Since February 2011, Brazil holds the command of the UNIFIL Maritime Task Force, deployed to support the Lebanese Navy in monitoring its territorial waters, securing the Lebanese coastline and preventing the unauthorized entry of arms or related material by sea into Lebanon. On September 4th, Brazilian corvette Barroso, current UNIFIL flagship, rescued 220 immigrants while sailing through the Mediterranean bound for Beirut to take its mission. Sailor’s Day in Brazil is celebrated on the birthdate of Joaquim Marques Lisboa (December 13th, 1807 — March 20th, 1897), known as Marquis of Tamandaré, the Brazilian Navy patron. His long military career expanded from the Brazilian War of Independence (1822–2184) to the Paraguayan War (1864–1870).
