Fireside Chat: Challenges and Opportunities for Hong Kong under the Competition Ordinance

Breakfast | Wed 7 June Competition law is now firmly on the minds of many in Hong Kong, particularly with the Commission's milestone first case before the Competition Tribunal and the release of the agency's long-awaited findings on the local auto-fuel market. Please join us for this breakfast to hear from two Australians, both of whom were previously at the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission: Rose Webb, current CEO of the agency responsible for enforcing the Competition Ordinance and Wendy Thian (also formerly with the Hong Kong Commission), who now leads the Competition practice at Deacons, Hong Kong's oldest and largest independent law firm. The informal discussion will cover the business implications of the Commission's recent law enforcement and advocacy efforts as well as global enforcement trends, from both the agency and corporate perspectives. About speakers:

Rose Webb, Chief Executive Officer, Competition Commission Ms. Rose Webb was appointed to the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Competition Commission (Commission) in March 2016. She previously held the position of Senior Executive Director at the Commission from April 2014. Ms. Webb has been closely involved in the formation and development of the Commission and in all aspects of its operations since the commencement of the Competition Ordinance on 14 December 2015. She has represented the Commission in Hong Kong and at international meetings. Immediately prior to her appointment to the Commission, Ms. Webb was Executive General Manager, Mergers and Adjudication at the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

Wendy Thian, Head of Competition, Deacons Wendy leads Deacons' Competition practice. She has extensive experience in both private practice and competition enforcement in Hong Kong, Australia and in the region across a broad range of sectors, including air transport, TMT, supermarkets, fuel, construction, retail and financial services industries. Wendy has assisted clients under investigation as well as complainants seeking to challenge commercial practices on competition law grounds. She has also extensively advised on the competition law risks and ongoing compliance issues arising from complex mergers, joint ventures and other commercial arrangements and practices, successfully securing merger clearances and authorisations/exemptions for cartels and other horizontal and vertical arrangements. Prior to joining Deacons, Wendy was part of the team which established the Hong Kong Competition Commission. She has practiced as a competition lawyer in Australia and Hong Kong and is also a former senior investigator at the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
