The Weekend takes you on a voyage of exploring the ancient land of Syria and its people through a photographic exhibition, amid reports that Palmyra, which is one of the ancient cities in the country and known as the 'City of Palms', is enjoying some moments of peace following its liberation. The world today joins the Syrians in their jubilation. This was very much evident from the words of Irina Bokova, Director-General of Unesco, as she said, “Palmyra carries the memories of Syrian people, and values of cultural diversity, tolerance and openness that have made this region a cradle of civilization." For over a year, Palmyra and its priceless heritage have been a symbol of cultural destruction. On this background is the exhibition by Syrian artist Fadi Masri Zada titled, Syria, In the Shadows of Memory, which takes you to scenes of life – present and old — in this land of top tourist attraction. Through the distinctive style of Fadi’s shots, and deep allusions to aesthetics and humanity, photography enthusiasts are transported to the hearts of Palmyra to the archeological sites in Busra, Aleppo and Old Damascus. At the exhibition, one can witness the anatomy of places, experience the vastness of history and warmth of the present. This is the special report the magazine has in its pages for you. Who in the Sultanate does not know Zeena al Towayya, the ƢUVW2PDQLZRPDQWRH[SORUHWKH$QWDUFWLFDLQ"7KH:HHNHQGFDXJKWXSZLWK=HHQDDWKHUERXWLTXHLQ Mabila, Seeb. She shares her experiences not only from her Antarctic Expedition, but also from her present business of selling handmade gifts made from eco-friendly recycled material. The resilience with which the Qurum Beach Road has bounced back with a vengeance is a story told of the resourceful and enterprising nature of the nation and the citizens as well as all those behind making this stretch the most happening place in the capital. This is another report from the long -up of topics included in the Weekend to make your reading enjoyable. With warm regards

Weekend Special

Syria:

In the Shadows of Memory That’s what Fadi Masri Zada wanted his photographs to be, a testament and a beacon of hope. An agonizing jab into the blurry face of tomorrow. A wishful thinking — no, a firm, optimistic belief that what once was, will be again. He is looking forward to a future that was like the past — past being a time when Syria enjoyed peace.
