Big Sur Half Marathon continues to GO GREEN! The Big Sur Half Marathon is working to achieve Council for Responsible Sport GOLD certification for the 3rd year in a row. You can help by recycling or composting in the proper receptacle here at the expo and Sunday, during and after the event. Thank you for helping us make this happen. BYOB is the way to go. Participation is optional, but strongly encouraged, particularly for walking participants. By using your own bottle and refilling it at an aid station you reduce the number of cups needed on the course and you are assured of better hydration and refueling. Refilling stations will have both water and Gatorade available. Please have lids off and be ready for your refill at the last table at the aid station. The BYOB fill-up station will be located at the Half Marathon turn around just past Asilomar Beach (approximate mile 7.75). 

If you abandon clothing on the course it will be donated to charity. Same goes for leftover food. In fact, the Marathon works with local agencies to reuse or recycle most materials after the Marathon.

Hydrate wisely, but please don’t waste water. Water is a scarce resource here on the Monterey Peninsula so we appreciate your efforts to conserve it by taking shorter showers and not wasting. 

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle: We hear that more and more and BSIM is taking it seriously. We will have Green Zone recycling stations at the Start of each event and the Finish area. Thanks for helping us make this a success. 

We are reducing the carbon footprint of our event this weekend. Did you also know that the Marathon has purchased 100% renewable energy to offset all the emissions from the Half Marathon. Check out our Green Tag program on our website. Now you can offset your travel emissions and feel good that you have done your part. 

 Please visit our demonstration GREEN ZONE RECYCLING stations at the Expo. You will see that you have the opportunity to make a choice about where to throw away your leftover food, recycle your water cups and plastic bottles and dispose of trash. You can make a better choice if you will only take a moment to think about it. Thanks!

Did you know that the Marathon has replaced most of the cars along the course with bicycles. This effort eliminates 34 cars from traveling up and down the course. That is equivalent to planting 10 trees.

 We are working with The Offset Project and the Council for Responsible Sport to make our sport greener than it is. Ask one of the volunteers at our Green Zone Recycling Centers for information about how you can help.  Did you know that last year, the Half Marathon recycled or composted over 85% of their waste materials? We will have all compostable cups (140K+) and service ware on the course and in our food tent this Sunday. Please place these items in the proper bins when you are finished.

Heat Sheets are now recyclable. If you are given a heat sheet at the end of the race, please bring it to a Green Zone Recycling station for proper disposal. You can also recycle your plastic sweat bag at the Sweats location.

 In partnership with Save Your Sole, the Marathon is collecting gently used shoes to donate to a local homeless shelter, Dorothy's Place. Please visit the Marathon’s Green booth at the Expo to look for the donation barrel. At the finish, there will be a donation barrel at the award's stage and near the food tent.

Have you ever thought about the term “landfill?” It means filling up the land. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Compost. It’s a better way.

We are providing you with a Virtual Goodie Bag and a Virtual Race Results Book. This reduces printing and still provides the information you want. 

Our Finisher Medallions are made of clay by our longtime Artist, Kathleen Kelly. This is a natural and unique memory of your accomplishment. Kathleen has made medallions for our events for the past 26 years. 

All of our volunteer groups are from the local community. We give approximately $200k to our groups each year and over the 26 years we have given over $3 million back to our community.

Our volunteers clean the entire course both before and after the event. Please help them by throwing your cups into a compostable container and making sure you put your used energy gel packets into one of the containers provided at an aid station. GU packets stuck on the road are difficult to get off and we appreciate your efforts to dispose of them properly. If you are carrying your own energy gels and use them between stations, please keep them in a sticky pocket in your running shorts until you can dispose of them properly. We thank you in advance for your consideration! 

When you are done with the race, look for our D Tag recycling. D-tags will be collected at the finish in and the sweats area and sent back to Chronotrack for recycling. 

 Rock the Bike will be “pedal powering” the awards stage. If you’re not too tired after the race you can pedal power too!
