BOARD BRIEFS The September 6, 2016, regular meeting of the Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees was called to order by Board President Beneta Burt.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by JaNorris Harmon, a senior at Provine High School. JaNorris is a true scholar-athlete. He runs track and plays football for at Provine. He is also a member of the National Junior Honor Society. One of his career goals is to become a civil engineer. He is the son of Vatrice Harmon who was present along with his younger brother. Provine High School Principal, Laketia Marshall Thomas, was also present.

The Prayer of Invocation was given by Rev. Wendell H. Paris Sr., director of membership care and visitation with the New Hope Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi. He also coordinates community garden development in Jackson. Rev. Paris holds a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural science from Tuskegee Institute. In 1990, Rev. Paris moved to Jackson to work with the Christian Children’s Fund, to assist child care providers in addressing needs of indigent children and families in Alabama and Mississippi. He and his wife, Joyce, have two children, Laurin and Tarsha. Rev. Paris’ favorite scripture is Micah 6:8: He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

MISSION

The Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees approved the administration’s request to accept the following donations:  Bailey APAC – Supplies (Kleenex, Clorox wipes, sanitizer, storage bags and paper towels) valued at $46 from Karen Munson-Gray of Jackson, MS. One HP 15 Notebook PC valued at $210 for the economic classes from Linda Johnson of Jackson, MS.  Provine High School – One HP Officejet 4630 all-in-one printer valued at $60 from Antoinette Davis of Jackson. One HP Desk Jet 2540 printer valued at $80 from Carol J. McWilliams (EEF Funds). One HP Officejet Pro 8610 valued at $300 from Debra G. Bracey (EEF Funds).  Provine Choral Music – One Legato Williams Keyboard and onePeavey Keyboard app, total valued at $398.00 for the choir from Landros S. Jones of Canton, MS.  Lake Elementary School – School supplies valued $1,225.36 and a monetary donation of $250 to purchase supplies for student incentives from Bank of America/Merrill Lynch of Ridgeland, MS.  Middle School Division – 12 gift cards valued at $240 to be used for adult and scholar recognition from Jeff Good and Mangia Bene, Inc.  Watkins Elementary School – One 6000 BTU air conditioner valued at $129.59 from Johnnie Griffith to be used by the third grade classroom of Mrs. Pollard.  French Elementary School – School uniforms valued at $116 from Karen Munson-Gray of Jackson, MS.  Key, Lester, Marshall, Sykes and Wilkins Elementary Schools – 600 backpacks with school supplies valued at $16,000 from the Junior League of Jackson. These donations will allow the District to continue its goal to improve parental and community involvement and to improve academic achievement for all students.
