Valve world americas expo & Conference 2017 th st june 20 to 21 , 2017

GEORGE R. BROWN CONVENTION CENTER HOUSTON, TX, USA A Word from the Chairman…

It is my pleasure to take up the role of Chairman for the 2017 Valve World Americas Expo & Conference. As a member of the Steering Committee for a number of years, I am proud to participate in the organization of an event that I believe to be an outstanding platform and a great resource to the valve industry. The Valve World Americas Expo & Conference is an important event for people across a variety of industries including oil & gas, chemical & petrochemical, and power generation – among many others – to network, share knowledge and learn something new. From my professional perspective the Valve World Americas Conference provides an opportunity for people from all sides of the flow control industry to come together to discuss experiences, share insights and work together to resolve common challenges. Sharing knowledge and networking between professionals is essential to gain benefits from the latest news within the industry and to help ignite and inspire interest in the industry. It is more important than ever to bring together the community of end users, EPCs, consultants and valve manufacturers and distributors to discuss and learn about the latest news regarding fugitive emissions, material selection, new technological developments and so much more. The Valve World Americas Expo & Conference is an excellent arena for this. It provides an overview of the latest advances taking place while maintaining a strong application focus. As an end user, one of my professional interests is inspiring young engineers to develop expertise in the area of valve technology. What aspects of valve technology have inspired our experts of today early in their careers? From my own experience, I believe this is where seasoned engineers can contribute greatly to improve the awareness of the challenges and inspire others to pursue this vocation to assure our capabilities into the future, so this is definitely one area that I would like to see on the table during the Conference. What makes the Valve World Americas Conference so valuable is that it is a genuine open platform where everyone is welcome and encouraged to share their own experiences with valves, sealing, control valves, actuators, etc. If you have an idea or a topic that you would like to see discussed, please contact us. Consider presenting your work to your peers. Delivering a paper is not only hugely rewarding, but also a way to initiate discussion and help drive industry forward. Send a short abstract for the Steering Committee to review! Along with the 2017 Valve World Americas Steering Committee, I look forward to reading your abstracts and presenting you with an informative yet practical conference program that will challenge you to learn more about the important role that valves play in numerous applications. I am looking forward to a great conference ahead and I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as your Chairman. See you at Valve World Americas Expo & Conference 2017 in Houston! Sincerely yours, Bill Patrick Piping Global Improvement Leader – Engineering Solutions The Dow Chemical Company

Be part of the 2017 Valve World Americas Conference!

The 2017 Valve World Americas Conference Steering Committee encourages presentations to be made at the event on a wide variety of topics related to valves, actuators and the flow control industry. Experts from all aspects of the manufacture, specification and application of valves are invited to submit an abstract for either a paper or a detailed presentation that the Chairman and Steering Committee Members will review and consider for acceptance.

Present a Paper or Presentation

Valve experts are invited to submit an abstract for either a formal paper or a detailed PowerPoint presentation that they would like to present during the conference. Workshops will be centered around one theme or topic with panelists giving presentations or presenting formal papers related to that theme. Following the presentations, attendees will be invited to pose questions and audience interaction is encouraged. If you have attended one of the previous Valve World Americas Conferences, you know that discussions and the free exchange of ideas and experiences are an integral part of the conference experience. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring their ideas, experiences and valve related questions to the panel of industry experts. If you would like to present a paper or presentation during the conference, you must submit a 300-500 word abstract outlining the material you would like to cover to Sarah Bradley ([email protected]) . The abstract will be reviewed by the Chairman and Steering Committee and you will receive an email confirmation by November 30th, 2016 if it has been accepted.

Plenary Presentation

Plenary presentations are generally technical presentations covering practical valve applications or addressing overall issues that affect the industry. End-users are particularly encouraged to come forward to give plenary presentations. If you are interested in presenting a plenary presentation during the 2017 Valve World Americas Conference, please submit your 300500 word abstract/outline of your presentation to Sarah Bradley ([email protected]). Your outline will then be reviewed by the Chairman and Steering Committee and you will receive an email confirmation by November 30th, 2016 if it has been accepted.

Dates to Remember Abstract submission deadline: September 30th, 2016 Notification of acceptance: November 30th ,2016

Helpful Hints for a Fantastic PowerPoint Presentation Minimize the number slides This helps present a clear message and keeps your audience attentive and interested. Should your abstract be selected, the conference coordinator will provide a background slide to use for your PowerPoing presentation.

Choose an appropriate font style and size It’s important to ensure your audience can read the text from a distance. Select an easy-to-read font style such as Helvetica or Arial. Also, using dark text on a light background works best.

Keep your text simple Use bullet points or short sentences and try to keep each to one line. This way your audience will listen to your presentation rather than read your PowerPoint slide. Think of your slides as reinforcing what you are saying.

Have a hook Just like your English high school teacher always said, the best writing, and in this case, the best presentations, catch their audiences’ attention early and reel them in. Open your presentation with something surprising or intriguing that will get your audience to sit up and take notice.

Write a script The purpose of your slides is to illustrate and expand what you are going to say. It’s always a good idea to write out, or at least prepare an outline, of your presentation before putting together your slides.

Face your audience Ensure that you aren’t standing with your back to your audience and reading directly from the screen. If you do, your audience may become bored and stop listening to what you are trying to say.

Ask questions Questions are a good way of arousing interest, piquing curiosity and engaging audiences. Build tension by asking a question and letting your audience think about it for a minute, before you move onto your next slide (which will probably contain the answer). Engage in a little questionand-answer with your audience with you asking the questions. Interaction is key to a great presentation!

Possible Presentation Topics The 2017 Valve World Americas Conference aims to cover a wide variety of applications for the specification, manufacturer and use of valves, actuators and components related to the flow control industry. Some possible topics for presentations include, but are certainly not limited to, the following: • Avoiding failures • Case study applications • Castings and forgings • Chemical and petrochemical applications • Corrosion • End-user requirements • Fugitive emissions • Control valves • Performance & validation • Cryogenic applications • Design variables • Material selection • Valve testing & standards

• Severe Service applications • Automation & actuation • HIPPS • Safety • Packing & sealing • Best practices • Maintenance • High or low temperature environments • New technologies • Oil & gas applications (onshore and offshore) • Power generation applications • Research projects
