Dublin City Council Presents

BEALTAINE 2015

Lord Mayor of Dublin’s Welcome Dubliners! Come out and celebrate Bealtaine with us this May. Taking its name from the ancient Celtic festival celebrating springtime, Bealtaine celebrates renewal, creativity and growth in ageing. Dublin City Council is proud to celebrate Bealtaine and brings together an impressive and exciting programme of events which includes art, dance, music, film, theatre, literature and history. This programme of events is brought to you by the staff of the City Council’s Arts Office, Parks Department, Community Department, Sports and Recreation Department, Dublin City Public Libraries, Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane and the Mansion House in conjunction with active members of our communities throughout our city. There is a great range of events happening right across the city during May. In 2015 the Mansion House celebrates 300 years as the official residence of the Lord Mayor. To celebrate we are holding two Bealtaine events. We are working with Dublin City Public Libraries who are bringing their Memory Bus to the forecourt. We want you to share your memories of the Mansion House over the years with us and bring photos, memorabilia and memories for recording on 23rd and 27th May. The House will also be open for people to walk through and have a look at the public rooms. We also welcome the Rialto F2 Stitch and Bitch group who will be knitting a Dublin cityscape in the Mansion House on 19th and 20th May. Elsewhere there is a community gardening project in Flanagan’s Fields where artist Christine Mackey explores our relationship with the land and it’s soil, a sketching tour in the Hugh Lane Gallery and craft workshops in our cities libraries. Come to our contemporary art gallery, The LAB on 16th May in Foley Street to participate in National Drawing Day. There is a series of events for music enthusiasts in the Central Library, ILAC Centre during May including a music therapy workshop and a lunchtime concert by The Blue Heaven Barbershop Chorus.

One of the highlights of Bealtaine is the FEAST ON DANCE, brought to you in partnership with CoisCéim Broadreach. Participate in many of the dance events throughout the city and enjoy the final performances in City Hall on 28th May. Come out and dance to some great music, including renowned folk-singer John Spillane, and show how older people celebrate in Dublin this Bealtaine. Even if you don’t participate directly, come out and support as a spectator many of the lively and engaging events of Bealtaine 2015 in Dublin City. Thank you to the staff of the City Council and Age and Opportunity, who co-ordinate Bealtaine, on the work in bringing this Festival to Dublin. I wish to thank all those involved for their commitment to making Bealtaine a great festival for older people and people of all ages in our city.

Christy Burke Lord Mayor of Dublin

Dublin City Council would like to extend our thanks to Age and Opportunity, Access Cinema, Cabra CDP, Diageo, Nascadh CDP, the National Concert Hall and all of the performers, facilitators and host venues. Without these partners, it would not be possible to deliver this festival of events. Feedback and Consultation We are keen to hear from individuals and groups who attend and/or participate in Dublin City Council’s Bealtaine programme. We would love your feedback, input and suggestions going forward. Please contact Niamh Fitzpatrick on T. 883 2123, or email [email protected] if you would like to be involved in giving feedback and being consulted in our future programming for older people across Dublin city.

Of Land and Soil Artist Christine Mackey reminds us that our relationship to the ‘natural’ world can be formed in the humblest of ways. From the potted geranium that our grandmothers may have kept in the window ‘to keep those darn flies away’; to the digging spade used over countless seasons to turn soil made ready for planting seeds from the shared cuttings of house plants between friends; to the historic migration of seeds between people who made their lives elsewhere. Christine is developing a project in tandem with Flanagan’s Field, a community gardening project in Rialto managed by the Back of the Pipes Residents Association with the support of Dublin City Council. During the months of April and May, Christine will use these diverse and interconnected gardening activities in Flanagan’s Fields to generate a collective ‘forum’ whereby people can meet, talk, plant and discuss. ‘Of Land and Soil’, is an Age and Opportunity commission, in association with Dublin City Council Arts Office. Bathnight on Henrietta Street takes place on the 24th of July, 1969. And what’s so important you might ask? Is it the fact that man is going to be landing on the moon? Is it that all of Ireland is enthralled by their TV sets as man takes one massive leap into the unknown? Not a bit of it! It’s Bathnight on Henrietta Street and that’s as big as man landing on the moon any day! There’s the water that has to be lugged up the four flights of stairs, then heated. Ella Young and Her World: Celtic Mythology, the Irish

Revival and the Californian Avant-Garde. By Dorothea McDowell There were many creative women – so called privileged, mostly Protestant women in the period 1860s to 1950s – who have been barely researched or written about. Ella Young was one of them - mystic, folklorist and poet.

LITERATURE

It was an exciting and dangerous time to be living during Ella’s time in Dublin (1890-1925) when Ireland was fighting for her independence. She immersed herself in idealistic and mystical dreams amongst the literary and political circles of her contempories, W. B. Yeats, George Moore and J.M.Synge. She, however, risked her own freedom daringly hiding guns for the freedom fighters, the boys as she called them, in attics and secret rooms of the houses in which she lived. She emigrated to the United States in 1925 and went on to have a dramatically different life in California which lasted over 30 years until her death. She lectured at the University of California, Berkeley, and her knowledge and enthusiasm for Celtic mythology won her a wide audience among writers and artists in California. Dorothea McDowell’s book Ella Young and Her World, is published by Academica Press (2014) Date Venue

The Romance of the Desert with Mary Russell It’s time to swoon and sigh as Mary Russell reveals the love-life of three women who abandoned themselves to the romance of the desert. Margaret Fountaine, a prim Victorian thirtysomething, set off for the deserts of Syria in search of butterflies but found herself overwhelmed by her amorous guide. He was 24 and she 37. “He folded me in his arms and carried me across the room….” Hester Stanhope, grieving for her lost love who was killed at Corunna in 1809, she travelled to Lebanon. When shipwrecked, and having to buy a new set of clothes, she cast aside her female attire and dressed as an Arab sheikh for the rest of her life, complete with turban and dagger. And the greatest of them all, Lady Jane Digby – a scandalous woman if ever there was one – found true love in Medjuel, an unbearably handsome and chivalrous sheikh of the Syrian desert. “A letter from Medjuel”, she breathed, “and that he was coming in a few hours..I nearly fainted.” Eat your heart out Mills and Boon, these three women found themselves, in real life, drawn to the mystery of the hot deserts of the Middle East. Mary Russell, herself no stranger to the call of the desert, talks about these lovestruck women and describes the house in Damascus where Lady Jane Digby entertained her wild, desert sheikh. International Literature Festival Dublin Only Himself: A Tribute to Dermot Healy with Martin Hayes, Neil Jordan, Patrick McCabe and Timothy O’Grady Quotes [Dermot Healy] speaks out of a world I never knew existed ... I don’t know how he makes this world mythical, but he does. Neil Jordan When a young Dermot Healy sent some poems to Seamus Heaney, he soon received a phone call in reply. ‘Do you know how good you are?’ Heaney asked, before publishing them all. Over the next thirty years, Healy amassed an astonishing body of work celebrated for its unique voice and style: thirteen plays, five collections of poetry, an acclaimed memoir, The Bend for Home, and five novels, including A Goat’s Song, often cited as “one of the great Irish novels of recent times” (The Guardian). In this special tribute, Timothy O’Grady in collaboration with ILF Dublin gathers leading writers, Patrick McCabe, Neil Jordan, Anne Haverty, Roddy Doyle, Kevin Barry and Anthony Cronin – to reflect on one of the most original voices in Irish writing. Featuring music from Martin Hayes and friends, Only Himself is a unique celebration of the writer’s life and work. Devised and facilitated by Aoife Giles, this project will get participants thinking about the process of storytelling and filmmaking by creating their own “micro movies” from photographs and their own script. Digital storytelling combines the pleasures of learning, selfexpression, reflection and creativity with the practical skills needed to use digital technology and the internet. Participants can develop, explore and record their own stories about something ‘close to their hearts’. Some experience using computers is a bonus, but is not a requirement and all are welcome to join us. Brought to you by Dublin City Council Arts Office.
