BLUE HILL COMMUNITY SCHOOL SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2017

A Note from the Superintendent July 2017 Dear Parents and Families, The first day of school – Monday, August 14, 2017 feels like it is approaching like a rocket. This year will be an exciting year, filled with lots of new learning and growth opportunities. I know there is still a lot of summer left, but I cannot help but be excited about another new school year. I want to highlight some changes that will take place for the new school year. Blue Hill Schools has a new Transportation Company to provide the district’s busing service. The new company is Holiday Express located in Grand Island. If you have been a part of the bus routes in the past you will be contacted closer to the start of school about your route driver and pickup times. If you have a kindergartener or a new student that will be starting this fall and you want them to ride the bus, then please call the elementary school to put you on the list (402-756-2085). Holiday Express is looking for a route driver as well as substitutes and activity drivers. If you, or someone you know, might be interested please call or email Mick Brown of Holiday Express Busing 1-800652-1950 [email protected] Over the last few years Blue Hill Schools has made a concerted effort to let you and the rest of the public know what great things are happening in our school. We have used various social media to get the message out. We now are beginning a partnership with a company called Apptegy to make our school communication easier. A part of this effort is a new school website that is formatted to be completely compatible and viewable on smartphones. You can download the app from your favorite app store (available for iOS and Android) Simply search “Blue Hill Schools”. You also may want to make sure the School has your correct cell phone number and email address.

In August all students in grades 7-12 will receive a brand new Chromebook to use while at school and while at home. It will become theirs to care for and use for the rest of the time that they are in school in Blue Hill. We are calling this our Grades 7-12 1:1 Chromebook Program. This 1:1 program will allow students and teachers the ability to communicate and collaborate from any place at any time. Watch for the dates and times of mandatory parents’ informational meetings in August to provide answers and to introduce the program. Finally, before the start of school I also want to welcome our new staff members to Blue Hill Community Schools! The new Teachers for 2017-2018 school year are Leighann Campbell Instrumental Music, Maria Van Kirk K-6 Resource and Ryan Tegtmeier 5th-6th Grade Science and Social Studies. I hope everyone is getting excited about the start of the new school year and the first day of school. I will see you then! Joél Ruybalid, Superintendent

Breakfast is served every morning from 7:30 – 7:50AM. The cost for a complete breakfast is $2.10; this cost is for all students. Only one check needs to be written per family, although each child has their own account. Make the check payable to: Blue Hill Public School. When sending payment, please indicate your child’s name and the amount to go to each child in the memo section. The U.S. Agriculture Department is requiring all school districts to adopt policies to address lunch and breakfast meal debts. Below is the policy for Blue Hill Community Schools. We are asking that all parents cooperate by keeping lunch accounts paid. Blue Hill Community Schools has no desire to deny any students the opportunity to be served a lunch. Procedure for Students with Negative Account Balances School rules require all lunches to be paid in advance. Families are expected to provide a lunch from home or provide their child with cash or money deposited in their child's meal account to purchase school meals. PowerSchool will keep track of your school lunch balance(s) and parents will be notified when additional funds are needed (via letter and the school calling system). As a reminder, account balances may be viewed anytime by logging into PowerSchool (via website or app). When a student's account has reached a negative balance the cafeteria cashier will give a verbal reminder to the child to inform their parents of the negative balance. All students with negative balances will be served a regular school lunch serving. If at any point a student is 10 lunches behind in payment, the superintendent will send a letter to the parent(s) and arrange a meeting to discuss the negative lunch account. Once a student lunch account has become negative at the threshold listed above (10 lunches), this student will not be allowed to purchase second servings of the entree or to purchase a la carte items. Parents have the responsibility to work with the Superintendent to make sure the plan that is created is followed. Not following the plan could result in having to set up a credit card direct charge, be required to pay additional fees and/or have the matter turned over to a collection agency.
