Best Practice Guidelines for Diabetes Camps Albuquerque Convention Center February 19th, 2017: 12:00pm – 8:30pm February 20th, 2017: 8:30am – 6:30pm
Educational Gap: The fundamental components of diabetes care differ in the camp setting from home or clinic and must be understood for safe provision of healthcare. Learners will apply best practice methods of diabetes management for youth with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in the camp setting consistent with guidelines co‐developed by the Diabetes Education and Camping Association and the American Diabetes Association. The guidelines address insulin management and administration; healthy eating in the camp setting; blood glucose monitoring and continuous glucose monitoring; exercise; sick day management and diabetes technology in the camp setting. Target Audience: Physicians, physician assistants, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, nurse practitioners specializing in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine (including IM Specialties), Pediatrics, Adolescent Medicine, Endocrinology, Diabetes, & Metabolism
Learning Objectives and Competencies: As a result of participating in this activity, the learner should be able to… Identify the unique diabetes management needs of youth with type 1 diabetes at camping programs. Describe best practice guidelines at diabetes camp as they relate to blood glucose monitoring, insulin administration and adjustment, nutrition management, exercise and emotional support List key elements of the provision of health services in the camp setting that meet local, state & federal requirements Identify their unique roles and responsibilities on the health care team Demonstrate an understanding of best practice standards for diabetes camps as they relate to providing general healthcare and diabetes management tasks such as blood glucose monitoring, insulin adjustment & administration, nutrition management, emotional support and the use of diabetes technology Perform healthcare duties at diabetes camp that ensure safe participation of campers and staff in diabetes management best practice standards Learning objectives apply to all professions in the target audience.
