plays a significant role in the direction and tone of the Association. Being a member of the BCPVPA eNews/6

Board of Directors takes time, energy, and commitment, but I know it is an experience that Board members often say is among the most valuable professional development of their careers. This year, members will elect six members of the Board to two-year terms and one member to a one-year term. I hope you consider standing for election – or encouraging a Chapter colleague to stand. Over the next two years, I look forward to connecting with as many members as possible through Chapter visits and informal opportunities. I invite your comments, suggestions and feedback. Feel free to email me anytime ([email protected]). Have a great weekend, Kevin

Planning Ahead April

From you have I been absent in the spring, When proud-pied April, dressed in all his trim, Hath put a spirit of youth in everything, That heavy Saturn laughed and leaped with him. Yet nor the lays of birds, nor the sweet smell Of different flowers in odour and in hue, Could make me any summer’s story tell, Or from their proud lap pluck them where they grew: Nor did I wonder at the lily’s white, Nor praise the deep vermilion in the rose; They were but sweet, but figures of delight Drawn after you, – you pattern of all those. Yet seem’d it winter still, and, you away, As with your shadow I with these did play.
