are first and foremost, a Roman Catholic Seminary, and as such, our focus will continue to be forming young men to provide solid spiritual and temporal leadership in the Church.” A member of the Saint Vincent Seminary Board of Regents since 1999, Dr. Maher is Provost Emeritus of the University of Pittsburgh. He is also Professor of Physics and Astronomy, and Senior Science Advisor. He served as Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor from July 1, 1994, to August 15, 2010, and has been a member of the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh for forty years. Dr. Maher earned his bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Notre Dame in 1964. He earned his master’s and doctoral degrees from Yale University in 1965 and 1969, respectively. Prior to joining the University of Pittsburgh faculty as an assistant professor in September 1970, Dr. Maher served as a post-doctoral research associate in the Physics Division of the Argonne National Laboratory in Argonne, Illinois. During his tenure at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Maher has served as director of the University’s Scaife Nuclear Physics Laboratory, as a longstanding resident fellow in the University’s Center for the Philosophy of Science, and as a visiting scientist at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, the Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut in Groningen, the College de France in Paris, and the Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago. Elected a fellow of both the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Maher has published numerous papers in refereed journals on the fields of nuclear physics (up through 1980) and statistical condensed matter physics (since 1980). Dr. Maher is a member of the Board of Trustees’ Information Technology Committee at the University’s partner institution, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and serves on numerous national and local professional society committees and boards, including the Carnegie Science Center Board of Directors, and the Board of Directors of BioOne. He was chair of the Council of Academic Affairs of the Association of Public and Landgrant Universities and was a member of the Association of American University’s (AAU) Intellectual Property Task Force. He served on the AAU/ National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges (NASULGC) Task Force on Accreditation. He was invited by the AAU and Association of Research Libraries to participate in writing the Tempe Principles on Scholarly Communications, a set of principles designed to guide the transformation of the scholarly publishing system.

Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Mr. John C. Marous, Jr., To Be Honored Saint Vincent Seminary will honor two outstanding members of its Board of Regents at its forthcoming Alumni Day Mass and Banquet, scheduled for Monday, September 19, 2011. Tribute will be paid to His Eminence Donald Cardinal Wuerl, a member of the Board of Regents for 24 years, and Dr. John C. Marous, Jr., retired chairman of the Seminary’s Board of Regents and a member for 20 years. Cardinal Donald Wuerl, the Archbishop of Washington, was elevated to the College of Cardinals in 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI. During his 24 years on the Seminary Board of Regents, Cardinal Wuerl was a stalwart supporter of the Seminary. He was active in helping to recruit seminarians and was especially helpful in keeping the Seminary administration and faculty alert to expanding requirements for the priestly formation program. Cardinal Wuerl is known nationally for his catechetical and teaching ministry and for his efforts on behalf of Catholic education. He serves on numerous national and international boards and is chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, chancellor of The Catholic University of America, chairman of the board of the Pope John Paul II Cultural Foundation and also of The Papal Foundation. He is chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Doctrine and a member of the USCCB Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis. Cardinal Wuerl has written numerous articles and books, including the best-selling catechisms, The Teaching of Christ and The Catholic Way. His most recent book, The Mass, was published in January 2011. In April 2008 Cardinal

for 17 years and as a member of the board for 20 years. Significant advances were made in every aspect of the Seminary under the leadership of Mr. Marous. He led three major capital campaigns to provide the Seminary with additional space for worship with the Saint Gregory Chapel, administrative offices, additional housing, and academic programs, including the Pope Benedict XVI Chair of Biblical Theology and Homiletics for Excellence in Preaching, and the Pastoral Stewardship program. Those campaigns also helped provide state-of-the-art technology for the newly renovated classrooms in the John and Annette Brownfield Center. Prior to being elected Chairman of the Board of Regents, Mr. Marous served as chairman and chief executive officer of Westinghouse, president of the corporation’s Industries and International Group, which included businesses involved globally in the development, manufacture and marketing of a wide variety of electrical and

Wuerl hosted His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI in Washington, D.C., on the Holy Father’s historic journey to the United States. The Cardinal is active in the community, joining with civic and business leaders to promote education, service to the poor, pastoral assistance to refugees and immigrants and interfaith understanding. The Cardinal was born in Pittsburgh, and received graduate degrees from The Catholic University of America, the Gregorian University, and a doctorate in theology from the University of Saint Thomas in Rome. He was ordained to the priesthood on December 17, 1966, and ordained a bishop by Pope John Paul II on January 6, 1986 in Saint Peter’s Basilica, Rome. He served as Auxiliary Bishop in Seattle until 1987 and then as Bishop of Pittsburgh for 18 years until his appointment to Washington. Mr. John C. Marous, Jr. Mr. Marous served as chairman of the Board of Regents 3

Following service in the U.S. Army, Mr. Marous earned bachelor and master of science degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He was awarded an honorary doctor of engineering degree by the University of South Carolina in December 1988; an honorary doctor of public service degree from South Carolina State college in May 1989; and an honorary doctor of letters degree from Clemson University in December 1989. He received an honorary doctorate from Saint Vincent Seminary in 1996. Both Mr. Marous and Cardinal Wuerl have been involved with the Extra Mile Education Foundation, which supports the education of children from economically disadvantaged neighborhoods in select Pittsburgh parochial schools. The students are pirmarily African American and non-Catholic. John and his wife Lucine reside in Fox Chapel.

In 1982 Bishop Bartchak was appointed part-time Defender of the Bond, and in 1986 he was assigned full-time to the Tribunal of the Diocese of Erie. During his time in Washington, Bishop Bartchak assisted as a confessor at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. In 1992 Bishop Bartchak was appointed by Bishop Donald W. Trautman as Judicial Vicar and Director of the Office of Conciliation and Arbitration of the Diocese of Erie. In addition to these duties, he was named Vicar for Canonical Affairs of the Diocese of Erie in 2004. In the Diocese of Erie, Bishop Bartchak has been an exofficio member of the presbyteral council, the administrative cabinet and various diocesan committees. He served on the planning committee for the establishment of the permanent diaconate formation program of the Diocese of Erie. He has been a confessor and spiritual director for Project Rachel at Catholic Charities Counseling Services of the Diocese of Erie, and chaplain to the Saint Thomas More Society in Erie. He has also been a spiritual director at Saint

Most Rev. Mark L. Bartchak Bishop of Altoona-Johnstown Monsignor Mark L. Bartchak was appointed the eighth bishop of the Diocese of AltoonaJohnstown by Pope Benedict XVI on January 14. A priest of the Diocese of Erie, Bishop Bartchak was ordained and installed on April 19 at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Altoona. A native of Cleveland, he attended Saint Mark Seminary and Gannon University in Erie, Christ the King Seminary in New York, and The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., where he received a licentiate degree in 1989 and a doctorate in 1992 in canon law. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Erie on May 15, 1981, by the late Bishop Michael J. Murphy at Saint Peter Cathedral, Erie. In 2000 he received papal honors from Pope John Paul II with the title of Chaplain to His Holiness. Immediately after ordination

to the priesthood, Bishop Bartchak was assigned as temporary parochial vicar at Saint Joseph Parish, Warren. In August 1981 he was assigned as parochial vicar at Saint Francis Parish, Clearfield. He was also assistant principal and theology teacher at Saint Francis High School, and part-time chaplain at the Clearfield Hospital. He was transferred to Saint Leo Magnus Parish, Ridgway, to serve as administrator of the parish for several months when the pastor became ill. He was then appointed parochial vicar at Saint Leo Magnus Parish. His duties included pastoral care at the Elk County General Hospital and the Elk County Prison. In these early parish assignments he was active in local ecumenical clergy associations. He was a speaker at ecumenical and civic gatherings. He gave retreats for Catholic schools in Elk County

Mark Seminary, Erie since 1991. For the past several years he has celebrated Mass each month at Erie County Prison. He has also been a confessor at the Catholic chapel at Millcreek Mall, the largest retail shopping center in northwestern Pennsylvania. He is a member of the Board of Corporators of Saint Vincent Health System in Erie. In addition to his duties in the Diocese of Erie, Bishop Bartchak has been involved in various roles in the Church on the state, national and international level. In 2004 he was appointed to the Administrative Board and the Executive Committee of the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference. In 2007 he was appointed as a consultant for the USCCB Committee on Canonical Affairs and Church Governance. Bishop Bartchak has served as canonical consultant for a number of bishops, dioceses, seminaries, and religious institutes. Besides his doctoral dissertation, which examines canonical issues concerning spiritual formation in diocesan seminaries, he has published articles on canon law topics in various journals. He has given lectures at the faculties of canon law of The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC, The Catholic University of Lublin, Poland, and Saint Paul University, Ottawa, Canada. He has conducted seminars and workshops for canon lawyers in the United States, and for civil attorneys of the Erie County Bar Association. For the past several years he has been a member of the teaching faculty of the Institute on Matrimonial Tribunal Practice held each summer at The Catholic University of America, and he has taught (Continued on Page 7)

Retiring Bishop Joseph V. Adamec of the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown has served in that capacity for nearly 24 years, time to have established a very strong relationship with Saint Vincent Seminary. During his tenure, he has had the opportunity to visit numerous times, for special events, and to preside at Mass for seminarians’ during various periods of their formation, such as ministry of acolyte, ministry of reader and admittance to candidacy. “While he has sent many seminarians here, in the mid1990s, three seminarians, from Bishop Adamec’s native country, Slovakia, were sent here by the bishop,” said Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki, O.S.B., Chancellor. “Their presence in the Seminary evoked a great deal of interest in their Slovak culture and heritage, and it reminded us of the role Saint Vincent has had in the development of Slovak-American culture and history for more than a century.” Those men were ordained priests in 1998 by Bishop Adamec. Archabbot Douglas joined Bishop Adamec and a group of pilgrims from the

There he studied for six years, earning a Licentiate in Sacred Theology at the Pontifical Lateran University. He was ordained by Aloysius Cardinal Traglia in the Church of Saint Anselm in Rome on July 3, 1960, for the former diocese of his parents, the Diocese of Nitra in Slovakia. Following the completion of his studies, Father Adamec returned to Michigan where he served his home diocese of Saginaw in various capacities. After serving as assistant pastor in three different parishes, he became a notary of the Diocese of Saginaw under Bishop Stephen S. Woznicki in 1965, fulfilling responsibilities of assistant Chancellor, secretary to the Bishop, and Master of Ceremonies. Bishop Francis F. Reh appointed him secretary to the Bishop and Master of Ceremonies in 1969. Two and one half years later, he became Chancellor of the diocese, a position he held for six years. In 1977, he was appointed pastor of Saint Hyacinth Church in Bay City, Michigan, and in 1984 assumed the pastorate of Saints Peter and Paul Parish in

Saginaw. In 1980 he was the recipient of the “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice” medal in recognition of service to the Church and Pope. The Holy Father named him a Prelate of Honor with the title of Monsignor in 1985. Bishop Adamec was elected National President of the Slovak Catholic Federation by the Slovak Catholic community of the United States and Canada in 1971, which position he held for 17 years. He is also a member of the Slovak League of America and is a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. The Bishop is a former member of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee for Aid to the Church in Central and Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union and served as a member of its Joint Committee of Orthodox and Roman Catholic Bishops. Bishop Adamec is fluent in three languages: English, Slovak, and Italian. Flowing from his motto “The Household of God”, Bishop Adamec has focused on establishing a sense of community within the Diocesan Church. The Diocese of AltoonaJohnstown is one of eight Latin Rite dioceses in the Philadelphia Ecclesial Province, comprised of eight counties covering 6,674 square miles with a total population of over 650,000, 20 percent of whom are Roman Catholics. After being named to succeed Bishop Adamec, Bishop Mark L. Bartchak noted that Bishop Adamec had the “distinction of having served this diocese for 24 years, the longest of any of the Bishops of the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown.... I am sure that God will reward Bishop Adamec for his service as Priest and Bishop.”

Very Reverend William J. Waltersheid was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Pittsburgh by Pope Benedict XVI on February 25. Bishop Waltersheid was ordained on April 25 at Saint Paul Cathedral in Oakland. He most recently served the Diocese of Harrisburg as Diocesan Secretary for Clergy and Consecrated Life. He has been a priest of the Diocese of Harrisburg for nearly 19 years. “I am profoundly humbled by my appointment as auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Pittsburgh by Pope Benedict XVI and I offer my heartfelt thanks to our Holy Father for his confidence in me,” said Bishop Waltersheid. “I am overjoyed to have the opportunity to serve the people of God in Pittsburgh with whom already I feel a great bond. I am very excited to follow the wonderful pastoral vision of Bishop Zubik, whose dedicated and effective ministry as a priest and a bishop speaks for itself. I look forward to getting to know Bishop Winter and benefiting from his vision. “I know that the people of the Diocese of Pittsburgh possess a deep and abiding faith, and I am looking forward very much to sharing that faith with them.” “Father Waltersheid is an outstanding priest who has served this diocese in an examplary fashion,” Bishop Joseph P. McFadden of Harrisburg said. “While we are sad that he will no longer be serving in the Church in Harrisburg, we know he will be a great asset to the work of proclaiming the Gospel in the Lord’s vineyard in the Western part of our state.” Bishop McFadden noted that “The Diocese of Pittsburgh gave a significant gift to ... the Church of Harrisburg. With the recent appointment by His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, the Diocese of Harrisburg now reciprocates that gift.” A native of Ashland, Pa., Bishop Waltersheid was educated in the Mount Carmel Area School System. After graduating from high school in 1974, he worked in the health care field. He graduated from the Pottsville Hospital School of Nursing in 1983. He was very active in his home parish of Saint Joseph in Locust Gap and taught religious education classes in neighboring parishes. In 1985 he entered the seminary for the Diocese of Harrisburg, studying at Saint John Seminary College in Brighton, Massachusetts. He earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts with a concentration in philosophy and classical languages. In 1988, Bishop William H. Keeler sent him to the Pontifical North American College in Rome for continued formation. He received a bachelor’s degree in theology from the Pontifical

Gregorian University and a licentitate in dogmatic theology from that same university. He was ordained a deacon in Rome on April 30, 1992, by Pio Cardinal Laghi and was ordained a priest by Bishop Dattilo on July 11, 1992 in Harrisburg. He remained in Rome for further studies until 1995, when he returned to the diocese. He worked as parochial vicar at Prince of Peace Parish, Steelton until his return to Rome in 1999. Then, he served for four years on the faculty of the Pontifical North American College, where for one year he was Director of Apostolic Works and for three years he was vice rector. In June of 2003 he was appointed pastor of Saint Patrick Parish in Carlisle. Bishop Kevin Rhoades appointed him to serve as Diocesan Secretary for Clergy and Consecrated Life in 2006. During his tenure in Harrisburg, Bishop Waltersheid served on the following diocesan boards: Presbyteral Council, Priests’ Personnel Board, Deacons’ Council, Sisters’ Council, Priests’ Retirement and Benefits Board, Priests’ Continuing Formation Committee 6

(all from 2006-2011); Censor librorum of the Diocese of Harrisburg (1998-2011). Bishop Waltersheid has served on the Board of Directors of Holy Spirit Hospital, the Comfort Care of Holy Spirit Health System (all from 2006-2011), and on the Apostolic Visitation of Seminaries Board in 2006. “I can sincerely say that I have loved every day of my priesthood,” said Bishop Waltersheid, “and now with great confidence in the mercy and love of Our Lord Jesus Christ I humbly take the next step of embracing the good people of the Church of Pittsburgh. I place all under the powerful maternal protection of Mary Immaculate, Mother of God, Mother of the Church, and Mother of us all. To her I owe all. I beg you all to unite your prayers with Our Lady’s that I may serve God and His Church that I so love.” Bishop Waltersheid was recently appointed as episcopal vicar for clergy and secretary for clergy of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, with residence at Epiphany Parish, Uptown.

By Father Edward Mazich, O.S.B. Father Patrick E. Egan, O.S.B., is a monk of St. Bernard Abbey in Cullman, Alabama, and a 2008 graduate of Saint Vincent Seminary. He earned the Master of Divinity degree and also received the Father Omer U. Kline, O.S.B., Award for Excellence in Homiletics. A career Army officer, Father Patrick entered Benedictine life following 30 years of honorable service to his country. Since his ordination Father Patrick has been assigned to Sacred Heart Parish in Cullman, which is one of the oldest Catholic communities in Alabama, and which has been in the care of Benedictine monks since 1888. After serving for a year as the assistant at Sacred Heart under the direction of Father Kevin McGrath, O.S.B.—who is now Prior of Saint Bernard Abbey—Father Patrick was appointed pastor of the church in the summer of 2009, and has been busy ever since. Although Father Patrick, like all of his predecessors at Sacred Heart, has brought many fine

He has always had a great love for parish ministry. When he returned from his canon law studies, Bishop Trautman approved his request for residence in a center-city parish. Bishop Bartchak was in residence at Saint Stanislaus Parish in Erie for almost 20 years where he celebrated Mass each day. Bishop Bartchak is a member of the Knights of Columbus and has remained 7

quality preaching as a central instrument of religious formation and inspiration for most Catholics today. Father Patrick has put his Seminary education together with his own natural communication skills to bring the living Word ever more vibrantly into the lives of his parishioners. Appreciating the critical role which education plays in the faith formation of the coming generations of Catholics, Father Patrick has worked closely together with the teachers and administrators of Sacred Heart School to promote Catholic education in the parish. Recent increases in enrollment at Sacred Heart and the opening of a new pre-kindergarten program on Father Patrick’s watch point to the commitment which he and all of the members of the parish make to facilitate and sustain outstanding Catholic education at all ages. On another front, with the help of many of his fellow Cullman Catholics, Father Patrick extended an open invitation to any and all Catholics in the area or beyond who had fallen away from the faith to come back and

to find their home once more at Sacred Heart Church or in another Catholic congregation. Though it has taken time for this program to bear fruit, the initiative has by now brought back numerous Catholics who for various reasons had left the Church, but who were simply waiting for the right “moment” to rekindle their relationship with God and experience anew the joy of their Catholic faith. Though he is only three years into his priestly ministry Father Patrick has already made a positive impact on the lives of many Catholics in and around Cullman—and provides a fine example for the presentday students at Saint Vincent Seminary. The son of Mary I. Egan of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and the late Edward P. Egan, Jr., he is a 1967 graduate of Coffee High School, Florence, Alabama. I am certainly grateful for the insights and encouragement that he has shared since learning of my appointment as Bishop of Altoona-Johnstown. I am grateful to Bishop Joseph Adamec for the warm welcome and solicitude that he has shared with me in so many ways,” Bishop Bartchak said. “He has been quite generous in providing me with the kind of help that is needed during the time of transition.”

Saint Vincent Seminary held its annual Mardi Gras celebration on February 5 at the Fred Rogers Center. Seminarians participated in Mass, a talent show, and helped serve the meal. Part of the evening’s entertainment also included a raffle and basket auction. Chancellor’s Column Blessed John Paul II: A Remarkable Legacy

Dear Friends, On May 1, 2011, Pope John Paul II was beatified in Saint Peter’s Square in Rome. Serving as Pope from his election on October 16, 1978 through his death on April 2, 2011, Blessed John Paul II provided the Church with a remarkable legacy through his personal faith and his untiring commitment to extend the hope and love of Jesus Christ to all of the world. In addition to his witness to Christ and the inspiration he provided for all humanity as a “prophet of hope,” Blessed John Paul II was a remarkable model of priestly discipleship in the 21st century. Blessed John Paul was well aware of the challenges that the Church confronts in the world today. The powerful influence of materialism, secularism, individualism, along with the need for renewal within the Church itself as reflected in the sexual abuse scandal were but a few of the daily crosses he carried and worked to confront. Saint Vincent Seminary is grateful for the many ways in which Pope John Paul II inspired young people to pursue callings to the priesthood and religious life. The large number of young people who traveled to Rome to pay respects on the occasion of the death of their Chief Shepherd in 2005 reflected the deep affection which he engendered. Many of the seminarians and religious who entered our Seminary during the past 30 years speak of the great influence which Pope John Paul II had on their decision to enter the priesthood or religious life. His remarkable legacy continues through their ongoing service to the Church today. For the past 25 years Saint Vincent Seminary has also been blessed with the service of two outstanding members of the Board of Regents: Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl and Mr. John C. Marous, Jr. We will honor John C. Marous, Jr., who has been named Chairman Emeritus, and Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki, O.S.B., Chancellor His Eminence Donald Cardinal Wuerl at our forthcoming Alumni Day Mass and Banquet on Monday, September 19, 2011. Cardinal Wuerl has been a member of our Board of Regents for 24 years, and was active in helping recruit seminarians, and in keeping the administration and faculty of the Seminary aware of the expanding requirements for its priestly formation program. Under the leadership of Mr. Marous, Chairman of the Board of Regents, the Seminary had many major accomplishments, including construction of a new chapel (Saint Gregory Chapel), 21 additional student rooms (Elizabeth J. Roderick Center) and a newly-renovated state-of-the-art technology and classroom center (the John and Annette Brownfield Center). New academic programs included the Pastoral Stewardship Program, the Pope Benedict XVI Chair of Biblical Theology and Homiletics for Excellence in Preaching, and the Hispanic Ministries Program. We welcome Dr. James Maher as the new Chairman of our Board of Regents. Dr. Maher, the Provost Emeritus of the University of Pittsburgh, has served on the Board for 12 years. He served on the Planning Committee, the Executive and Membership Committee, and the Academic Affairs and Technology Committee. Saint Vincent Seminary also takes this opportunity to express its gratitude for the 24 years of episcopal ministry of Bishop Joseph Adamec to the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown. Bishop Joseph has been a faithful friend and dedicated supporter of our Seminary. We welcome his successor, Bishop Mark Bartchak, and look forward to his visit to Saint Vincent along with Bishop William Waltershied, the new Auxiliary Bishop of Pittsburgh. Saint Vincent Seminary is a Roman Catholic Seminary grounded in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the living tradition of the Church in accord with the Magisterium, and shaped by the Benedictine heritage of liturgical prayer, study, hospitality and community. As such, the Seminary is a center for the spiritual formation, human development, and academic and pastoral preparation of candidates for the priesthood. Chairman’s Column Seminary Continues to Build on Its Strengths Dear Alumni and Friends of Saint Vincent Seminary, As the recently elected Chairman of the Saint Vincent Seminary Board of Regents, I am honored to be of service to the Seminary in this capacity, having served as a member of the Board for 12 years. We all owe a debt of gratitude to my predecessor Mr. John C. Marous, Jr. who served as Chairman for 17 years and as a member of the Board for 20 years. Under his leadership, Saint Vincent Seminary has truly enhanced its role as a world-class educational institution serving the Church by training men who are very well grounded in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, as they are called to serve the Church as deacons, priests and pastors at a time when we need good and holy priests. Under the leadership of Chairman Marous, the Seminary has made major advances in its academic and pastoral training programs as well as in increased endowment and expanded physical facilities. Some of these advances include: • The establishment of the Pope Benedict XVI Chair of Biblical Theology and Homiletics for Excellence in Preaching •Granting of pontifical degrees in affiliation with the Dominican House of Studies (Washington, D.C.) • Creation of the Pastoral Stewardship Program • Association of Theological Schools and Middle States ten-year accreditation (2008-2018) • Hispanic Ministries program • Summer conferences for alumni priests and seminarians Dr. James V. We are first and foremost a Roman Catholic seminary. We continue to focus on the need for excellent preaching in our parishes. We will also continue to build on our strength of training men to serve in the growing Catholic Hispanic population in the United States, and in training of foreign seminarians to return to their home countries to serve there. Currently we have seminarians from Vietnam, China, Brazil, Puerto Rico and Nigeria. We are working diligently to integrate them into the seminary, yet respect the cultural differences that exist among and between these countries. Our past track record shows that they will be effective priests in their native lands, and we continue to welcome those from outside the United States. We are truly blessed to have the fine administration, faculty and staff that support our Seminarians. These qualified individuals— Benedictine, diocesan, and lay members—are very dedicated to their vocations of serving the Church through preparing our seminarians for priestly ministry. The result of their work is reflected in the good and holy priests who carry the message of Jesus Christ to people throughout the world. On behalf of the Seminary’s Board of Regents, I thank you for your continued prayers and support of our mission. Blessed John Paul II: A Model for Priests

Dear Friends, Christ’s peace! Please accept my heartfelt prayers and best wishes from Saint Vincent Seminary. During the his visit to Austria in 1998, Pope John Paul II spoke about vocations to the priesthood, noting that “vocations are obtained from God, thanks to prayer.” He continued, “I invite you to ask, with fervor and constancy, for the reaping of new vocations to the priesthood and to consecrated life from the Master.” Blessed John Paul II’s life inspired many young men and women to explore the priesthood and religious life, including some young men who are presently attending Saint Vincent Seminary. Saint Vincent Seminary joins people of all faiths and goodwill throughout the world in giving thanks to God for the gift of Blessed John Paul II to the Universal Church and to all mankind. His efforts on behalf of peace and justice are still felt today. Here at Saint Vincent, where we are training future priests, we have many students who have arrived here after taking other career paths. We find in our formation program that it is an ongoing awareness of who they are as men that enables them to use the gifts the Lord has given them within the context of their vocations as future priests. Perhaps one sign of the success of a seminary program is how it continues to sustain its priest alumni throughout the course of their ministries. A 20-year study of our seminary graduates demonstrates a 94 percent retention rate. It is our prayer that the seminarians and alumni of Saint Vincent Seminary will find renewed commitment in their priestly vocation through the intercession of Blessed John

Paul II: A Model for Priests. As Rector, I join the entire Seminary community in extending our heartfelt gratitude to Cardinal Wuerl and to Mr. John C. Marous, Jr., for their outstanding work on behalf of Saint Vincent Seminary. Mr. Marous has served as both as Chairman of the Board of Regents and a member of the board for 20 years. His wisdom and leadership have enabled the Seminary to advance in every way. His commitment to strengthening the academic programs to enable our students to meet the demanding challenges of priestly ministry in the 21st century along with increased endowment and financial stability for the Seminary have enabled us to maintain a strong position among U.S. Seminaries in preparing leadership for the Church today. We are also grateful to Cardinal Wuerl who gave guidance and direction to the entire priestly formation program of Saint Vincent Seminary in his 24 years of service as a member of the Board. All of the foundations outlined in the Program for Priestly Formation (PPF)—human, spiritual, intellectual and pastoral—have been firmly established in our program through his guidance. The entire Seminary community looks forward to working with our new Chairman of the Board, Dr. James Maher. His experience in educational leadership and his years of service as a member of the Board of Regents will be a great blessing as the Seminary moves forward in the coming years. Saint Vincent Seminary’s website has undergone its third major redesign in eleven years. The new site went live in mid-April at http://www. saintvincentseminary.edu. “The redesign will allow us to update content more easily, in addition to providing fresh content on the home page on a regular basis,” said Director of Public Relations Kim Metzgar. “The new site places more of a focus on photos and videos, while retaining the news, program and course information that has been a staple of previous websites.” Deborah Acklin, a member of the Board of Regents; Father Justin Matro, O.S.B., Rector; and Paul Whiteside, Director of Development, have also been involved with the website update, with several meetings held at the Seminary and in Pittsburgh to chart the progress of the redesign. Metzgar noted that the Seminary now has its own

YouTube® Channel for videos, http://www.youtube.com/user/ SaintVincentSeminary, and more than 70 photo albums from past events. New features include video introductions by the full-time faculty members, a multimedia section linking directly to photos and videos, and a seminary almanac, which features a fact and photo of the day relating to Saint Vincent, the Seminary, and its alumni. A link to the Sunday homilies of Saint Vincent Archabbey is included in the almanac, as well as a link to a daily reflection written by a monk of the Archabbey. Each of the main categories of the website opens with either a slideshow or a video. A secondtier navigation system provides quick access to the content. “Thanks to the custom programming scripted by Brother

Isidore M. Minerd, O.S.B., a monk of Saint Vincent Archabbey and a seminarian, each time we upload a photo album or a video to one of those sites, it is automatically uploaded to the Seminary’s website,” Metzgar said. “We will now be able to spend more time creating content and less time working on the behind-the-scenes programming needed to make that content accessible to site users. The website is the work of the full public relations staff, including Brother Isidore; Liz Cousins, public relations associate; Brother Pio P. Adamonis, O.S.B.; Jordan Hainsey, a senior graphic design major at Saint Vincent College, who developed the new look for the website; and Sadie Stresky and Carly Marsh, student assistants. Hainsey did much of the design work for the site.

Additionally, the Archabbey Publications online store launched its new design in November. That store now has “departments” featuring many of Saint Vincent’s apostolates, including the Seminary. From that link, http://www.stvincentstore. com/seminary.html, Seminary supporters may register online for events such as Annual Scholarship Dinner; make an online tribute or memorial gift; contribute to a scholarship fund online; or register for special events, such as the annual retreat for priests, deacons and seminarians. The Seminary website upgrade has been in development since February of 2009. The Public Relations Office manages 15 websites for the Seminary, Archabbey and its apostolates. Many of those websites have already been redesigned using the new content management system. All have been migrated to a faster, more consolidated server.

Father Omer, P’41, C’46, S’49, a monk of the Archabbey, died on January 17, 2011. He retired in 1987 after teaching in the Seminary for 27 years. Father Omer attended Saint Bernard Parochial School and Hastings Public School in Hastings, and was a 1941 graduate of Saint Vincent Preparatory School. He received a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy from Saint Vincent College in 1946, and completed his ordination studies at Saint Vincent Seminary. His graduate studies were at the Catholic University of America, where he received a master of arts degree in American history in 1955; and, at the Teachers College of Columbia University, where in 1963 he was awarded a doctoral degree of education specializing in the teaching of speech. At Saint Vincent Seminary he was named an instructor in homiletics in 1960, assistant professor of homiletics in 1964, associate professor of homiletics in 1968, and professor of homiletics in 1981. In 1987, he was named professor emeritus of homiletics. In 1988 Father Omer received Saint Vincent Seminary’s Nova et Vetera Award for excellence in teaching. In 1994, Father Omer was honored with the Saint Vincent Seminary Alumni Award at the annual Alumni and Planned Giving Associates Banquet. Since 1991, a seminarian has received the “Omer U. Kline, O.S.B., Excellence in Preaching” Award. Father Omer served the monastic community, as well as the Scholasticate, Preparatory School, and the College in many capacities, He was the author of The Sportsman’s Hall Parish Later Named Saint Vincent, 1790–1846, and of The Saint Vincent Archabbey Gristmill and Brewery, 1854-2000. He is survived by his sisters, Mrs. Mary Louise Parrish of Nicktown, and Mrs. Donald (Hilda) Dumm of Ebensburg.

y r a tes in No m & e S ews N “Director of worship is ‘partner in the mission’” was the headline of a feature article appearing in a recent Pittsburgh Catholic edition on Father Jim Gretz, S’94. The article, by Associate Editor Chuck Moody, detailed how the love for liturgy of Father Gretz drives his diocesan work. He serves as director of the diocesan Department for Worship and diocesan master of ceremonies.

“We are responsible for planning and overseeing all the major liturgical events of the diocese,” he said. “Under the department is the Office for Music headed by Father Jim Chepponis. These two offices work together to make these events happen. Most of what we do takes place at the (Saint Paul) cathedral, some events are here at the (Saint Paul) seminary and a few events take place in the parish. “Our big cathedral events include ordinations of deacons, priests and, if need be, bishops. The chrism Mass on Holy Thursday morning, when the sacred chrism is consecrated and the oil of catechumens and the oil

of the infirm are blessed for all the parishes of the diocese. We assist in the ‘color’ Masses: Red Mass for the start of the judicial year; White Mass for those in the medical profession; Blue Mass for the police and firefighters. The Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass is overseen by the department. “Perhaps the biggest events are the two celebrations of the Rite of Election each Lent, for those who are being prepared for baptism at the Easter Vigil, as well as those who are being received into the Catholic Church or are completing their sacraments of initiation, namely confirmation and Eucharist. We are also responsible for the diocesan confirmation. The events surrounding the death of (retired Aux.) Bishop (John) McDowell were planned and overseen by the department. Most times when Bishop (David) Zubik is presiding at the cathedral, we are involved.” Father Gretz works closely with the episcopal master of ceremonies to plan events, as well as the sacristan at the cathedral. His office also produces the worship aids for events. “When I first spoke to the bishop about possibly taking this position, I wanted to still be involved in parish ministry,” he said. “My thought was that if I were simply in an office, telling people what to do, there isn’t much credibility to my work. However, if I am out ‘in the trenches,’ it gives me a chance to see the liturgical life lived in the diocese and see what I can do to help improve it. The bishop agreed it would give a ‘face’ to the office so that people would know who the director of the Department for Worship is. I have helped cover a number of Masses since I’ve taken office.” Father Gretz told writer Moody his love for liturgy began at his home parish as an altar server and choir member, and it continued while he was in the seminary. “I am well aware that the

bishop is the official chief liturgist of the diocese and am sometimes awed by his trust in me to assist him in that role,” he said. “I do like what I am doing. Those who know me well say that this ministry is one suited for me. I have the gifts and talents necessary to be successful in this ministry.” Father Gretz was ordained in 1994. He served in four parishes as a parochial vicar: Saint Bonaventure in Glenshaw, Nativity in South Park Township, Saint Anne in Castle Shannon and Saint Vitus in New Castle. Father Gretz also served as a pastor at Holy Family in New Brighton and Saint John Neumann in Franklin Park. A sidebar to the feature article also noted that Father Gretz has recorded three CDs, all used in some manner as fund raisers at the parishes where he served. He told writer Moody that when he was at Saint Vincent Semiary he took a semester of voice. “I do enjoy singing.... As a priest, I believe in what the USCCB document ‘Sing to the Lord’ speaks of as ‘progressive solemnity.’ The basic premise is that all liturgies are not equal, so we do speak liturgically of solemnities, feasts, memorials, optional memorials and commemorations, as well as the Ordinary Time of the liturgical calendar. So, I have always sung the eucharistic prayer and been more musical for the solemnities in the life of the church.”

The seminary has welcomed two new students this spring: Deyre Bation Azcuna of the Philippines is a priesthood student from the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston. The son of Rhesa B. Azcuna and the late Tranquilino R. Azcuna, he is a 1992 graduate of Mount Carmel High School. He earned a degree in philosophy from San Carlos Seminary College, Cebu City, the Philippines, in 1999 and a degree in Sacred Theology from 28

the University of Santo Tomas in 2003. Yi Liang Huang of Sichun, China, is a 2000 graduate of Yun Xi High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Si Chuan Catholic Seminary, China.

Rev. Maurus B. Mount, O.S.B., S’06, of Saint Vincent Archabbey, recently obtained a master of arts degree in Classical Languages from the University of Illinois, Champaign. He is currently in the doctoral program there.

Kristina Antolin Davies has joined the Seminary staff as an English tutor. Ms. Davies and her husband, Dr. Antony Davies, reside in Greensburg. They are the parents of six children.

Dr. Scott Hahn, the Pope Benedict XVI Chair of Biblical Theology and Liturgical Proclamation since 2005, gave the annual lecture of the chair this fall. This year he spoke on “Many are Called: Rediscovering the Glory of the Priesthood.” The lecture drew from his latest book, of the same title, published in 2010 by Doubleday Religion Books. Following the lecture, Dr. Hahn was available to meet attendees and to autograph books.

Rev. Gerald Dennis Gill, director of the Office for Worship of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, presented an all-day session on the revised English translation of the third edition of the Roman Missal as part of the Seminary’s Pastoral Formation Program. All seminarians and many faculty members attended. His topics included “What is the Sacred Liturgy? The context for Welcoming the new Roman Missal; The Story of the Revised Translation: Same mass—New Words—Deeper Meaning; and A Glance at the New Texts: Clarifying and Amplifying What We Believe.” 29

In the Diocese of Charleston, Bishop Robert E. Guglielmone has appointed Father Gregory B. Wilson, S’00, as rector of the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Charleston, while continuing as administrator in charge of Saint Mary of the Annunciation in Charleston.

Rev. Mark Van Alstine, S’05, of the Diocese of Savannah celebrated Mass with the Savannah Benedictine Oblate Community in November. He is the parochial vicar of the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, Savannah.

Deacon Michael Marcelli, S’10, of the Diocese of Youngstown has been assigned to Saint Thomas Aquinas High School for the 2010-2011 school year. He will be ordained to the priesthood this spring. He is assisting with the retreat program and providing religious instruction, as well as other duties.

Also in the diocese, Father John-Michael Lavelle, S’99, conducted a three-week program on “The Sacraments in the Light of Resurrection” at Saint Louis School Hall, Louisville. The seven sacraments were studied and divided into the areas of initiation healing and vocation through the prism of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Ondeck, C’02, S’07, was named associate pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish, Clarksburg, with residence at the parish rectory, effective December 18, 2010. Rev. Fred C. Byrne, O.S.B., S’82, has been appointed administrator of Saint John University Parish, Morgantown, through June 2011. Rev. Richard J. Ulam, O.S.B., S’80, and Rev. John A. Rice, S’02, have been appointed chaplains for the Catholic Daughters of the Americas courts in West Virginia. He continues as advocate, auditor and canonical consultant in the Diocesan Tribunal. Rev. Donald W. Cramer, C’05, S’00, has been named administrator of Saint Monica Parish, Sunbury.

Father O’Malley Inducted Into Hall of Fame Father Jack O’Malley, S’65, a Pittsburgh native and Central Catholic graduate, joined 11 other individuals and two teams as they were enshrined into the Saint Francis University Athletics Hall of Fame on February 5. The Hall of Fame was established in 1996. Father O’Malley preceded his priesthood by leading the Red Flash to a 52-22 record in three seasons as a standout point guard, including back-to-back 20-5 seasons. He lettered from

1956-1959 and was a member of the Saint Francis National Invitation Tournament (NIT) team that faced Fordham at Madison Square Garden. Father O’Malley led the Red Flash in assists all three seasons and finished with 791 points (11.0 points per game) and 422 rebounds (5.9 rebounds per game) in three seasons. He was well-known as a clutch player and served as the team captain during the 1958-1959 season Father O’Malley helped 30

Saint Francis win the Carousel Tournament in 1958, and earlier in the season hit a pair of free throws with no time remaining to help the Red Flash defeat in-state rival Duquesne, 65-64. It was a win that helped Saint Francis get into the NIT Tournament. Father O’Malley is a member of the Saint Vincent Seminary Class of 1965. He credits his Scripture professor, Father Demetrius Dumm, O.S.B., for his love of Scripture.

Bishop Donald W. Trautman of the Diocese of Erie will receive an honorary doctorate and serve as the speaker for Saint Vincent Seminary’s 2011 commencement, scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday, May 6. Bishop Trautman has had a wide range of pastoral, educational and administrative experience: parish priest, seminary Professor of Scriptural Doctrine, Chancellor, Vicar General, Pastor, Auxiliary Bishop and Diocesan Bishop. He has shepherded God’s people for 25 years as a Bishop, with 20 of those years as the Diocesan Bishop of Erie, Pennsylvania. He has served two elected terms (six years) as the Chairman of the U.S. Bishops’ Committee on Liturgy. He has played a prominent role in translation issues relative to the Lectionary and New Roman Missal. He is the former Chairman of the Bishops’ Committee on Doctrine. He studied for the priesthood in Innsbruck, Austria, where he received his licentiate in sacred theology. He was a student of Karl Rahner and noted liturgist Josef Jungmann. Bishop Trautman pursued higher studies in biblical languages at Catholic University in Washington, DC, and continued his post-graduate work at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome where he received his licentiate degree in Scripture. He also earned a doctorate in sacred theology from Saint Thomas Aquinas University, Rome. Prior to his ordination as Bishop, he taught in the seminary as professor of Scripture and doctrine, and served as Chancellor,

Vicar General, Auxiliary Bishop and Pastor in his home diocese of Buffalo, New York. In 1997, the University of Notre Dame’s Center of Pastoral Liturgy named Bishop Trautman a recipient of the Michael Mathis Award, its highest honor bestowed for outstanding contributions to liturgy, and in 2003 the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions’ annual Msgr. Frederick R. McManus Award was presented to him. He is the recipient of several honorary doctorates. Saint John’s University in New York presented him with its Gold Medal, the university’s highest recognition. Bishop Trautman has written extensively on liturgy and Scripture, with numerous articles appearing in America and Worship. He currently serves as episcopal moderator of the Diocesan Fiscal Management Conference and as chairman of the board of trustees of Gannon University in Erie. Bishop Trautman is also an active member of the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference and a member of the board of trustees of Saint Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore.
